I'm not whining at all. When exacty did you become pro-nonviolence? You used to advocate military action against several countries IIRC.
I'm an interventionist. Being an environmentalist means that you have to intervene. You can't just let people pollute and do whatever they want. Likewise, if there are threats to loss of life there must be intervention. You're the type that would sit back and allow the Holocaust to happen. I'm the type that won't.

Canadaland. I mostly agree with social democratic principles, but when it comes to how certain things might be implemented, there is plenty of room for disagreement.
I have respect to left-wing politics in theory, for example as principle I consider redistribution of wealth good, but I have problem that I know how people should exploit it. And instead of expensive methods how control it, I find most fair and effective minimalize it.
Do you know numbers of czech gypsies who are coming to your country because your social system? How many of them you are able feed on?

No one opposes entrepreneurs or inventors. However, suppose an inventor figures out a way to deliver electricity to a city: I think that a rightie thinks he should have to convince a company whereas a leftie thinks he needs to convince a bureaucrat. Mainly because who's already providing the electricity.

Sounds like a pretty specific example. I'm sure it's not so simple that we can say all righties want the utilities to be privatised anyway.

They are not or do not contribute to externalities?

Never met a Gypsie, so there must be very few of them here. It's bad PR no matter how you look at it (if true), and unfortunate that there would be false claimants for refugee status from a developed country (is it?) with the sole purpose of freeloading..

I assume most are promptly shipped back to sender.

I am a Socialist, so I'm quite obviously "Left." I'm also Libertarian (in the true sense of the word, meaning ant-authoritarian, not the moronic usage that Rand fetishists and so-called anarcho-capitalists call themselves). I draw my influences from a variety of sources: Chomsky, Rousseau, Trotsky, Marx, and Jesus, among many others. Since this is a summary I won't go into details unless asked, but I think many people here are familiar with my ideas.

This is a very Ann Coulter view of the world. "You're either a conservative or a liberal, and nothing else."

There are oppressed, oppressors, and acquiescent compilers. Nothing else.

Your poll options are bad, so I can't vote. And I'm neither left nor right, since those are meaningless. I'm not a centrist either. Just independent and unlabeled.

You're quite a strong advocate of capitalism. That makes you Politically Right.

There, I did it for you.

You're the type that would sit back and allow the Holocaust to happen. I'm the type that won't.

Who said that?

I've voted on parties a bit to the left and a bit to the right of the centre, depending on which representatives appear to be the least incompetent at that time.

What do you do when both centre-right and centre-left parties are equally incompetent? :cringe:

Then I will make a strategic vote: vote on that party that is more likely to form an acceptable coalition.

This is something the amicans and brits won't understand, but no single party here has ever had or will ever have a majority, so leading parties will always need to look for partners to form a government with.

Not only may you end up with the party you voted on, but you may also get their disgusting friends.

From an American perspective, I'm a leftist, but in Finland I'm more rightist (our mainstream right wing is probably more left than Democrats in America). Liberal-conservative distinction is more important to me personally, and I'm definitely liberal.

am I? I thought I was a warmongering communist who supports Hezbollah and DPRK, neither of which are exactly non interventionist. what makes you say I would sit back and allow the holocaust to happen?

Actually could any poster at all explain to me what that remark was supposed to mean?

[*] none of the above :ack:

I think society's goal should be to make the best possible standard of living available to the least fortunate, and inequalities in opportunities should only exist if they serve to improve that minimum standard of living. Where would that put me?

I am a leftist and THIS HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE. No more duplicates, please :(

EDIT: Grouping me, Bast, Cheezy, and RRW in the same group is pretty arbitrary

Anyway, on topic, the words left and right are only useful for comparison to some reference point. I'm probably center-left in the Netherlands, so that's pretty left in the USA.

So you picked a public utility which is a natural monopoly as an example:rolleyes:. Please. inventors need to convince venture funds and bankers to get going, no one is trying to change that.

Smoking bans?
Transfat bans?

Controlling personal behavior to fit your personal morality is neither left/nor right but stupid. In anycase there is hardly a major leftest drive to ban transfat, which I would not support. Smoking in public places is an infringement on the rights of others. Banning private smoking is a rightwing position.

pot bans?
abortion bans?
porn bans?

Well, people who don't believe that IP should be protected, first.

That would be some teenagers not any political party.

I'm including things like the State being allowed to apply the death penalty. Not that it should be used, but that it may be used

Not what you said but OK that is a legit left-right difference.

You set up a list that said basically I am right wing because I don't believe in beating my wife or torturing puppies. The assumption being that the left favors those things. It is either an oversight due to ingrained short-hand talking points or a manipulative tactic. In either case it is annoying.

I'm a slightly-leftist Brazilian Integralist, except I don't share the religious focus and I believe in democracy being recreated to work better.
