SGFN-08: Random AWM Succession Game

Lurkers Comment:

Instead of rushing Pentagon in Athens cant you rush a palace with an MGL

Thats possible too, but a free palace jump is more fun.

I think the pure LB Army is the best bet if its covered by a Spear army, offense beats defense here, we have adequate defense, while our offensive is not adequate.

I don't like "mixed" Armies either. Putting a spear into the LB Armie reduces its attack power while at the same time not increasing its defense too much. Better keep pure Armies and cover them with a couple spearmen. (Unfortunately we can't ship our existing Spearmen Army, but a couple of elite spears should be good enough as cover for our LB and Horsemen Armies.) Especially as I expect to meet only few Greek attack-units: they will all be on their way south towards the choke point... The occasional horseman or swordsman we will meet, can be taken care of with a simple non-army spearman.

Important: don't fill the Amries right away, because then they will "stick out" on top of the stack, because of their many hitpoints. Leave the Armies size 1 untill they reach Athens and are ready to attack. That way the plain spears will be top of the stack and absorb any attack, leaving the armies well covered while travelling through hostile territory. We may loose 2-3 spears that way, but this is still better than wasting an Army on defensive tasks. Armies are for attacking.

^ Actually Lanzelot, I support this plan also, I just never said anything, I think it is about time that we try something a little crazy ^ ;)

You can now criticize me for losing the worker stack. In my defense, I wasn't expecting them to charge with a wounded Immortal and win. I couldn't assign more troops as our trebuchets and Eindhoven were at risk, the army probably should have been assigned to defend them, but for some reason, I didn't. Uggh...

Won't it mess us up our palace jump if we put the Pentagon in Berlin.

Also Sparthage, don't kill your self over the worker stack, we all have made mistakes. ;)

Yeah, I'd suggest changing Berlin to something else. Also, I'd suggest getting some workers so that we don't lose too much time setting up the chokepoint which has been extremely bloody.

I haven't DL'd the save. Are the workers retreievable or well into enemy territory?

Sigh, we'll get them back when we wipe the last vestiges of those Persian scum off the face of the... (oops, got excited)

Nope, they disbanded them all before I could retake the mountain. Now I want to burn Persepolis to the ground. And then march the slaves that we get to the next Persian city and disband them in front of the horrified Persian people. It wouldn't do anything, but it would make me feel better.

Hey, didn't we want to set research back to 90%, after Berlin finishes its Library?!

We can't get the workers back? Oh well... But why would they disband them? Usually they do this only, if there's really no chance to get them into safety.

Hey, just put it this way: "I found a brilliant way to significiantly reduce our unit upkeep cost." :D

I tried setting research at that, but the loss of gold would have bankrupted us before we could get invention. Sorry about that. Our unit upkeep costs are killing us (27 gpt). Their disbanding of the workers has been common for me, the AI doesn't like slaves on my computer.

And by the way: now that we have 3 Armies, start the Pentagon somewhere! (We will be able to continue it, even if we loose one of our Armies in the meanwhile.)

Are you sure about this? I ask because I have had my pentagon builds flipped to something else when I've lost an army, but this might have been in PTW rather than conquests. I'd take care with the armies.

Now you are making me worried! Actually it has been a long time since I last lost an Army while building the Pentagon... May have been back in Civ3 Vanilla...

We should definitely test this before losing one of our Armies... :D
(Would be a shame to end up with a 395-shield library )

I am sure that when you start a build, you can finish it, even if the prerequisite is gone. You just MUST NOT change the build inbetween, as you cannot switch back. And you can't work with a prebuild of course.

Lurkers Comment:

Guys I would not bet on it, but I seem to have a vague memory of having lost an army and the Pentagon build auto switch on me. It would have been several years back and I am not sure what version of the game it was. I doubt that the version matters thought.

It either works that way or not and all version will be the same, I would suspect.

Although it is not my turn, I can load the save and play ahead a few turns, just to test the Pentagon theory. :)
