[R&F] Rise and Fall General Discussion Thread

Don't forget Sukritact's excellent civs and UI mods; they all exceed Firaxis standards!

They certainly do look terrific, but I haven't played with them.

I hope that soon after R&F is released that they supply the modding
tools they promised. Maybe it wouldn't have been prudent to release
them earlier if huge changes were to be made. After R&F that excuse
(which I've assumed!) wouldn't be very convincing.

Is it me or does the new First Look box look like those Toronto subway station name signs:

I can see it.
Do you think future archaeologists will find the Queen's Park sign and
immediately conclude that Canada was a matriarchy?

No.

Future archaeologists could easily make an argument that Canada was a patriarchy as well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_station

Also, as long as I'm negative, I don't like the look of the new First Look logo...
What are your thoughts on the new First Look box's resemblance to the Toronto subway station name signs, @Siptah ?

I’m thinking the “turtles” are shellfish. They don’t appear to be moving & sea turtles are quite fast.

I was thinking something similar. I was imaging it was murex or something that a possible Phoenician empire could exploit better than other empires. But then I looked at the original "turtle" image again above that entertainment pier from one of the first screen shots, and it totally has a perfect turtle shadow below it.

Did anyone mention the Red Forest (surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant) could not actually be the natural wonder in the screenshots, because it's neither natural nor a wonder? I mean, it is a consequence of a man-made disaster..

I don't know if anyone already brought up this reasoning, if so I'm sorry for double posting. I posted it a while back in the Rise & Fall features thread, but it got deleted because it was the wrong forum to bring it up. I tried searching for it in this and other threads but I couldn't find anything.

They use the fonts of that and combine it with German town signs. How unoriginal.

I don't think that many people believe it is the Red Forest natural wonder you are talking about. I think red forest is just used to refer to it, since it is a red forest that we see.

Ah okay. I understood it that way since Bite writes it with capital letters, but I now see he does that for everything.

Very well, since Seondeok is revealed, and since the Firaxis logo is supposed to be on every leader, did anyone find the Firaxis spiral on her?

I didn't, but I found some spirals on Alexander's armour.

Is there any overview of where the logo is on each leader?

My issue with turtles as a luxury resource is that it’s far too abundant in the Korea video. Seems the shoal would be more of a bonus resource if anything, based on sheer quantity.

I'm going to ask later if there is a new terrain type called reef or something.

I know you're not going to see it, but this kind of attitude is exactly why big corporations get away with so much crap in gaming. Why do you feel the need to defend 2k games? It's not Firaxis that's raking in the money from your purchase. The devs get paid a salary, they don't own the franchise. Your money goes to 2k.

And who do you think makes money from sales on Mac? Aspyr? I highly doubt Firaxis sold them the rights to Civ and now they are doing whatever the hell they want with it. Unless someone has evidence that suggests otherwise, assume that Aspyr is being paid by Firaxis to do a port because Firaxis/2k thinks it will be cheaper than doing it in-house. If a port is low quality, or late, that is always because money was saved somewhere along the line.

You won't ever see me defending 2K games. I think their communication policy is absolutely idiotic, apologies for the language. But the porting is also not 2K's responsibility. It's Aspyr's responsibility. The only way in which you can hold 2K or Firaxis responsible is by saying they should've asked someone else to port the game, they are not in any other way responsible. So don't withhold your money from 2K/Firaxis because of porting issues. I could see "they don't allow Firaxis to communicate" as a reason to withhold money from 2K, but that's something totally different.

So you're saying the starting bug introduced with the fall patch is not a thing?

I wasn't referring to that bug in any way. Neither were you, actually, in your post. You're mentioning a carpet of doom, which, as far as I am aware, is in no way related to the starting position bug. But to expand on your points from your previous post, I have never come across a continent blocked by the units from two city states to such a degree that Settlers would even be significantly slowed down - let alone blocked.

As for resource distribution, that's exactly the point. Resources are scarce, and you might have to fight in order to get access to them. That's why they're called "strategic resources". So if there's only a niter resource at the other side of the continent, all that happened is that Firaxis' goal of instignating conflict through strategic resources has just been accomplished. If you don't like it, sure, but it's a fully intentional part of the game, so don't ***** about it.

I also do not recognize the "having to trade relics in exchange for strategic resources". 8-10 gold per turn is all they typically ask me. Of course, if you don't make enough gold for that, they'll come with other stuff, but then you probably just need to build an additional Commercial Hub + trader. Don't be surprised you can't trade with other civilizations if your economy is bad, after all.

The only thing which is indeed questionable is not requiring resources for unique units, but once again I understand Firaxis' design decision that it absolutely sucks if you can't build your unique unit if you don't have access to a resource.

(oh, regarding the starting position bug, I realize this isn't what you want to hear, but there's plenty of mods that fix it; just use them as band-aid)

I don't think that's entirely true when we are talking about cross-platform play as the major stumbling block (Aspyr has multiplayer working between Mac and Mac and Mac and Linux fine). The PC - Mac xplay is more complicated and requires work on both sides.

Ideally, knowing they were doing xplatform eventually, Firaxis would've taken that account in the technical design for multiplayer (and they likely did to some degree but it's much more complicated than expected due to unforeseen issues). Ideally of course, Apple would also have been providing decent graphic cards and good API for them, but what can you do.

Anyways, as a Mac user who pre-ordered the DDE and had to resort to boot camp just to play his friends: I already pre-ordered the expansion. I've gotten enough enjoyment out of the game (350+ hours) that I have no regrets on my purchase, despite definitely wishing some aspects were better.

(Full disclosure: pre-order was mostly as I already had the majority of it in steam credits from a return. In a basic, economic, why let them gain interest on your money when you could be sense, pre-order especially this far ahead doesn't make a lot of sense).

I simply preordered it because I figured there was no way in which I wasn't going to buy it on release...

Same here, plus I only play with modded maps that don't have the
starting bug, or any game-breaking flaws.
