ladder ffa official settings were turn limit and score victory when i played civ5
maybe in civ5 you've managed to recently tweak the rules to be on the same team as actual strategy gamers, but civ4 ladder = total joke
There maybe common game settings by some or many players, but they are not "official" as Civplayers has no official game settings outside of defining what a Cton is, but even then we don't tell players they have to play Ctons. Players decide what is played, so if you don't like the settings of a host, host your own game.
This seems to be a common mispreception that league games have to be this or that, there is no such thing, if you don't like the current trend in games, start a new trend. This is how OCC became popular in Civ4 or how Future games became popular in Civ3 etc.
But the fact is that most players do not have 8 hours on a week night to play a game of civ, so games have to have settings that fit peoples free time. You may not think that a turn limit game or a game with city elim is "real civ" but what is the alternative? Never finishing a game? The fact is that there is no such thing as real civ, civ is what ever a player finds enjoyable, if Firaxis didn't want players to play a game in a certain way they would not give us these options in the first place.
Right now the Civ5 league is playing mostly games with no turn limits, but they still use settings were the game is pretty much decided in the 4 hour range, if it was not, people would simple change the settings for it too work. League players maybe pretty hard core, but they still need sleep :-/
