It's getting quite late for another city, but assuming we want one, we should first ask 'why'.

If it's for coastal access to Tourism cargo ships, then it doesn't even have to be a very good city, but rather than deal with increased tech costs, and all the other things, we can just therefore plonk one down anywhere later in the game when our Tourism is high enough, in my view.

If it's for cargo ships for trade, or to have a 4th city making science,then it should be a better city. The pink spot is not good enough at all for this. A better spot is on the sheep, working the Marble as a first citizen. Later we can GG bomb for the Whales. Run a Food caravan there and it will be bigger in no time, and it has decent production.

But I think we have higher priorities, overall, and there is nothing wrong with 3 city Tradition without coastal cities, esp. when its not a continents map.
 
Back to playing. We’ll stay with three cities for now.
Our ivory for citrus deal with Lizzy ran out.

Here is the way the chess board lies at the start of the war. I think I read somewhere that the AI does a poor job of conducting warfare. I have to say that this is a pretty good starting position for the Assyrians.

I will try to maximize damage to units that can capture a city.
 
Oh dear, well it was fun playing with you. Nothing against you personally Bugsy, but that's an undefendable position. I'm sure he'll have Sinai really quickly and to lose a city at this stage means we can't really win. There's no shame in resigning if we don't want to play out the misery.

Uh oh. So much for those caravans.

Work has kicked into an unexpectedly high gear here, so I've been less engaged that usual. Sorry about that. I may need a skip if we are still alive :)
 
Turn 106 – Barely make a dent in the long sword. Take out a horse. Red line the siege tower.

Change our builds to comp bows.

IBT – We lose the yellowed comp bow, but Ashy doesn’t do much of anything except move around. If I had that position and those units, Paris sur Sinai would be mine. The AI is not a good tactical player.

Turn 107 – Kill the siege tower and another horse. Bugsy’s civ education continues. I can see that I can find out a unit’s promotions in the attack window. As expected Ashy’s forces are battle hardened. Most have the cover promotion which is why our ranged units aren’t making a dent.
 
IBT – Lose an archer.
Turn 108 – Education is in. Select engineering next. Kill a spear. Yellow line a horse and a treb.

IBT – We lose another archer. Ashy’s behaviour is just bizarre. The Doge wants to do a research agreement. Sorry, I’m going to use that for an upgrade if I ever get a chance. Ramses enters the renaissance and we get a spy.

Turn 109 – A bunch of horses for gpt deals end with Pachacuti. Kill a horse and a warrior. Upgrade an archer. Sell the 3 horses back to Pachacuti for 2 gpt & 69g.

Put the new spy in Ashy's capitol.
 
IBT – Lose an archer.
Turn 110 – Paris sur Sinai took a hit from something. Maybe that redlined horse. Kill the horse. Redline another horse outside Paris sur Le Nil. Kill a comp bow and another horse. Get a great general.

I would say all is lost if it wasn’t for the bizarre tactics of the AI. I’ll post the save and let the team decide how we want to proceed.

Since it's still early, AI *might* accept white peace. It's kind of pointless though because he will come back to harass us soon after, so we further delay our proper path. I'd tech to workshops and get a pair of Pikes in between
 
What is our "proper path"? This is deity. I don't think there is some kind of formula that you have to follow to win.
 
CV is the only VC for which you can't mess around too much with the path, ST is right. If we don't get Sistine, LtoP, GT or Uffizi, it's gonna be one of those hellish endgames. Right now we're seriously behind, so if we survive (which I think is really unlikely, since if all those Trebs fire the city is gone), we wouldn't be able to afford any more setbacks.
 
Ok, so, what's the plan? What's next for techs, SPs, faith? Looking at the numbers, we will get neither (maybe a tech though) but it's worth keeping an eye ahead.

I get that, immediately, I'm defending against the barbarian invasion from across the Great Wall of Tables Turned. That will occupy all of my preoccupation, gold and production. But do I try to sneak in infrastructure? Do I make horses, pikes or catas?

Got it, will play tomorrow most likely.

I was think we wanted to get to machinery and crossbows, that's why I went for engineering. As for infrastructure, when you can do infrastructure :rolleyes: , we need to replace our caravans for cash flow.

Depending on what VC path we want to undertake from this point, a detour through accoustics (as next tech) would open up the rationalism tree in time for our next SP.
There are no specialists hired anywhere as of yet. We might want to get Writer's guild in the capital before a uni.
