sc:01 Moddern war

Got it! Good turns, but I disagree about pillaging seafood. (Attacking the caravels is OK). If our goal is to win ASAP then it would be OK, but according to our scenario, we're not supposed to attack the other AI until WW2/modern age. In fact, I think we should probably doing everything we can to make sure we have worthy opponents over there, otherwise I think the game will get boring. It's too bad we couldn't increase the level to emperor right now.

I agree playshogi, we're going to be hard pushed to have a balanced industrial or modern war anyway. If we start killing all their see food, it's we'll just roll over them.

I think we may have to start helping one AI on each continent to help them dmoinate their continent and have a chance to tech up to our level. What do you think?

I guess we should have listened to the people suggesting Emperor. But then again, I found the early wars tough, but not too tough. I guess the hive mind is much better at optimizing cities than I am...

Yeah, you guys are probably right. I'm just so used to making the most out of any advantages I have, I forgot these SG's are about more than winning. I don't think it is quite time to start gifting the AI stuff though.

Near future tech path should be some order of physcs -> communism -> biology.

I'm sorry, guys. I'm burned out on civ and I don't think I can continue.

Ouch, sorry to hear that shogi. You will be missed.

Perhaps we should put the game on pause and try to recruit another player. Any lurkers out there interested?

@ Simon: maybe you should post a notice in the SG registration thread.

Sounds like a plan.
I'll try to get that done today.
Yes, lets put it on pause for 7 days and see where we're at.

I'd love to join if you'll have me. I need some modern warfare practice too, it's fun, but my games end in a space race because I hate naval warfare.

Well, our captain hasn't spoken yet, but it's fine with me.

Since we've decided to forgo the use of privateers, I'd suggest building a good number of frigates for coastal defense. The eastern shore is particularily important because of power hungry De Gaul. Tyr to make sure to build the ships in cities with drydocks, although all coastal cities should porobably get one eventually anyway.

For tech, finish physics for the free GS then reevaluate the situation. Some options are:

Communism will nab us a free spy, although no other AI's are close to stealing it yet.

Corporation would be nice for Wall Street, but it obsoletes the G. Lighthouse.

Otherwise maybe Rifling or Bio.

The GS from physics should build an academy in the second highest :science: city (after Thebes). Probably Helio or memphis? :dunno:

Ahh, sorry. I was waiting for the weekend, but you're right madtomw, lets get things moving again. If anyone still wants to jump in too just shout.

The roster was

1: Simon_c <-- On Deck --
2: S.ilver
3: Madtown <-- Just Played --
4: playshogi **UP NOW**

So, lets slot Quotey right in there. Are you up for playing now ? And can you finish and post by Thursday 1200GMT ?
If not, I'll swap because I won't be able to play between Friday and Monday night (maybe Monday night UK time, maybe not until Tuesday)

You have 24hours to respond :)

Throw him right into the fire eh Simon? :p

Ok, my need for a skip is gone so long as I can play sometime this week.

Of course I've been keeping up!

Not sure about ressearch on Physics- perhaps Bio or heading for Rails would be better? Liz is the only one able to research Physics. We're VERY ahead.

You could change the difficulty to Emp/Immortal now I believe- by saving this as a wordbuildersave file and playing a turnset from that, changing the difficulty.

And speaking of cities, how do you feel about me settling a couple of black dots? I like them personally, and they do contribute. ESPECIALLY if we get harbours up.

I will play tommorow whether these are answered or not.

e: speaking of harbours--- why mercantilism? In Merc you're running 934sci and -21gpt@70%, at FM you run 936 and +9gpt@70. Unless they're all engineers for hammahs.

e2: Actually, I wouldn't bother. Most AIs are in Merc.

I chose to run for physics now because we could use the academy sooner, IMO. We have had a dearth of scientists all game and only got our fisrt academy up last turnset. I figured a second would benefit us more earlier.

As you said, most AI's are in merc. Plus we have SoL and are running representation, so the extra 2 specialists are contributing a fair bit to the economy.

That said, I've seen you post plenty in the strategy forum so I'm confident that you can decide for yourself what is most appropriate.

If you guys still after another player I'd like to join, I was interested in this game at the start but didn't have the time then to commit.

Hi Mighty Dwaarf,
I was always after 5 or 6 players so welcome aboard.

I'll slot you in either just after quotey, or just after myself. Depending when quotey posts.

And to the tech direction, I like the idea of getting physics for the GS. Not that we're slow in the tech race.

What do people think we need to do to get a challenge in the industrial and modern ages ? Is now the right time to up the AI skill ? Would it make much difference at this stage ?

Good news, bad news time.

Good news is I'm playing.

Bad news is on turn 2.

This is part of my turn 0 log:

We also MUST beef up our coastal defences. De Gaulle has enough on his hands, but I assume it's recent. He has Astronomy though. I assume eh just got enough on his hands as nothing was said about it that I remember.

This is a screenshot, and part of my turn 2 log.

De Gaulle declares war. We are going to lose Athens. Hammurabi won't declare war on him, as he won't speak to us....

I chose to highlight the attack force as opposed to the defence force, at the defence force is around 4000 years old- It's the Athenian War Chariot regiment, who will soon be destroyed.

After we lose Athens, we will procede to lose Sparta, then perhaps Busiris or Kahun. Then it will be the end of my set.

What to do?

And don't even suggest switching into slavery and nationhood... I used up out switch on turn 1, running off to Caste System.

I *knew* I should have insisted we kept our home land troops up to date.

We can't even get into slavery ? Bugger. At a guess there's 20+ units on those boats.

Maybe this is why playshogi did a runner ........

I've not looked at the save recently. (That's probably my screwup as Captain not checking it and keeping an eye on the macro level stuff like de-gaule building up)

I think we'll have to upgrade what we can so it costs de-gaule as much as we can make it in taking those first few cities, switch everything to military production and try to stop him getting to our core.
Then build up forces for a fight back. We will need to regain the seas to keep him from re-enforcing his troops.

I'll comment more in a couple of hours when I've had a chance to look at the save.

Oh well. We wanted a bit more of a challenge....

taking a quick look at the save, I'd say:

* Drop science to 0.
* upgrade the troops in sparta, and the chariot in Athens if we have the money. Try to cause some pain for the invaders, but yes, we will loose Athens and Spata. Lets hope he raises Busiris :-)
* bring as many troops as you can north to Navajo and Lisht. That's where we should try to hold them.
* Get some walls in Lisht too.
* as soon as you can, revolt to slavery and nationhood.
* once we hold him, switch research to steal.
* then build cannons and ironclads to recapture our cities, and repel re-enforcements.

I'm guessing there are maces and cats on the boats. I guess we'll see soon.

Good luck !!

I would question why you switched to caste system when we needed emancipation to grow cottages faster (I don't think the availability of certain specialists outweighed the cottage growth)... but that's water under the bridge at this point.

I knew CdG was building up for an invasion against us. I just didn't figure that he'd upgrade all his ships in a couple turns after getting astro then send over outdated troops. He will pay dearly for this indescretion.

Yes, we will lose some cities -pray that he doesn't raze them. As soon as his troops are out of gas we should be able to easily sweep him from the lands. I'm not sure about ironclads though, as I think frigates will do a good enough job against his caravels and galleons. Plus, ironclads will probably take forever to get to the battleground. Steel followed by railroads would be my choice for tech path - mostly for MG's.

We need to be prepared to rebuff a second set of reinforcements (they may already be on the way). He undoubtedly has been upgrading more galleons back home and may very well have more troops to send over. If were quick with some navy, we may be able to sink them before landing.

Good luck Quotey!

Galleons already? I know he didn't have Astro when I played my set, so he must've blown a lot of cash upgrading them from Galleys. Whatever is in those boats probably hurts though, and is probably maces and the like.

Definitely a good time to drop science to 0% to build some cash, especially since science is at 70%. Not sure why we needed/wanted caste system, as I don't recall us needing to run excess specialists anywhere (I think we're running sort of a hybrid economy).

We'll probably get an AP option to stop the war against us sooner or later. Whether we choose to make use of it is another story.
