Sengir03 - The Orwellian State

Ragnar DOESN'T HAVE COPPER.

Why:confused: Umm we are 1.2 in Green of his strength with Archers and Warriors, numbering how many???? 3 Archers and 3 warriors. NO walls, No Horses, NO COPPER, NO SPEARS.

Our Mighty Army, could AND SHOULD storm the Central European area's. Size all that lovely Tea (cha) for yourselves, Oh the chocolate rations will need to be cut back to 20%.

Grab the Workers, what will Ragnar do, build some troops, and huff and puff at us. With No workers=No Pastures. So he has to build some more, further delaying him. Hang them in the Park for their war crimes. Spies, all of them, Eurasian spies, agents of GOLDSTIEN :D

Washington and Sitting Bull are the Scary ones with Copper, we are at 70% and 85% in RED

D'oh I completely forgot the power screen, and just squinted at that hill for about 10 minutes willing the fog away. I'm an idiot.

Ragnar does have horses near his capital so if we go ahead I'd try to get some bowmen over there to stall him. Going AWOL for a few days.

Enjoy your wedding and aftermath Brian Shanahan!

But he was still building a farm on top of horses, which probably means he doesn't know he has horsies. :smug:

Thanks Norvin, enjoy being on AWOL. And in addition to Happyturtles comment, if we attack now getting AH will not help him after, unless he has a third city in NW beside the other horsies.

Due to machinations, no doubt as part of a conspiracy by Goldstein, it hadn't come to my intention that it was my turn to provide the narrative for the continuation of our empires rise to glory. The great story of our empire will resume shortly.

Bah, Goldsteins agents have succeeded in putting me temporarily out of business

(I'm going to need a skip for the rest of the week, RL creeped up on me).
If nocho is around he can pick it up, but I seem to recall he was without comp temporarily. If so, anyone willing can post a got it and play.

Roster:
1) nocho
2) happyturtle
3) IPEX-731BA5DD06
4) Whosit (skip until 17th of August)
5) Brian Shanahan (skip until Aug 18)
6) Norvin Green (AWOL for 'a few days' starting Jul 30)
7) Sengir (skip until 7th of August)

Look at all those skips! TREASON! :p

I don't see nocho saying he needed a skip, but if he's without a computer, I guess he wouldn't. If we haven't heard from him by tomorrow, I'll pick it up then.

Just to piss off happyturtle even more I'm inclined to ask for a skip! :p:lol:

Well, my regular civ comp is not accessible right now as it's still packed in a box, but since this is still early stages my laptop might be able to handle it. I'll try to give it a shot tomorrow or Tuesday.

Yeah, I remember running civ on my old computer. By end game, it would take ten minutes or more to end a turn. And it just flat out couldn't handle large maps. Normal or smaller only.

A shortish report as I don't have an awful lot of time.

Anyway, the Ministry of Information is pleased to announce the expansion of our glorious empire.

First off we settled city number 3. A settler was 1N of a sign saying City, but I settled where it was, basically to be able to hook up the clam immediately. A border pop would have taken forever and it could only work awful tiles otherwise.
SNGR320006.jpg

The outcry for corrective measure against the loud-spoken Vikings with their obnoxious habit of speaking up whatever crosses their alcohol-ridden minds, was so loud, we stepped in.
SNGR320007.jpg

Uppsala was defended by a lone archer so I couldn't resist the temptation of trying my luck with our 2 bowmen. The result was rather satisfactory.
SNGR320010.jpg

An army of bowmen followed up north but finding Nidaros on a hill with 3 archers was a bit too much, so we let Ragnar off the hook for now.
SNGR320014.jpg

Pottery was dicovered and went mysticism next for badly needed culture in our newest cities. Some monuments to glorify Big Brother will be needed. After mysticism came in, went for aesthetics. Wang has alpha by now, I guess aesthetics will be a good trading chip when eventually we get it.

Went for another settler in Babylon and whipped it. Sent it east and currently it's in a position to settle near the corn. I think I actually prefer the computer's blue circle to the marked spot, as at least it'll have 3 hills and could be a half decent production city, or at least be a decent hybrid.
SNGR320016.jpg

On the last turn whipped monuments in Uppsala and Dur as they just grew to size 2 and also a granary in Akkad as it was working unimproved tiles.
SNGR320017.jpg

And that's it for now. Oh, just to note I hooked up the horses. Vandal may be nice to conquer with some chariots, last time I checked it had 3 archers guarding it.

Didn't convert to buddhism by the way. Not sure whether the variant allows it (wasn't there something about only getting a religion we found? Can't remember now...).

Before I run the next turnset, let's have some discussion with the few of us who are too loyal to the State to request skips. Lurkers are welcome to chime in as well, though of course as non-citizens you will immediately afterwards be sent to the Ministry of Love for reprogramming. :yup:

Topics for discussion:
Where do we want to settle our next city?
Why not conquer Vandal with Bowmen instead of waiting to build Chariots?
Shouldn't we tech Iron before Aesthetics?
Shouldn't we chop out a library and start working scientists?
Do we want to try and found a religion at all or remain athiests?
WE NEED MORE WORKERS!!!!!
Anything else of note?

7) Sengir (skip until 7th of August)

Where do we want to settle our next city?

I like nocho's spot on the coast. We can eventually build another city on the flat plain coastal tile north of this city and share the corn.

Why not conquer Vandal with Bowmen instead of waiting to build Chariots?

I would be wary of sending too many bowman away from Uppsala in case Ragnar decides to try to re-take his city.

Shouldn't we tech Iron before Aesthetics?

Nah, let's wait and trade for it.

Shouldn't we chop out a library and start working scientists?

We can go Granary>LH>library in Babylon and run 2 scientists

Do we want to try and found a religion at all or remain athiests?

Not that interested - we can just use Buddhism after we take Wang Kon down

WE NEED MORE WORKERS!!!!!

Steal more from Ragnar!

With Izzy's cultural victory near, I think it's time for me to run another SG, one that's been brewing for some time now:

The Orwellian State
Variant rules:
- We cannot declare upon AI's not on our continent, nor take cities not on our continent untill we have both conquered our continent completely, as well as have reached the industrial age.
- Upon fullfilling both requirements we are to declare immediately upon one of the other continents, and must stay at war with at least one of them for the remainder of the game.
- Other Orwellian game elements are encouraged (Police State and such).

About the extra rules:
I dislike putting to much in stone, still, some more rules might be in order.
I think that spy buildings first fits the game. Also, have a spy in every city of ourselves before we can send any of them out.
No further restrictions on specialists or GP's (merchants and artists can be used for state purposes :D ).
Civics: I can agree with no Free speech, no Free Religion and no Emancipation. No other restrictions.
Religion: Only adopt a self-founded religion.

Other rules can still be suggested of course.

No Buddhism. We either found a religion or do without. Unless we take a holy city... not sure if that's close enough to 'self founded' or not.

Where do we want to settle our next city?

I like nocho's spot on the coast. We can eventually build another city on the flat plain coastal tile north of this city and share the corn.
I also like my spots.:D

Why not conquer Vandal with Bowmen instead of waiting to build Chariots?

I would be wary of sending too many bowman away from Uppsala in case Ragnar decides to try to re-take his city.
Yeah, bowmen don't have any plus over ordinary archers when fighting other archers. I tried my luck with Uppsala against the odds, but it had only 1 archer defending it. Vandal had 3 when I looked. That'd take 6 to 9 bowmen. Better try with chariots.

Shouldn't we tech Iron before Aesthetics?

Nah, let's wait and trade for it.
Was tempted to go for IW as well. I am not against it, if only for military purposes (Ragnar, Vandal) if we're lucky enough to have some iron on this barren map. Since probably we'll want to research aesth sooner or later anyway found it less compromising to dump some research into that than into IW.

Shouldn't we chop out a library and start working scientists?

We can go Granary>LH>library in Babylon and run 2 scientists
Yeah, that sounds okay for Babylon, though it's a bit unfortunate we should use the cap for that. But there's not a better place for now.

EDIT: Actually, we could also use Akkad. With wheat and cow it has 4 food surplus that could be consumed by two scientists as it doesn't have other good tiles to work anyway, apart from the mine. The happy cap must be at 4 so unless we build a temple (is that allowed under the rules? Would need priesthood), it can grow to size 4 with 2 scientist, wheat+cow. When we have nearly enough food to grow to size 5, we can give the cow to Uppsala and work the mine, the wheat and 2 scientists while shrinking slowly and give back the cow before decreasing to size 3, etc. Or even just work an ugly 1 food tile when hitting size 4 (or a farmed plain) to stagnate with the scientists and give the cow to Uppsala more permanently.

Do we want to try and found a religion at all or remain athiests?

Not that interested - we can just use Buddhism after we take Wang Kon down
If we happen to be first at CoL or Philo that would be nice, wouldn't necessarily chase the religion though.

WE NEED MORE WORKERS!!!!!

Steal more from Ragnar!
More workers are fine, though I don't think we're that horribly understaffed in that department as the capital letters suggest. :) At some point I had nothing better to do than farming plains... Still, getting the Babylon peninsula working will indeed require some effort from our Joyous Workforce.

Yeah, it was mostly looking at the Babylon area that make me go 'eep! Not enough workers!'

Akkad for the library sounds good to me.

Not sure if we should allow the citizens to worship something that is not The State. I don't think the rules forbid a temple, but it seems dubious to me. :hmm:

Maybe bulb Philo with a second scientist, if we get a second in time?

I still prefer IW to Aesthetics.

I'll wait for Big Brother IPEX to advise before I play though.

ok on next city, I'm big on rivers, the +1 fresh water bonus, and access to levies. Also my planned maps of the cities works all the available tiles, in case we spawn a bonus on them, all are in BFC's of cities.

Babylon should go Library=>Lighthouse, it has enough of a food surplus now to run 2 scientists.

Build Chariots and Conquer Ragnar. That's going to leave us as most hated, but don't want to leave the Prize of his Capital to be Cherry picked by Bull or Washington.

Taking Vandal, would go towards blocking Want in the south. I'd advocate build a library in Babylon, run scientists there, build Chariots elsewhere, and Conquer Ragnar completely. Hang the Diplomacy, we're going to war with them anyway.

Run Scientists to Bulb Philosophy, or Code of laws. Run a State Religion, temples won't work unless we adopt a religion.

If we're going to Eliminate Ragnar, have a settler on hand to block in Washington and Sitting Bull in the North as well, as they'll more then likely have settlers ready to go if and when we take out Nidaros. DON'T settle the current one, use it to block along the Nidaros line to the Western Coast.

Kill Ragnar with Chariots, and BB's Love police.
Use Current settler to block a line to the West coast, next settler should go to that 1 tile island for trade routes. Actually Ragnar has 3 cities, has done it for us.
Bablyon builds a Library, runs scientists and we bulb code of laws (Wang doesn't have priesthood) or Philosophy.
Steal more workers, kill archers in the fields, hang them in the parks. War Criminals all they are.

Issued by the Min of Info or Minifo.

Issued by the Min of Info or Minifo.
I feel a purge coming up, as some high ranking officials in the ministry of information seem to disagree completely with the Minister himself.

I think it is way too early for an attempt to permanently eliminate Ragnar. I think we'll need something better than just chariots, or we'll need an enormous amount of them. Too many archers on a hill with cultural defence, bwah. For now I'd just concentrate on Vandal, with that we'll have a decent enough city count and can work on our economy a bit.

I fail to see why the settler shouldn't settle now at a wet corn, it's about the only decent site left and it has some potential. I do prefer blue circle still as I am rather unimpressed by the levee argument as that city would have exactly 1 river tile profiting from it, so I rather have 2 hills more to work now (3 total) than getting 1 extra hammer lightyears away through an expensive building. The 1 healthpoint less with abundant health resources will be a non-issue for quite a long time. If the city on the north coast is moved 1E we still cover all possible resources in a BFC.

On scientists, maybe we should run 2 in both Babylon and Akkad. Maybe even in Dur as well, as it won't have any good tiles anyway. The more scientists we run the quicker we get through some essential techs.

Big Sister takes over as Chairman for the Ministry of Turnsets. While she longs to go to war to crush the vile Vandals or the villainous Vikings, she recognizes that this is a time for building.

Mostly focused on micromanaging commerce to keep research at 30-40% (and briefly at 50%). Chopped a library in Akkad. All cities had whip anger to work off, which is now gone except in DurKur. I also avoided building units because of upkeep costs, but we'll need to get started on that soon. I just felt it was important to keep from falling too far behind on tech, and we'll need iron for our next war. Unless we don't have it. Then we'll just have to do without.

T0 - settle Nippur at Blue Circle, switch to Iron working, send a Bowman to guard our workers in case Ragnar attacks after the Treaty

T1 - interrupt cottage building to go and farm corn for Nippur. Start a Chariot at Akkad.

T2 - send one worker to chop riverside forests around Akkad for cottaging. Will put hammers towards a library in Akkad. Send the other worker back towards Babylon.

T4 - open borders to improve our foreign trade and commerce. We're at 30/40% research. Since borders are open, I start exploring with the northern warrior.

T5 - Ragnar asks us to convert to Buddhism. No thanks. He also is willing to open borders, but I don't. Send the chariot to investigate Vandal. 3 archers, and being poked around by Wang. We're now working one cottage in Babylon and one in Uppsala, and Dur-Kur's pop will grow next turn, which will also help with commerce.
Spoiler :

Civ4ScreenShot0051.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0052.jpg

T10 - Have sent the chariot around from the south to watch over Vandal under the protection of Wang's archer.

T15 - Library finished in Akkad, and two scientists hired. Started building a cottage on the silk, since we'll have two or three more later, but IPEX may have objections, so I stopped him after one turn. It actually looks like we had enough workers after all, because except for Nippur, I was never working unimproved tiles.

End turn screens:

Had a look; PPP

Whip Granary in Nippur
Upsalla, work 2 food then 3 food and whip on next pop growth for Granary.
Dur-Kurigalzu grow to 4 pop then whip Granary.
Chop 2 forests into Babylon's Library, and run 2 scientists, stagnate at pop 5

Basically just recover the Economy, if we have Iron, start 2 swords to take out Vandal, maybe 3
Do some scouting of Wang Kon as well, with the Chariot

Note that Ragnar and Wang both have access to Horse, while Washington and Sitting Bull don't.
Wang must have a double Gems capital, if not triple, worth scouting out for that alone, should be next target after Ragnars Capital is taken.
