SCH0001 - Learning FFH

On the start:

Well I see no incentive to settle anywhere than in place. We have a great grassy capital with:

-A food source so we can work those hills

-2 reasonably good commerce resources

-Enough hills for early production(4 in the current view)

-A river, which will make it easier to hook up cities

Therefore settling in place would seem to be a good plan of action, but we could move our scout 1N to see anything better. Our warrior should nab the goody hut after we settle our city, wherever it is.

On the opening techs:

This is where I have close to no idea on what to do.

I'd say to go Crafting-Mining-BW-Calendar to open up all those worker actions, but if you guys want to insert religion, or military techs in there, I'm game.

On the opening build:

Obviously a worker won't do any good in the beginning so we should only build a worker when we're researching BW.

I can't estimate how long it'll take well, but I reckon it'll be 3 warriors/scouts(or something else, I dunno) until BW is starting. By then we'll have a large population base.

OR

We could build something like warrior-warrior-settler-worker, so we could have a second city up and running early. I'm more in favor of this, mostly because the game will be rather boring until we can do something.

But then again, I'm a new FFH player, and I know nearly nothing about the magic and stuff(I really normally stick to the basic stuff in ffh), so hopefully someone experienced can give some advice.

We definitely are going to want to head up the mounted tech line to unlock Hippus' strongest units, but to begin we need to target both Bronze Working and Education through Ancient Chants and Agriculture. We also might think about Mysticism for God King to help early settlers pop out that much faster.

Yeah as I said, teching is my weak point.

I was imagining something that prioritized BW and then education/horseback riding(and other horse techs), but whatever comes first won't change much.

I'm having a little trouble running the mod :( so I can't really comment much just yet. I'll try and get it ironed out, so I can load the start and decipher what the hell you guys are talking about ;)

Yeah groo, if you need some help let me know. I spent a while before I realized the file was an .exe

Thanks Guys!

Okay got it working :crazyeye:, same as krick I didn't realise it was an executable and just popped it in my mods folder! odd thing is it nearly loaded.

Okay I loaded up the start and had a closer look at our leader and the tech tree. Okay now I'm confused! :crazyeye:  So take everything I say with a pinch of salt.

First of all, settle in place looks like the best course providing the scout reveals nothing else.

As Krick said, before we can do much with our capital, other than farms, were going to need Crafting > Mining > B/Working but that seems like its going to take a while. Would it be worth going for calander first to get the dye online? to speed things up. I guess we also need to head down A.husb & HorseBackRiding as early as possible so we can find us some horses.

I'm just completley ignoring the bottom half of the tech tree at the moment! Whats that all about?

Lurking...
may i suggest calendar before bronze working?
You already have agriculture so calendar is a tech you can aim for directly. that +6 commerce per turn (or is it +5- i don't recall) you'll be getting from the dyes will pay for itself quickly enough. I think that you'll tech to bronze working faster if you pick up calendar first than if you went bronze working directly.

(oops- i see that Groogaroo said the same thing... in that case- i think you should listen to him).

Also, you may want to consider a worker first. Once you have that corn farmed, you can adopt the agriculture civic and that corn becomes a 7 food tile (i think- i might be off a bit)... you'll grow faster if you get that tile farmed early than if you wait.

Also, the Hippus palace provides horse resources so dont worry too much about finding a source and hooking it up (i think).

My two cents.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing this played out... i quite enjoy FFH.

Oops, I thought those were forested

That's a good idea. Something like Worker-Warrior-Warrior-Settler could work.

Yeah you get 2 mana and horses instead of 3 mana.

Let us know if you want to play; I think schwartz was looking for another person.

Calendar first seems like a good idea to me. The worker can first farm the corn, then head for the dyes. (and indeed switch to agrarianism so the farm gets another food)

Military will be provided as soon as we head for BW, which should also be a priority with all the forests in the BFC. Techpath Calendar-Crafting-Mining-BW seems good to me. Note that copper is already revealed with mining, so we can plan a second city to grab copper if possible.

After that, we should be taking Exploration, Ancient Chants and Education (in no particular order) to get our surroundings improved. After that... well, that really depends on our situation. ;)

Opps! Didn't realise that  ... Cool! :) I guess we are all learning this stuff as we go along. Where's that FFH expert we need to fill the last spot? ;)

Worker first is a good idea, we can also farm the Reagents/Spices tile for 3:food: 2:commerce: a nifty little tile to start off along with the 1:commerce: from the corn and the commerce from the dye should give our science the kick start we need to head to bronze working in a decent time. :)

I think we should do calendar then Educatio nbefore BW if we plan to settle cities. If we hit 80% or less research BW will take 70+ turns to research, but if we get edu we can cottage RIGHT after BW, and have city states to keep costs low.

That's also a good idea.

BTW, I'll probably be gone next week Monday-Friday, so skip me if my turn hasn't come up yet.

City States is at Cartography, which would be another diversion.

As for the whole tech discussion, main problem is that we don't know anything besides our capital and we don't know whether we even can cottage other lands. If we get some wonderful FP lands or riverside green cottaging the new cities is a good idea, but if we're in a forest BW should still take priority.

Lurking...

I wouldn't put a settler too high in your build order. Barbs in FFH are really nasty (but they provide amazing xp-farming opportunities--up to 100xp!), and you'll probably want at least 5-6 warriors before you start looking for a second city.

Good luck guys, I'll be watching with interest.

Was this changed in 0.33? I'l install and check, but I rarely researched cartography in my 0.32 games and had city states.

e: Yest, City States was moved to Cartography from .32 to .33. Blech.

I still think City States might be a lesser priority after we've teched off BW, Calendar, Education, Exploration. BTW if you think we've discussed enough someone can take it for 30 turns or so, I can play possibly tonight if not.

I can start off if you guys want; I've got plenty of time, and I'm gonna be away next week anyways.
