Everyone knows that Japan doesn't trust anyone, no open borders, no trades, no nothing. However, most people don't realize that Tokugawa also pines for the days when he was Organized.

This SG will have two aims. The primary aim is to showcase the brand new BUG mod (yay us!) that can be found here. The second aim is to help Tokugawa regain his organized days. This will be done by strategic placement of cities. We will be placing our first 8 cities in a ring around our capital to minimize distance maintenance expenses (see here for distance maintenance expense explanation). I've marked them on the map already. Our second ring of cities (if we get that far), will be placed to also minimize expenses.

Another restriction that we will be using is based on Tokugawa not liking his neighbours. As such, we hate any civs near us. Civs a little bit away are ok. Civs on the other side of the planet are our friends. Any civ that causes its borders to touch ours is THE ENEMY. We must immediately declare war and raze cities until those offending borders don't touch our pure Japanese lands (Edit: Rule Change - we must immediately declare war if the civ's cities take away a tile in the BFC from one of our cities). In this vein, we cannot start our second ring of cities until there is clear room to plant a city and have it expand to its Big Fat Cross.

Roster:

1. alerum68
2. FeedBack
3. ·Imhotep·
4. EmperorFool
5. Ruff

First player plays 30 turns, next 5 20 turns and then 10 turns from then in (is that ok?)

Starting Position

Here is our starting position. To get the ball rolling on the 'what is different with BUG' ... you will notice that the starting flashing text had been changed from the normal 'hit enter' to 'Ctrl-Alt-O to modify the BUG options.

Looks like the first build is set to a worker... did you want to keep that, or let the city grow to size 2 first, then train a worker, and let it grow to 3, while we beeline for Bronze Working for a settler chop?

Oh yeah, I'm in!

Upload the save when you're ready and I'll take a look at our options.

If anyone has any questions about SG ettiquite go ahead and ask me or Ruff... we've both been in a SG or 30.:p

Here is the ettiquite guidelines that I like ... lifted from the DM crowd ...

Finally, we will be using DM SG etiquette, so please familiarize yourself before signing up:

Alpha: The quality of your report outweighs the quality of your play. We’re here to have fun, and, of course, winning is fun, but losing in style is preferable to a boring win. Remember, your report should be a new reply to alert other players.

Bravo: Reports should be detailed, with plenty of screen shots and player commentary, explanations, musings, etc; an auto-log dump will not suffice. Shots of the F9 screens and overview shots of the empire are nice too, once in a while.

Charlie: Punctuality rocks! “24/48” means post a "got it" within 24 hours of when the last save was posted, and play within 48 hours of that ‘got it.’ Waiting 47 hours to ask for a skip is lame. Punk out two times in a row, and you’ll be dropped from the roster. Skips and swaps are fine, but try to let us know sooner, rather than later.

Delta: Major game decisions (war/peace declarations, religion swaps, city placement, etc) should be arrived at via group consensus.
1. If the team disagrees with you, either argue your case better, or do it their way. Do NOT just blow them off and do it your way because it's your turn.
2. However, if there’s no consensus and you’re up, do it your way and explain why. Conversely, if someone else is up, don't whine when they do it their way.
3. Similarly, overruling techs or city builds is rude and should be done via consensus, barring an emergency.
4. In extraordinary situations, sometimes an opportunity presents itself that the group didn't foresee. If the consequences of it are great, players should stop, and refer the question to the group.

Echo: Being a better player does not give you the right to belittle anyone else or their play. Other people are going to disagree with you on major decisions; get used to the idea, and play nice. If not, take your ball and go home.

Foxtrot: Thread spam is good. Trash talking, poking fun, gentle ribbing, virtual noogies, and generally horsing around are all encouraged, but don’t be rude.

Golf: Automate sparingly.
1. Workers should almost never be automated, except perhaps late-game or building a trade network. However, if you have to, set your game options to “disallow automated worker forest chopping” and “keep previous improvements.”
2. Use of the “Emphasis” buttons is fine, but let the group know and explain your reasoning (specialization is a major game decision). If you prevent growth in a city, let the group know and remind them to take it off. Do NOT let the governor select build orders.
3. Sending units on go-to routes that last beyond your set is acceptable only if they’re heading for a rally point or if you otherwise inform your teammates. NEVER fortify Great People.

India: Sign spamming is rude. Signs can be helpful reminders, but too many signs makes them easily ignored. Once a sign is no longer valid, delete it.

alerum ... you ok with going first? I picked worker because I had to pick something ... up to the team to discuss. There doesn't seem to be much to actually develop so maybe a second scout? I've played some games where the AI doesn't scout much (at all!) and there are lots of huts to grab. Re tech ... I think we should play typical Tokugawa and go for Archery soon (not necessarily first, but soon). I'm happy with no religious techs as that is the way Japan usually plays it.

Actually, I haven't played much Japan, so I'm planning doing a little research in the next 20 mins or so, and see what path I'll take. Yeah, I'll get us started, and totally agree with not worrying about religion... let someone else spread their religion around while we build some real units. :hammer::hammer:

I think the scout will be a good idea for a first build, and if we haven't grown to size 2 by then, I'll throw out a warrior too.

Are we playing the turns as 20/10/5, or 25/10/5?

Looks like we forgot Cam... or did he not want to play?

Ummm... Ruff I just took a look at the save... Are you sure you want to play it at Prince instead of Noble?

And Large? hehehehe... this is gonna be fun.:p

Scratch the switch to Scout... No Tribal Villages are turned on. Think this choice is a huge mistake btw. Especially on Prince level we'll need Goodie Huts or won't be able to fund early research at all, and will probably not make it out of the ancient era.

A few things ...
  • prince is one step up from noble (isn't it ... I am comfortable at Monarch) ... SGs usually play a step lighter so Prince should be fairly easy
  • remember, Japan doesn't usually go to war, so we defend unless they have a city that touches our borders
  • re turns ... edited original post for 30 for you, 20 for the rest of the first round and then 10 from then on (unless heavy war in which case we step down to 5)
  • did I set the map to large? Oh well ... I did do a little map editing to give us a boost thinking that we were only playing a 9CC (ie first ring).
  • cam didn't post a sign up ... but will add if he wants a spin.

i think I remember turning goodie huts off ... and a slightly modified map ... I will leave it at that and let people try and guess what was modified :D

So what is BUG?

So what is BUG?
Good Question. It's a mod ... it stands for 'BtS Unalted Gameplay'. We have enhanced lots of interface features as well as building the ability to turn all the things we have added off. We hope to illustrate all the features of BUG during this SG.

Nah - you just can't run slider at 100% after first few techs (whenever your first settler heads out). Oh yes - remember to keep some cash around for floods, monsoons, forest fires, and other early calamities. Some 20g or so should handle worst random event that can be handled with money early on. A 100g could come handy in some very rare cases, but that's a lot of gold that early.

Checking in. And getting my hands full again. How come I never learn?

This ring stuff is new to me, but should play as a good handicap... Alerum, Prince is a good balance here. I think ruff got it okay!

With all these floodplains, I think worker first is the way to go. Agriculture and Pottery should be early researches too, as we have fishing and wheel. Ruff mentioned archery, so maybe Agri -> Pottery -> Hunting -> Archery -> Mining -> BW.

Good luck all!

I don't like building a worker right off the bat. We won't have Agri in time, and he'll be sitting around for a few. If we wait 1 build, and let the city reach size 2, we'll be able to train a warrior and a worker, and it will add only a few turns. I agree with the research build 100% though. With all those flood plains, we may not even need a chop to get a settler quickly.

Anyway, going to be playing soon so any more suggestion/comments/build orders, let me know within the next few hours.

And thanks for the support pholk - see ya :D

Ruff, you're such a New Yorker.:p
Actually, I'm an aussie that just happens to live / work in NY. However, I do find it annoying when people walk slowly and slow me down. That said, I have found NY to be a very friendly town ... stop in a subway station and look at the subway map and someone will ask if you need help in less than 30 seconds.
