Yesterday a random scenario surprised me by (1) being a lot larger than I expected and (2) proving to be enough of a challenge that I haven't beaten it to my satisfaction here. I began with one brigade of troops and (I thought) one objective. As soon as I sent them into the woods, the rebel brigade charged and routed them. They hadn't even ENGAGED properly, the rebels charged on sight. Within seconds I had another brigade, and I sent them into the woods to show the first few regiments what proper soldiering was. THEY RAN, TOO! And then I heard a barrage of alerts -- "Reinforcements coming up, general!" "New enemy officer has been spotted, sir!", again and again, and pretty soon I had more troops than I knew what to do with.
The game was just vomiting up troops from nowhere, and I had so many units waiting for orders at the same time it felt like a RTS game. The same thing was happening with the rebels. I had artillery scattered all over the field, but I hadn't had time to manuever any of them into good positions. Two of my batteries were caught between the main rebel body and the rebel reinforcements, and I lost them. I THEN realized that there was another objective further west.
I was soundly defeated, in part because I never paused the game to evaluate my situation and start making a plan. I like playing short skirmishes by the seat of my pants. I've never had this many routed regiments!
I tried again, this time holding off until my initial two brigades had finally arrived. Unfortunately I don't have any shots of that battle. I'm going to keep trying, though. As you can see here, despite my having both objectives, the second try was only a marginal victory because I lost so many troops. Those woods around Warfield's Farm were a real meatgrinder. If anyone wants to try it, the variant number is
S37448.
