Role Play Challenge: Tokugawa the Isolationist

In my shadow game, I ended up switching to Free Market even with no open borders as I found the combo of +1 Trade Route and 25% discount on Corps better than Merc. I have found both Minning and Sushi.

Also In my shadow game Greece also has one three religion city Athens and two more holy cities and I am just now attacking and raising his land.

My shadow game seems to be following the same pattern as yours.

I was fortunate to find the land south much earlier than you did which I think helped a ton in my game.

The only "Quest" I have gotten so far is Hostile Takeover which is asking me to gather Rice which would cause me to have a Japanese city on the same land as barabarians so I must decline that quest or cleanse the land... If I did not have to go for Space Race I would probably do it.

Hi Mad...I've just done a mad afternoons play to catch up to your point at 1432, to compare it, well I went to 1436..but no biggie..

Different world.........How so you ask..??
Spoiler :
Yeah yeah put it in a spoiler
Spoiler :
 I actually have a tech lead on the AI's... and I don't believe it myself...

Get this Taoism was founded in 160 AD...OMFG...!!!!!!! BUT....the Ankor wat wasn't built till, get this, 1140 AD  OMFG?? WHAT THE ????

I think, still haven't checked, that Pacal Bulbed Philosophy, and was then declared upon by Nappy..who's proceeded to take all cities but 1...Vassalised the little twerp....So much for building wonders hey??

I actually WON THE LIBERIALISM RACEFirst to Education, self teched Phil...then mad rush at Liberalism...Once Percilies Teched Ed...as well as Constitution...before..damm I knew I was in a head long rush..

Started trading Education around for all I could get...helped a bit with reducing time...big one was gaining Banking and Printing Press...allowing me to take Replaceable parts as the Lib free tech, proberly 2-3 turns ahead of Perciles...

So at moment I'm holding Replaceable parts on them all...as well as Lib on all apart from Fredrick and Perciles..they have Astronomy, but no open boarders why??

From Begining, I built the Great Lighthouse and Colossus for the Great merchant points...first 3 were G Merchants, all settled..religions fell early...damm girl friend... Tao as I said at 160 ad, Conf 320 bc, Christianity 800 bc, Apoloc palace 500bc

teched Maths, but forgot about Hanging gardens, proberly couldn't have made it, but nice to try, Pyramids..fell before I could get around to building...Statue of Zeus, fell before I had Asthetics....but I got the Parthenon and Great Libairy..Teched metal casting, for Colossus.

Self teched trough to CoL's..switch to Caste straight away, teched to civil serivce, Beauracry switch, then teched paper.

That's the point I started to meet them...about 1100 ad or so...I had paper on all, and was able to make some decent back filling trades..

On hut popping, I used cultural boarders to pop all huts, and got 2 techs from them Monachy, and Calander...

Trading, I traded for Machinery, Printing press for Ed..(big one that), and a few other..horse back riding, Iron working...lol..I still didn't have Iron working... Hey I'm Isolated..who's going to attack..

Guilds then banking...opening up the Printing press trade..

Tech wise, Pacal has a monopoly on gunpowder...and he's a vassal...Little dweeb.. Nappy and Pacal have Astronomy on me.... Big deal Nappies taken the western Island...Or part of it...Ok he's welcome to it...I can't afford it anyway. Sully and Perc have Nationalism, Sully the Taj...Gave that one away 2...

I was able to "discover" the southern land mass, by Island hopping to the Triple fish, land mass (2 tiles...woo hoo), building a city (Moai Statues), and riding culture to the coast...settled 4 cities there...building the forbidden palace there as well as my national parks city in centre with overlap with coastal cities...5 city planed apart from national parks will be on Tundra ismuss above the ice, once I kill the barb city, ON THE ICE???. Settle upon the iron.

All in all, I feel like I'm doing well, Crashed my Economy settling the lands to the south with the islands, as well as some main land fillers...but now I'm coming back with Universities/Oxford. MOved capital to the Central part of the Island, along the river with 5 hills about it...Proberly be my Iron works city. Original capital, with 3 settled G Merchants, will have to be Wall Street now....No other choice..with national Epic.

Granted its not the best choice, but I did what I had to do....Oxford, I realised will need to go elsewhere, proberly new capital...or old??? dunno...might skip wall street...or put on southern island mass...national parks/wall street?? nah...Globe Theatre/wall Street?? National Epic/wall street??

What to do...I'm beeling Rifles..as I have woeful defence...archers mainly...few longbows...couple spears...:p , but I'm Please with nappy, and he's the only real candidate for attacking me...but he hates Frederick, Proberly hates Joao 2, who was rather late in meeting me....

Oh well, onwards I go....trying to catch you...or atleast stay alive.

I've just adopted Free religon/Mercantilism, are now in green at 40% Research..So here's hoping Nappy don't take a liking to my lands....*sigh*...He's going to attack don't you know it...

:p Nah Nah Nan Nah Nah..

I am not too troubled with spoilers in this game as I do not think it will matter much.

@IPEX, nice job nailing liberalism. I was pretty shocked it fell so early in my game, good job!

@ HALT, yes I was slow on scoping out the sourthen lands. I will have to be more careful checking isolated silands early in the future. Still, I do not see how we could settle all those lands early without completely trashing our economy.

@ NT, you may be right but I will follow the Japanese code of honor here unless completely pushed to the edge. I am still optimistic about the space race as I am certain Pericles is ramping the culture up. Do not be surprised to see Japanese tanks assaulting Greek lands very late.

So it seams like we still have a choice; take the agressive military tech path of Assembly Line/Industrialisation for tanks/marines and Aluminum : OR defensive faster path of artillery/rocketry for anti-tanks/SAMs and open up Apollo (we do have a pair of atronge production cities). To be honest it's been a very long time since I hunkered down with some AT/SAM units and may be interested in that, see how those highly promoted Japanese gunpoweder units hold out.

You need to attack Pericles.... No way around it. Pericles should have most of his attacking troops in Ottoman quarter, so it should be easy to raid the capital area and get out unharmed.... this means Ass line. toku marines are scary stuff, especially combined with a good Batteship defense smashering and some arty sacrifice. Raze Athens and all of Pericles coastal cities and , if Pericles don't bribe anyone to war you, you'll be safe for a reasonable time, enough to tech Flight and do some task force WW II stuff ( planes are cheap stuff and good city attackers , even with Sam online ). Worst case scenario ,resort to subs + guided missiles ,the ultimate eco crasher tool ....

I agree you need to raise the Greek cultural cities (at least one/two of them). I am not sure you need to destory all Greek costal cities you can play defensive as long as he is no longer a cultural threat.

He will get to a Cultural victory before you can win the space race.... So something has to be done.

@mad
NT, you may be right but I will follow the Japanese code of honor here unless completely pushed to the edge
Bushido rules only apply to bushido followers.... And Pericles is smashing a "friend" ( Suleiman )... no honor in letting a "friend" die....

And we really need bacon

My thinking on Pericles (and I have not made a final decision) is patience!!! Remember the Persians in Space game, we were concerned about Fred going into space after he turned up the science (EDIT: Meant Culture) slider but we still easily beat him. Pericles has a very low culture thir city and we have time. Right now we are three or four techs behind, AL/DR/Fascism and we just got electricity in a trade. He does not have Mil Trad/Mil Sci and is likely going after radio if anything, probably followed by Mas Media. I simply do not view him as a threat at the moment, at least once we get AL to match his infantry.

Is it me, or does anyone else see a problem with Pacal and Joao being ahead in tech?

Since happiness is an issue, I'd use the war for resource clause in the rules and take out Joao or Napolean or Pacal for their happiness resources. Raze the cities with out the resources and keep the ones with if you must. Unless you get more resources you will probably lose. (Edit: Now that I think about it this is a lot like what happened to Japan in WWII, they had to expand for the resources)

Why don't you beeline rocketry and just nuke the . .. .. .. . out of everybody and then leave that desert wasteland you inhabit now? :D

Because you need fission + Manhattan + Rocketry for nukes, maybe? And by that time ,someone will be pretty close of winning, either by culture or by space.....

Yea, you should not break the PRC rules under any condition .. you can't attack Greece unless they DOW on you; in that case, it's fair game to attack; just buckle down and go into space.. you can succeed given the AI's horrible production management when it comes to space parts

Since, your not too worried about spoilers...I'm at abojut 1800's..and I think I've messed up the game...

I had Rifling as a Monopoly Tech, and wanted to keep it that way for a while...big mistake. As I assumed, (made an Ass out of U and ME) that one would tech towards it, and then I'd trade it.

BUT NO!!!, They all Teched everythnig Else, and traded them about...Now I'm hopeless out teched...All the Happyness wonders have fallen, UN's been built, I had to trade Rifling to catch up on Infantry, which they all had, just no rifling...

So by ignoring the other paths of research, I"ve dug myself a hole.

Teching Medicine now...I have 2 great merchants, with most other AI's having medicine...Problerly will miss the Great Engineer wonders, as they seem to be popping them now 2...I need a Great Engineer..

Internet I'd say is Gone, and Percilies, is going for both cultural victory/ and possibly domination as he just declared on frederick...

My only realistic chance is to get marines, burn down Athens, Cornith, Both Coastal, and Sparta (Costal, but not cultural), Pray I can get internet and go space ward bound.

Trouble is the IDIOT Nappy, keeps declaring on me..with out dated troops, but now has Many destroyers and has pillaged all my fishing nets... So I'll have to hit a couple of cities or kill some destroyers to get him off my back.

Not looking good, the 'No resource trading' has been a killer, and Emancipation happyness is Hurting me too, Cultral slider is at 20 %

I flattened the 2 of the 3 Greek Cultral cities and destroy 3 other cities called a peace and went back to building, dropping the Greek's from a score of 3000 to 1800.:goodjob:

The Greek's built the UN... I won the ballot because of my pal Fredrick.

Fredrick declared on the Greeks, and I thought to myself end of that problem... But the Greeks took over most of German and Vassled him!

Now I am sending my War Fleet with Advanced Fighters and Gunships to finish the job, if I can before the next UN vote screws me with Open Borders.

Mad: Can I continue to play the game or should I consider my country polluted by McDonalds, Disney, and French Wine and quit the game?

Just "defy" the Open Borders resolution...it'll make your cities unhappy but you can still play.

Joao and Pacal, depends on what Tech's they are in front on...

You, and me for that matter, need to raise a few Greek cities...

Try Bribing Nappy into war with the ones' your worried about, even backwards Frederick...

In my world, I made a mistake moving my capital, now I have to move it back again...Sigh........

Oh, we've got Trade routes with all cities......No open boarders as yet, I guess I'll just have to vote no.......but what can you do.......if forced into it.......Defy resolution......they'll just keep popping it every 10 turns or so...

Space or Bust...Busted I think..but keep on teching

Halt, for teh fun of the RPC I would say you need to defy that resolution but if you simply said no and got stuck with open borders I think you can continue as long as you adopt Mercantilism and do not trade for resources.

Please continue the games, my own is a dismal failure which I shall post in a bit. We slugges along in tech but have been overwelmed by a massive Greek attack which has left us in a pretty much unwinable situation. SO I will have to say this RPC has failed (although we did keep our honor intact). Everyone may want me to maintain the Japanese honor and fight to the last man, I think I'll pass and prep the next RPC.

If any of you Shadowers win this game, and it sounds like some of you might, please continue and post the results. I would like to see at least one Nobel Japanese come oput on top here :goodjob:

I did not say yes...the resolution has not happened yet.

I do think I will win just Marathon is time consuming

Isolationist Tokugawa: The Bitter End

Well sorry folks, but this was certainly not my best RPC game. Limited good land/resoruces with an isolated start, strict no trading, and limited victory made this a difficult game. While we made it pretty far, Perciles was simply too advanced and too stronge. The game until I stopped

We teched Assembly line/Industrialization/Rocketry/refridgeration. Techpace was very slow as we were limited in happiness and health.

A few trade with Pacal and Napolean

TokuF0017.jpg

TokuF0018.jpg

We did discover an Aluminum resource, which gave us hope.

TokuF0019.jpg

But that idiot German declared war on Pericles and got completely smoked and soon capitulated. This started Pericles teching again (friggin moron). Of course Pericles has given all these nice techs to Suliman and Fred.

We changed civic out of desperation as we were limited in what we could do.

And soon after

TokuF0022.jpg

And sooner after

TokuF0023.jpg

I have seern enough. Pericles is looking for a domination win, he is probably building the UN, and looks to be heading to space also. Our navy was completely destroyed, seafood mercilessly pillaged.

A dismal loss:cry:

Rather than watch the Japanese nation be destroyed ever so slowly (as only an AI can do) he heads into the back and falls on the Samuri sword. Sorry, I will play out a game with a chance at victory, but it's impossible to get a space win here>

I will attach the save in cas eany brave soul wants to play it out, but I prefer to move onto the next RPC.

The unhappy recap will follow.
