Avernum: Escape from the Pit and Avernum 2: Crystal Souls are both re-releases of the original two Avernum games (which were in themselves re releases of the Exile games, made around the time I was born!).
The animations are still primitive, but they for the most part get all the information across cleanly.
I tried Eschalon but couldn't get into it. I'm not a fan of plots where the conceit to do exposition dump is "Your character has amnesia, ask people to find out more about the world". Plus, the random loot with limited loot early on just left a bad taste in my mouth.
Picked up Killing Floor 2 today. Had a potato team that welded the door shut with me outside. Was overwhelmed by zed and resorted to the only honorable tactic afforded to me.
And now for some more Skyrim battles, this time with the very lore-friendly muskets! I learned how to mod in weapons and stuff to leveled lists and/or NPCs so I dicked around by adding muskets to some of the Stormcloak and Imperial soldiers. Otherwise was just messing around to test my modlist and make sure everything was in order before I start my real playthrough tomorrow or the day after. If you're wondering why everything is so green, I'm using the Spring Overhaul with VandB ENB. Figured it was an acceptable compromise between using Tropical Skyrim while still keeping things lore-friendly.

Anyhow, current Sword of the Stars campaign as the Humans.
Morrigi cruiser approaching my battle line in a last-ditch attempt to defend the colony.
Concentrating fire on the Morrigi command cruiser. The cruiser on the right is unleashing a full broadside of phasers and neutron beams.
(Phasers are good! Pinpoint accuracy and instantaneous tracking beams. Their only downside is (comparatively) low damage output, difficulty in research, and their expense to mount on ships. I'm glad the pseudo-randomized tech tree was feeling nice and let me have them. Usually only the Liir and Morrigi get phasers.)
I increased the grass density and have a few mods that alter flora textures/meshes, including the Spring Overhaul, Flora Overhaul, and Unique Grasses and Groundcovers. Personally I think it looks green while still realistic enough (if you've ever seen a tundra or mountain region during the spring).
Surprisingly there is very little hit to my fps. In fact I don't think there really is any; without the ENB my fps is consistently around 55-60. Most if not all of my fps hit currently is from the ENB - exteriors I'm at ~35-45, cities I'm at ~40-55, and interiors ~50-60.
Yeah, outdated game engine is outdated game engine. I think if I used higher resolution face texture mods and a higher quality ENB it wouldn't be as noticeable, but hey.
Muskets are from Project Flintlock and the reload time seems to be comparable to the crossbow reload times (a bit slower, according to the mod page, but it's not really noticeable) given that the animations, while different than the crossbow's, are based off on it to an extent. So I guess it's more like 19th century muskets than their Renaissance-era counterparts.
