Despite the fact that I am of Scottish and Welsh heritage, I think that to split up Britain would be one of the stupidest events in western history. Why go from being a world class economic/political power to being as politically irreverent as Central America on the world stage. Micro nationalism has turned the Balkans from a political backwater to politically non existent in an incredibility short amount of time. For proof of that just look at how little attention the ECB pays to countries like Croatia or hell Greece as compared to Germany or France. Or, look at how Macedonia desperately wants to join NATO and has made great expenditures toward that objective, yet because of a naming dispute Greece has vetoed their admission. Through all of this the rest of Europe doesn't give a crap about what should be an important political event (the joining of a military alliance) because of the players involved. Pushing for greater state powers for Northern Ireland and Scotland withing the United Kingdom would serve them far better than independence. The new EU treaty being negotiated now will more than likely push the UK out of the EU in 5 or so years anyway. And why would Scotland want to leave a heavily integrated political union just to join another union that will infringe upon its newly granted sovereign powers almost as much and will actually be far more detrimental to its future?
