Screenshot analysis!

Mhrm Trade and Economics on different tiles? And Food and Health could be combined too as a late mid game tile (think Hospitals/those food labs).
Mhrm, didnt the article say there will be 5 victory conditions? Domination, Culture, Science, Diplo and...? Maybe there will be something entirely new.
Spy stuff is a good thought though.

Time? (ie score after 500 turns?)

Art style is not tied to graphical performance.

Repeat it with me :)

It's not necessarily about performance. A simpler blocky art style is a boon on a small screen when you use the tip of your finger rather than a cursor.

I wonder if this game will have pops or do you think district have replaced pops as well, the district system do seems to be inspired by Warlocks Master of Arcane.

CiV had a touch-enabled mode. It didn't mean a great deal for the gameplay or graphics, did it?

I think the problem here is the assumption that "I don't like the graphics ergo it's obviously for mobile". Your opinions about graphics do not mean that it's obviously designed for mobile.

It means you have a particular subjective taste in art, and that your taste is no better or worse than anyone elses'. Learn to be more accepting of what other people might like. You don't see me complaining about how CiV's art style was too blurred because of the emphasis on realism. I recognise that what I like isn't what other people like, but I don't presume that what I like is best.

EDIT

Which you shouldn't be doing with a AAA strategy game, in my opinion. It's not just the graphics that you have to downgrade to cram a good 4X into a phone.
You do realise that not only was XCOM ported to tablets without sacrificing any of the experience when played on a PC, but the development pipelines for these platforms are actually different?

You don't sacrifice things from the PC platform. You build the PC platform and then cut the mobile platform down to size. I work in mobile software development, I have a small amount of insight into the realities of how this actually works. People fearmonger way too much about mobile gaming (and I don't even do games), it's a depressing elitist kneejerk reaction.

I actually kind of like the new style. It reminds me, at least in part, of Skyward Sword. Realistic graphics are cool and all, but they tend to become bland after a while, and they age SUPER quickly. To go to the common example, the original Wind Waker today looks better than Twilight Princess, and that's a 4 year gap!

In particular, I don't care for the move to fewer, larger unit figures. I really liked the "army" feel of Civ V units with many figures.

I definitely agree with this. They could have kept with the same cartoon art style they have gone for, without having massive units. The expanded cities should make the world feel more realistic, but the giant units are a movement in the other direction.

I'm not against it being ported to mobile devices, I just don't like the art and am giving a theory about why they chose it.

I'm okay with the cartoony graphics. In fact, I prefer them versus the super realistic graphics. I can't wait!

Oh please, for the love of God. Do not do this! I don't want a game that resemble an art style that only appeal to infantile kids. I want a game that depict grass as simply real grass in high texture. Not this silly artificial nonsense. I want real mountains. Not this Candyland crap where it look like I can lick the icing off the top of the freaking mountain. Pathetic!

And I am not going to begin with the units... It has the look and feel of a mobile game. Might as well go with this style:

Damn, I always forget about that one. Something new could have been nice. ^^" Even if it's just something like...uh... "Religious victory" :p

I'd like a religious victory, but how would you differentiate it from a cultural victory?

Err so I had a bunch of questions and things I noticed so I thought I'd just put them on the pics and upload them here :D

I think the biggest question to come from this is how much more will be on the map itself; It looks like Cities can have tiles (districts?) specialising a resource or function, away from the city centre. It also looks like wonders are built directly onto the map. Exciting times.

Dock in a city that isn't itself on the sea is a good catch, and a great addition! No more having to build on the coast just to unlock coastal buildings, if a city can build a dock district regardless.

And if that is the case, it might be a factor? But it wouldn't have been a defining choice. Art style is usually locked-down very early on to prevent the art team wasting cycles (as they're a precious resource in any development team).

It's very likely that this style was chosen independently of any platform choices.

I'd like a religious victory, but how would you differentiate it from a cultural victory?

You owning the holy city of the religion of 80% of the world?

It would be all about spreading your religion to every edge of the world obviously (and maybe building something vatican-like or preventing schisms)!
Well, I dunno how they will do culture again, I somehow doubt it will be like tourism (though possible, this could also be another district btw!). Anyway, I guess culture victory could be more focused on your own empire again?

Looks similar to Portugal's colors in Civ 5

I think the city style is early East Asian from comparing it to the Japan pics. Based on the colors and the fact that they get included earlier and earlier with each iteration, I'd guess it's Korea.
