scientology!

Two words for Scientology:

Intergalactic Walrus.

P.S. Vietcong, you forgot to close the quote. Add a slash to the closing bracket, making it [/quote].

I saw an excerpt from an interview where he was defending his religion on channel4 news tonight. He seemed a bit stressed by the questions - he didn't seem insane though.
Looks can be deceiving. The line of questioning in that interview had him stitched up and he smiled through it as though he was right all along. Ignorance is bliss and the blinkers are on. (I'm not usually this judgemental)

An aside: Anyone ever heard of the Landmark Forum? It's a 'self actualisation' school which tours around offering its 'amazing courses'. I went to one and it was great. Then I joined real life  . A friend went all the way with the Landmark. We ended up phoning him everyday in Australia from England to remind him who he really was. He went very much like Mr Cruise is now, and it's not just a case of jealousy of another's happiness.

Oh, and for the complete scoop on Scientology:

(Scientology Illustrated is damn funny.)

Is it a religious cult or more of an ideology?

In other words does he need to be deprogrammed or interrogated?
I like the guy and his movies so hopefully it is the former.

As a Christian, I see it as a religious cult.

@Rambuchan,
My parents went on that!

I really don't think it's a cult or anything though. Just a standard self-esteem/confidence type thing...like group...whatever.

I'd better keep an eye on it... :scan:

Edit: Tell some more of your experience, if you can. :)

I had one relative entangled in scientology 10 years ago. It's amazing how much money he extorted his parents to pay for complete crap this sect told him was necessary, amazing and sad. He ended up in mental rehab.
I wouldn't mind the Scientology being an ideal, if only it did not brainwashed people in order to get unsane amounts of money.

So to me, the Church of Scientology is a fraud and a sect whose sole purpose is to extort money from mentally fragile people.

Scientology is it's own punishment. If you're dumb enough to be a Scientologist, you don't deserve your money or your mind, and you've merited the higher risk of murder by Scientologist superiors.

I object to that characterization.

By stating that "Tom Cruise has fallen to the Dark Side of Scientology", you are implying that there is a "Light Side of Scientology", which is an oxymoron.

This is one of things that just bring people together and yes I mean the scientology but in sense it's something we can all hate and have laugh at together.

Rmsharpe is right these people that join the cult deserve it and each other.

However the audition methods are psychologial lesson to us all how to deal with our own history and past experiences so read them freely from the internet and learn and forget whole pile of crap of scientogology otherwise altogether.

religouns are nothing more then larger cults, and vise versa.*sp*

I will probably open up a thread on it some time. If you want to first then go ahead, I'll share my experiences of the Landmark Forum there. I suspect it would go off-topic from this thread pretty quick

I used to hate sceintology but now I find it to be a great invention. Just think of the sheer genius of it, founding a religion and extorting your followers, many of whom are movie stars. I wish that I'd thought of it.

Yeah, and you're just a smaller Hitler, and he was a large-scale version of you.

BZZZZT! WRONG!

I'll just note in passing that you seem to have been traumatized by a religious nutjob at some point; please don't take it out on the perfectly nice theists around here. If you want to bash fundies, visit Perfection's Creationism thread, but my christian church has never extorted money from anyone.

In short, what the smeg were you smoking when you wrote that? :crazyeye:

Your extension of his argument is absurd. He never said cults or religions require one to give up their money. He simply said the line between a cult and religion is negligible, implying that it's mainly semantic. He did not bash fundies. It is simply a fact that cults and religions are virtually identical.

Strictly speaking, the correct definition of cult is 'any system of belief' and makes no value judgments, the result being that everyone has their own definition of 'cult' and what religions do or do not qualify.
