It would be an excellent way to counter the fascist tendencies in Europe and the US. Free gas for everyone. Comrades of Russia unite! :high5:

When will it happen?

If not - why not?

It will happen within a few months because the leaders of the West are all invertebrate cowards who only want to use our armed forces to help our sworn enemies al-Qaeda in Syria.

They keep talking about their Eurasian Union, but it appears only Belarus (which is essentially a puppet state) and Kazakhstan have shown any interest. Overall Russia's behavior in Ukraine and georgia probably wont get it too many members.

Narva in Estonia might want to join?!

It should have been a public poll... :-/

So if the 82% ethnic Russians living there decided to join this Russian union, Russia would decline their request?

Yes, Russia isnt going to try to peel off a territory from a country that is both an EU and NATO member. Russia isnt stupid, its one thing to roughouse with non-aligned countries in its back yard, its another to do it with countries under the protections of powerful organizations. Unless Estonia decides to let Narva separate its not going to happen.

The Eurasian Union treaty is slated to be signed May 1st of this year by Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and later in May by Armenia.

If the situation in Ukraine ends in Federalization as the Russians desire, Eastern Ukraine will effectively be part of the Eurasian Union firmly under Russian influence.

I didn't know that. I wonder if they'll keep the name 'Eurasian Union'?

I don't think the Eurasian Union will be a long-term project, rather, more like a disposable glove, to Russia's knowledge as well.

That's the best name they can think off, TBH I can't think of a better name. Greater Russia? Russian Khanate/Tsardom/Sultanate? Eastern Slavic Federation? You have to include Christians, Muslims, Slavs, Turks, etc.

Or it's just a fictional "Hey, do you remember the Soviet Union? That Was Cool!" club that exists only in the imaginations of people all too few.

Novaya Rossiya!

Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are candidates. But there are opinions that it shouldn't be expanded too fast, a proper union with Belarussia and Kazakhstan has to be established first.

That would be nice, a union in the style of the European Union would bring more stability to the region.

(Unfortunately?) It is unlikely that such a union would be put in place though. While if the Russians did expand their sphere of influence and secured it firmly it would likely increase stability, it would not be a partnership as in the EU in which the Germans, the French, and to a smaller extent, the British prevent each other from dominating, the Russians would have no counterbalance in this union. Ukraine is the only country large enough to do this but it's poor economy and lack of unity would prevent this.

True, but I dont see the union necessarily leading to extreme levels of domination. Russia only tends to get into bully domination mode when a country it thinks should be in its sphere try to get out. The fact these nations are willingly desiring to be in the Russian sphere make me think it will be more benevolent towards them and legitimately try to be helpful.
