[RD] Safe Travels

The first thing I notice is a gun on display in that car on the left. It stands out to me because that would be illegal here in Canada. Even if that's a fake gun, it would still make me eye it suspiciously, as that sort of thing never happens here.

My main concern though is that this family doesn't look like they have much experience with canoeing. I don't know why, but their stance and body language is whispering to me that this is their very first canoeing trip. Plus they seem to be canoeing in a park where people go to hunt. Not only that, but the hunters are parking in the same parking lot, meaning their hunting activities must be underway not too far away. That's a horrible idea, what are they thinking?

I don't know, there isn't really anything here. It's just a cover. Tbh I think it's more telling that people are finding something to talk about here. Now let me see what's written in all those spoiler tags....

Why would the 'hunters' hunt without their gun? The person/people from the pickup truck are not out hunting.

Why would they hunt without their gun? He's not out hunting.
Spoiler :

If we want to accurately parse where that truck, with a gun rack and it's economy/age, would be far and away the most likely to be, it is parked at home where the owner lives or where it is used it for work without regular public traffic. I thought the family was packing up to go until I realized they're tightening, not removing, the straps on the life vests. So they're probably where the truck lives, not where it has traveled to play.

He may well be 'local', but I doubt his home or work is at a boat landing. That is typically where one would would unload their canoe, would it not?

I see people with guns in a wildlife area, I assume they're there to hunt. Unless they're handguns, which in this case it's not. I don't know why they would leave a gun in the car, I assume it's a fake, and they brought the real guns with them.

All the people who I know who are into hunting are for whatever reason conservative and/or lean to the right. Subconsciouly I made that connection here as well

Should all of this be in spoiler tags?

Spoiler :
I don't see a dock. Just a flat spot on what might be a river. Back kayaking was more common the guys with cattle/sheep would hate it when the streams got high enough to be navigable, thus public. Those vacationers would sometimes carry wire cutters for when barbed wire got in the way of portage.

Non-political observations:

3. Where, oh where has anyone had a gun rack on their truck in the last 40 years? I'm pretty 'rural' and I have never seen it. Edit: ok, upon googling, extended cabs gave more options of places to store guns where they are not so visible.

5. Those hats with the strings are so annoying, why anyone would get one is beyond me, unless horseback riding.

On item 3: There was a time when carrying a firearm concealed in your car was a crime in many states. They had to be inaccessible, in the trunk. Since a pick-up truck didn't have a truck the gun rack in the window made the gun 'not concealed' so it was legal to transport. I don't know when those laws started being taken off the books, but that has a lot more to do with the disappearance of gun racks than extended cabs has.

On item 5: Come visit me and we'll go hiking. We have mountains that are bigger than anything the mid-west has, separating the Mojave Desert from the Pacific Coast. The dynamics of the desert and the ocean means that pressure is always equalizing one way or the other, and 'the breath of the continent' gets channeled through the passes and canyons. Bring a hat. With a string.

Note also that canoeing is not so unlike horseback riding in this regard, @Birdjaguar

Sure, I don't see a dock either, but you don't need a dock for a boat landing, it's just a concrete ramp leading into the water for people who bring boats with their pickups or whatever to back the boat into the water. The vacationers in the picture, I don't think parked in this guy's driveway or his company's parking lot, more like a boat landing (all of them have an attached parking lot), or the parking lot of a state park or something.

If I was betting money on this I would say he is more likely out boating/fishing rather than working at a tourist gift shop in the state park. He may well have traveled further than the family, but if I had to bet $ on it, the safer bet would be the family traveled further.

White water rafting sure, canoeing with small kids? You won't be going too fast with them or bouncing up and down. Now, the wind from the mountains, I was not aware of that.

Who knows! ;) I'm just trying to make sense of a New Yorker cover that isn't jiving well.

With no hands free, an errant gust of wind can put your hat in the water easily enough.

When the Santa Ana winds blow a string on your hat doesn't matter. Funneling through a canyon they can take you right off the trail, hat and all. Sierra Pelona lookout gets hurricane force winds pretty much every year, and has clocked over 100MPH.

I was right outside LAX with the devil winds blowing, and that was crazy (the hotel we were staying at was also getting exterior renovations so parts of the scaffolding were coming off and banging the side of the building - I did not envy the hotel staff). I can't imagine what it would be like in the mountain passes where it gets all squeezed in.

how about that progressivism is young (as represented by the kids) and conservatism is old (rusty truck) also, that progressivism needs to spread but warily

The gun in a fantastical spot and aimed at the dads head is disconcerting but literally nothing else is of any note.

He's also really short, or those vehicles are really tall. Unless his massive SUV is parked significantly further forward than the truck, he's also nearer the tailgate than the cab, but you kind of have to hand wave the perspective. Which is weird if you're actually used to caring about where you have firearms pointing.

Half of me thinks this is dull and the other half thinks it's boring.

I'm gonna agree with this, but

Needs more robots and explosions.

It needs some aesthetic, like some pink and blue coloring in the sky and a bust of Alexander the Great inserted randomly into the image somewhere

Alexander the great riding a giant robot with explosions all around?

We can do this you guys.
