Sentus Populusque Rmnus

Huh. So I uploaded the screenshots of my next update last week or so already but didn't actually write it yet, and now when I'm finally about to do so I notice that my screenshots all have over 60 views already from somewhere. How did that happen? Did all of you sneak a peek? Or rather about ten peeks a person per picture? I don't think I made them public after all...

Edit: Ah nevermind, I'm an idiot, those were the images I already used for the last update, I just forgot to move them into the folder. You see what I'm doing is upload all screenshots I want to use for an update, and after I have finished writing and posting it move them into the folder I made for this game, but apparently I forgot that last step here.

Trade flourished between urbs (that is city, that is Rome) and colonia (that is colony, that is Ravenna). Within a few decades the inhabitants of Ravenna had established organized harvesting of clams and begun construction of a forge.

Spoiler :

Our hunters were welcomed with open arms in Skadar, and even were offered to sell their service, but they denied it because of loyalty to their homeland. They still got along nicely with the Illyrians and partied down in their Palace. Finally our hunters had feasted enough in Illyria and decided to move and and visit their neighbor, the Mycenaean people. Unfortunately they weren't nearly as friendly as their last hosts and didn't welcome them, so they had to turn back. The Illyrians' other neighbors, the Macedonians, were unwelcoming as well, so it was back into the woods for our intrepid group of explorers.

Spoiler :

Elsewhere preparations were made for the foundation of a second outpost on the order of Rex Romulus III (Rex Romulus II Requiescat in pace) right on the other side of the sea of our friendly neighbors. Armed escorts were sent to ensure their safety against wild beasts and Etruscans lurking in the area.

Spoiler :

In Rome itself craftsmen developed a type of wooden container on wheels which could be pulled by animals to easily transport people over greater distances without them having to walk themselves. Now if only there were beasts strong enough to actually pull such a contraption anywhere near us! It has been tested with goats and sheep, but only marginal success.

Spoiler :

Rex Romulus III personally visited the Etruscans to negotiate open borders, but failed as their hatred for us still lingered. Only select people with explicit permission were allowed to come anywhere near Etruscan lands. They were especially agitated over our creation of an outpost near what they thought of their territory, and announced that they had a group of settlers at the ready as well to cut us off from the rest of the world. Our king still kept a calm head, and departed without diplomatic incident, though of course this meeting had reignited the flames of hatred for our neighbors in his subjects. Nothing good can come from the founding of Tarchna, and it is only a question of time until we will go to war once again...

Spoiler :

Oh and there's also this forever alone group of hunters somewhere in Iberia:

Spoiler :

One would think there's not much to change about something as simple as a wheel, but one would be wrong. Instead of just using a monolithic disk people found it was much more efficient to hollow out the inside and fill it with sticks for balance. This led to a stark increase in usage of wheels, and the establishment of the first roads to more easily drive carts around. Indeed it was planned to connect Rome and Ravenna with one continuous dirt path to facilitate commerce and trade.

Spoiler :

Under the wise rule of Rex Romulus IV (Rex Romulus III Requiescat in pace) another group of colonists departed from Rome to found a second outpost for our people and to secure a metal known as tin. Despite his father's disagreements with the Etruscans he still wanted to maintain good relations with them, and ordered carts containing various nick nacks to be constructed so that they may be sold to our neighbors, creating goodwill and wealth for both sides.

Spoiler :

However, not all seem to have such pure intentions. Our hunters who were quite impressed by the generosity of the Illyrian people happened upon a suspiciously large group of Vandal warriors headed in that direction while walking through the woods. Attempts to get any meaningful information out of them proved fruitless, but one thing was very clear: They were preparing for a war. Our expedition decided to discreetly follow their tracks just in case their target was their former host.

Spoiler :

Also people found out that salt is fricking delicious, and excellent to preserve foodstuff for long periods of time.

Spoiler :

Obligatory screenie of our lone hunter who's probably in western France by now:

Spoiler :

Also look how many techs we can research in a single turn each:

Spoiler :

In case you didn't notice, right about there was the time I started leaving Screenshots in their original size, that's why there's such a variation in size in this update.

Obligatory screenie of our lone hunter who's probably in western France by now:

Spoiler :

I don't think so, it seems to be more to the south and I don't see any river with this shape in France. I would bet for Portugal and especially the future Lisbon spot.

Let be precise :)

Anyways, thanks for the story, I like it quite much. And don't trust the Etruscans, they secretly dream to become Roman's king.

Ah, you are right, never mind. I mixed it up, seeing as I am already some 30 turns ahead of the update and currently he is in France, but at the time of that screenshot he was indeed just in Portugal.

Aw shucks.

Eh, we'll see how thing develop.

I agree, Portugal is what I think it is :)

Curiously I'm unable to see your new screenies

EDIT: BTW, I can't see the old ones neither. Maybe your ISP is blocking content to Brazil. This is a sacrilege! :D

EDIT2: I can't even see my hosted pics on imgur. I guess the internet here isn't faring well today :p

All Hail King Romulus... whatever number he is!

Great updates. Indeed, I do not trust the Etruscans! Their refusal to open borders and now their blocking us off on our little peninsula is enough for me to want to go to war with them! Let us build an army and fight them for our freedom, freedom to expand to the north and west towards the land of the Gauls!

All Hail King Romulus... whatever number he is!

To be honest the numbers I'm using here are probably not the same I'm using ingame. In the game itself I do change my name every five turns or so (about 50 years) while in the story I've only had one Romulus per update. Then again we are about two thousand years away from the birth of real life Rome, so you can cut me some slack for not being precise with my documentation. Once we are past the anno urbe condita I'll try to stick with historical records as far as applicable to the game situation. Obviously I can't use real life emperors when in the game I am running a democracy at that time.

Generations and kings passed (Rex Romulus IV - VI Requiescant in pace), when one day the people of Rome were visited from where they expected it last: The sea. It seems another people has developed ways to brace the waves, and constructed something akin to a raft, but much bigger and with walls, all made out of wood except for a big blanket span across a log which stood in the middle of this contraption. With this invention they came all the way here from a far away land and set foot in our town. Rex Romulus VII had the strangers immediately brought to his palace, so that he may learn of their origin and the adventures they no doubt experienced on their long journey. Despite initial misunderstandings due to the different language of these foreigners His Majesty became quick friends with them and hosted a feast in their honor. After a few days stay they departed again to continue in their travels, and both parties had gotten a good impression of the other. Surely the Romans shall once become good friends with this seafaring people!

Spoiler :

Inspired by this sudden influx of knowledge a wealth of new inventions was created over the following years, among them the bow and arrow, the war axe, the cultivation of wine and systematic excavation of stones. The king also ordered the construction of a dozen chariots which are to be drawn by donkeys, goats, sheep and slaves, with mixed success. Trade with our Etruscan neighbors flourished during this period.

Spoiler :

However not all is well with the world, as the worst fears of our hunters were confirmed: The Vandals indeed attacked our friends, the Illyrians. Of course they could not just sit idly by while their generous hosts were slaughtered, so they decided to battle along side them. Messengers were exchanged between Skadar and Rome and the King supported their choice, stating that that our people will stand by their side in this time of war. The Vandals, in their foolishness, let themselves be encircled in a valley by our own warriors and the city of Skadar, surrounded by all other sides by mountains and the even more impassable sea. They could not flee, but they also could not attack either the city itself our out hunters and survive it, thus they opted to fortify themselves, followed by numerous exchanges of arrows and spears on both sides.

Spoiler :

Unfortunately not all were happy with the king's rule, or even the rule of kings in general. The belief in several gods became rampant, and with it the belief that there should be several rulers as well. Revolt was in the air, and some dissidents refused to pay His Majesty their loyalty. Rex Romulus IX (RR before him RIP blabla) was still a young man when he was crowned, inexperienced and with no idea how to deal with a revolting populus. One day he went on a walk by himself in the countryside, with no guards, to get a clear head. He never told anyone what exactly happened that fateful day, except that he visited a sacred place and had a vision. He said that the gods ordered him to study the stars, which are their home, and erect an oracle in their honor, so that he and his subject may be guided on the outcome of future events. Once he returned from his break he immediately ordered those still loyal to the crown to do so, but only time will tell if once the oracle is finished law and order will indeed return to Rome...

OMG, your pics are huge. And they still have a bizarre resolution to me, but now I can read them at least.

Why is your resolution so messed up Knoedel? What's the resolution you play civ? Here I normally do either 1366x768 (on lap screen) or 1360x768 (on my monitor).

Do you find my pics in the Democratic Caliphate to have a strange resolution?

First you say they are too small and I should just leave them at their original size and put them into spoilers, and now you say they are too big? Make up your mind!

My resolution is 1024 x 768 because with everything else the various screens (tech, demographics, civics etc) don't take up all the space and that's a pet peeve of mine. Could the problem maybe be because I always play windowed mode? Because that I will definitely not change, lest tabbing between Civ4 and Paint whenever I make a screenshot (which is, like, very often in this game for obvious reasons) becomes to bothersome.

I don't know, it's been ages since I last saw any Democratic Caliphate screenshots. (subtle hint to maybe move that game along)

That explains everything. 1024x768 is terrible to see in my both screens. But why would you need to go to paint everytime you take a screenshot? I simply take all my screenshots while playing and after I'm done playing for the day, I may go to PS to change the screenies a bit (if I even have to do it, normally I let them stay as they are).

Yeah, I'm trying to progress but the end of the semester is upon us, and Numerical Analysis is a pain in the *. It's a shame that since Sanguiv left we couldn't even play a whole term

Erm, because if I take another the first one in the clipboard is overridden?

When you take screenshots while on CIV, they are always automatically saved in your Screenshots folder in My Games/Beyond the Sword/Screenshots, so you have no need to worry which one is saved in the clipboard at the moment.

Then you go to the folder and there are several .jpg waiting for you :p

...

In fact there's like a thousand screenshots waiting for me as I just found out.

Well this will certainly make things easier in the future. Still prefer windowed mode though, but the reason for that isn't yours to know just yet. *ominous foreshadowing*

But even with screenshots on windowed mode it looks 10 times better
