SGOTM 03 - Maintenance Thread

Alternatively, you can load your latest save file directly from Windows. This will automatically start CIV with the appropriate mod loaded (assuming you have the appropriate mod installed). To facilitate this, you can put a shortcut to your CIV saved game folder in an easily accessible location (ie. the desktop).

I've posted the Mid-game Spoiler thread.

Visit it when your team reaches 500 AD and you know of all your rivals - dead or alive.

Great news! Just to be clear, does "know of" mean you can see their territory, or does it mean you can talk to them? You can have the first without the second. Of course, if they are dead, there will be no talking  (and no territory to see :D ).

Thanks for the comimg clarification.

It they are still alive then you should be able to talk to them, and know where they live.

I think the dynamic in question would be, if a religion spreads to your civ, you gain contact with the civ that founded that religion but no knowledge of their location. This is quite common on archipelago maps where religion spreads far and wide over the coastlines, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen to many teams. Does this count as "knowledge" of that rival for the purpose of participation in the spoiler thread?

My concern is that, if you don't know where the other Civ lives, you may gain significant advantage by learning that earlier from another team's spoiler post. Therefore, I would say you should have found at least a part of each civ's borders, at least, before reading the spoiler thread.

Being able to talk to them, and knowing where they live, seem to me to be the two factors that will avoid the risk of gaining unfair advantage from a spoiler. Is anyone suggesting the conditions should be lower or higher than this?

I suppose this is getting slightly pedantic, but perhaps the conditions should be having met them and know where they live? There are a number of reasons why civs get huffy and don't want to talk (war for example.....)

OK, I meant that they should be on your list of contacts.

Makes perfect sense to me that to avoid gaining new knowledge, must be able to see some of cultural border of each other living civ, and be able to open a diplo screen with them (even if they won't talk).

Here is another question ... if you happen to miss the message that a civ was destroyed, is there a way to know that one or more that you can't see are dead? Some advisor screens have faces you know and sometimes a skull ... is that a reliable indicator?

if you go into your victory conditions screen(F8), it will tell you how many rivals are left before you can attain a conquest victory. Compare that number to the number of civs you have met that are not currently dead. Then you'll know if you've met everyone.

Of course! I should have thought of that. Thanks! :goodjob:

Trash Team is up to 1200ad and we know the location of every civ and have a pretty map of the world. There is one civilisation we haven't contacted yet even though they're on our maps because our caravels have been tied up with other stuff. Does this mean we can't post a spoiler?

@pigswill: The above post is a spoiler and needs to be edited out. Please don't put such information in the maintenance thread. I realize its nothing very important, but it still doesn't belong in the thread every team has to check per SGOTM Staff.

Is there really anything is pigswill's post that is not knowable by other means or not really a spoil?

Up to 1200 AD is knowable from the progress page.

If they see and have relations with every other civ, that is knowable once they post in spoiler thread, so not clear that knowing that there is one they have not met is really a spoil. If that kind of info is a spoil, then we can't really have a spoiler thread, can we?

Their map is pretty. Don't see how that spoils.

So the post seems pretty harmless to me. What do the mods think?

Looks like the intent of the spoiler thread is to have a maximum of 22 posts, one for each team? Or is comment on the posts by other teams (or lurkers) allowed?

Can the team posts be built by serial edits over time, or is one complete insertion preferred?

And are screenshots allowed (or even encouraged)?

This mod would rather worry about important issues than play at lawyers with the fine print on rules for a friendly competition :p

Methos is right - regardless of whether you consider the information is valuable or not, it's far easier, safer, and less work for everyone to just not post anything relating to your game progress outside of the team thread. Then I don't have to think about whether it's an issue or not. Simple rule, and it shouldn't affect your ability to play the game.

@ Pigswill: I repeat, I like simple rules. If you haven't met everyone yet then you don't meet the spoiler condition. What alternative spoiler condition would you suggest?

@dV: There's no limit on the number of posts per team. Any team member is allowed to post in the spoiler thread once his team has posted its summary. If you look at previous spoilers you will find that they don't include very active discussions, though. Players seem to prefer to keep their discussions within the team threads.

Why would you edit a spoiler post over time? Teams generally draft their main spoiler post in the team thread, and edit it there before copying it to the spoiler thread. Editing public posts over time is usually a bad idea, as there's no notification system for edits, so no one knows you've done it. People don't generally go back and re-read posts just in case they've been updated.

Screenshots are encouraged, as long as they don't divulge information beyond the spoiler point, of value to the other teams.

@ AlanH: So Pigswill's content was harmless, but even so, this is not the place for it. Got it!

I see your point about iterative edits. Building it in the team thread makes sense ... still trying to think through the mechanics of this, maybe upload word or text document that others can download and add to?

@all: How have teams managed the mechanics of this in previous SGOTM?

We've usually had one person write it up and post it. Then the team can see if any changes need to be made and post their thoughts. Then the original author makes any necessary changes and let's the team have a final look.

Then, its time to post it in the spoiler thread.
