Role Play Challenge: Tokugawa the Isolationist

That's what I've been thinking yesterday, that, you don't have high enough commerce nor production to launch compare to the AIs. The gap between you and the Best AIs on F9 screen was simply too large. So you must have some wars!

I thought Pericles was trying space yesterday, now that we know he is trying culture, things would be actually easier, wouldn't it, as his no.3 city is so far of legendary.

I council to use quantity to beat quality. Turn to fulltime war mode and just invade Freddy mainland using Rifles and cannons. Ignore those annoying Greek cities on your "mainland" as they don't gain you much. Only after getting Freddy you turn to Pericles. With their land, and after tying up some lose ends, like getting rid of Maya's city, etc.

Only after that, you have the ability to say 'f u' and leave them alone and go to space.

Gotta love Sparta-gotta burn Sparta!.. I also see uranium in its bfc...
Raze!! Burn!!
For honour! They have insulted us! They have threatend! BURN!!! :) :mischief:

EdiT* Does every AI get mad when you burn a holy city or only the civ that owns it? I just burnt down montys holycity and he only gave me a -2 for it no one else did. Does it have to do with them having that state religion? If so i cant imagine the world being that upset.

I think you got the Japanese mentality!!!

And I believe it has to do more with the state religion, but not sure. Come on, what's more imprtant a 4 religion Holy city or Pork for the Japanese nation?

Razing holy city gives -2 to all with same state religion and that 1 city is 4 religions holy city :P so you might suffer some disliking towards you after razing it.

My advice:

War on Pericles. Raze and destroy Athens and Sparta, and capture the cities that he has on your land. I'd also try a way to get that Mayan city on Japanese land!

Good luck.

I don't know why you want to mess with Sparta... it is far awy from the sea, and has mountains protecting it.... A raid to Athens and maybe Corint would kill Pericles way to culture and would require not much more than what you have now...

Of course if your objective is a little bigger than that... but remember what happened when RL Japan decided to take the biggest ocean shores in the world with a limited prod basis.

I agree, i think it would be enough only to raze the second highest culture city.
Even for Pericles it would take alot time to get another city so high ( and if he gets another city so high just do it again :P )

Raise Athens, as he only has 10 cities....

Raising athens and capturing one or 2 others on small Islands, will stop the 9 temples for the 3 cathedrals...

then you simply just get war declared upon him, or raise another city if it start getting too close to legendary.

remember, the AI, won't have a 4th city as a back up, so it will be starting again from Zero..or what ever low base it has.

Plus your denying the use of all those lovely wonders...for what ever benefit they held.

Now that Toku's lust for vengence has cooled a bit he can think rationally.

1) We need to secure Japanese lands, thus a small force to claim the western island city.
2) Pericles coastal cities need to be cripled, starting with taking and Razing Athens, followed by Thebes and the other city.
3) The desert island can be taken later.

But Pericles definitely needs to removed from the cultural path but also military. He is not far away from tanks. We do not want him to resurrect, perhaps hurt him enough so he capitulates to Suliman.

Maybe I'm a spoilsport, but I'd like it if you sticked with the rules, or at least their spirit ... so drive the Greeks from Japanese territory, but there's no need to attack their mainland. If Pericles wins through Culture, so be it - not that he's even close to, since this is Marathon and he needs 150,000 points per city, including Corinth, so you've got plenty of time. Winning isn't everything. ;)

Ah, but there is no restrictiones on wars or guidelines once Japanese lands have been tred upon. Toku can wage war as long as he wants, Pericles is the one who violated our lands.

Tokugawa the Isolationist: Part VI

Ughhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! What a plodding game. Being the isolationist leads to rather dull play I must say that. Still we got into two wars, repulsed the Greeks although we may have unleashed a beast. Still looking for advice on where to go next.

First of all we prepped a little bit and got a good random event.

TokuF0000.jpg

Nice, free combat to cannons.

WE soon get a request from Suliman.

TokuF0001.jpg

We take this request, time to del with teh trespassing Greeks.

We razed the city on the western landmass, took that desert island city, and sued for peace by offering 200 gold.

We popped a GM (luckily?) which we saved for Sushi. As you will see at the end, this caused a rather difficult choice.

TokuF0002.jpg

We made a few trades, trying to catch the Greek who is pretty much leveling our former Ottoman ally.

TokuF0003.jpg

TokuF0004.jpg

And after such a nice trade with Fred

TokuF0005.jpg

HE almost sneak attacked one of our cities (the eastern city on that western landmass) but we held and soon had peace.

Ah, the techpath

RR/Med/Corp/Comb

We used the GM fopr Sushi (OK, we now have the headquarters.

TokuF0006.jpg

But teh costs are high since we are running Merc, and costs for spreading it are extreme, leaving us at 30% science without enough profit to pay for more spreading. AT this point, the hell with Sushi

TokuF0007.jpg

We adopt SP, hurts a bit losing those free specialists but we are sort of in a poor situation here without open borders.

We saved here.

The world

And our cities

A last trade with Joao

TokuF0013.jpg

And the tech path

TokuF0014.jpg

OK, our situation

1) Seams to me that Pericles may be slowing his tech pace just a bit. Perhaps he has committed the slider which means we may be able to hit Athens later.

2) Speaking of which, I decided to follow the "spirit" of the Japanese Isolationist. We cleared Pericles off our land, can tolerate Pacal, founded Sushi (we just don't want to use it), and continue our path of indifference to the world.

3) Next techs either assembly line and industrialisation for aluminum and tanks OR artillery/rocketry which allows us cheaper anti-tanks and SAM for superior defenses.

4) Osaka is building the IW and will soon be a real production powerhouse once we start watermilling it up. That landlocked mainland city has the NP and alot of free specialists. Sasama has the HE and will be our military city with some help from Osaka/Kyoto. All cities will start producing naval units which we will replaced existing navy units with to conserve costs.

OK, what are the chances of the getting teh SS launched in time? Yeah, I agree not too great!

On the cost of Sushi...

The costs look high, but what about the benefits?

At the very least, the city can run 2 extra merchants (3 if it has the health), which covers the cost in any city with a courthouse... and adds science to boot! (Are you still in representation?) And this even ignores the bonus gold you get in the HQ city.

P.S. that's a lot of unhappy; the culture slider doesn't help profits?

There are several issues with Sushi. COsts are higher than normal because we would run Merc rather than Free Market (useless as we cannot open borders). Alot of those island cities do not have courthouses or markets/grocers thus alot would be runninghtose regular citizans. Sp gives us ALOT of extra cash (in cas ewe need to make war again) plus get's us that production bonus. One of the very few games where seams like no economic civic seams perfectly right in this situation.

Happiness is an issue because our whale resource became obsolete once we teched combustion and I have not adjusted that. We cannot trade for happiness resources and I prefer not to use the culture slider.

No open borders adds a real sticky situation. This RPC is rather difficult as we have several things against us, starting land, Isolated start, and closed borders.

OUCH!! Pericles is swallowing Suleiman.. a superpower in the making; should be fun if there is another war with Greece and there very well could be; if there isn't he'll just get to space before you do unless you beeline Internet (seems like the best strategy right now). Even if you stopped the war with Greece and got rid of his cities on your continent, can you redeclare if you fee you have not gotten enough revenge for his intrusion?!?

Your chances to launch in peace before AIs don't look good. I still say invade Freddy (this guy doesn't even have rifle & steel yet!) and use his land as a springboard to trim Greek back a bit.

I mean in real life, the Jap fought the Russian & Chinese, occupied Taiwan (early 1900s) without being provoted why....

Didn't Japan invade Russia and China for strategic resources in real life that set them on a path to war with the US? They were not provoked but the Japanese felt it was a matter of national security to acquire those resources and not be forced to rely on another nation for the supply.

We already have peae with Greece and I do not plan to break these RPC rules. I generally consider the Japanese Civilizations one of the honorable ones, so I am reluctant NOT to follow our rules. He is an isolationist and shall stay that way unless attacked.
