SGOTM 03 - Maintenance Thread

*sorry to jump in Alan*

Guys, it is simple... You may open the save but simply put:
You may not do ANYTHING or risk Alan getting upset at you.
You can LOOK but dont touch...

Lets not try and make Alan & Co's jobs harder by doing anything else. We can all try to find the limits of what we can get away with, but in the spirit of friendly competition.... Lets keep it friendly.

Our Admins have a hard enough time setting things up and stuff.... Lets not test their "cheat finding abilities" as we all know that would make for the Admins to:
1) Have to invest MUCHO more time
2) Make it WAY less fun (if it isnt much more like work allready)
3) Take the fun out of it for all concerned.

So lets keep it simple, you can Look but dont touch!
And if you think you cannot stand the strain... Make a copy of the game in world builder to the best of your abilities and go crazy :crazyeye:

:goodjob: to the Admin team!

@namliaM: Thanks very much. You express the simple facts very clearly, and your sympathy for the Staff's plight is much appreciated .

To appeal to the more base instincts of some of our players, I would also offer another way to look at it:

If you want a challenge, you can either expend your efforts on looking for ways to fool me, which is probably a very low target to aim for; or you can try to improve your Civ skills to beat the AI and the opposition. I know which I would consider a more worthwhile achievement :mischief:

The Staff gets its pleasure out of seeing people get better at Civ4. To quote the old Beatles title :old: ... "Please please me" :)

So, if I want to dotmap and want to take a screenshot with the grids and all that nice stuff, i should download, open it, take my screenshot and
a) Upload?
b) Just delete the save i downloaded?

Either way, all i do is open, change the visual settings (i assume this allowed- things like turning on the grids, special bonus terrain indicator things) and not move anything. I got that part.

This was already confirmed OK when I asked the question earlier.

Which one (delete or re-upload)? I assume you mean its cool to look at it and then delete it. So i will play with it (not move anything or give orders though) then delete it, not re-upload it.

I.

No point in re-uploading it as you haven't changed anything. :) Delete it if you want but it's probably better to keep the save in case you want to refer to it again. That's what I do

Delete or archive any save you download. Make any reversible change to it that you like to review it, record it, or take snapshots of it.

Just don't play it.

[PS] Only the current player should upload a new file. As Sam Yeager says, if you are not the current player then you should not have played the file, so there's no point in uploading it - it's still the same file!. If you've changed the file then you have broken the above rule.

On a related subject, please note this new thread in the main GOTM forum.

This should come as no surprise to players here, who will all have read and understood the rules of the competiton, but I'll repeat it anyway.

Reloading to change outcomes is forbidden in SGOTM just as it is in the GOTM competitions, and we will act to eliminate it.

To change the subject:

The HOF .008 mod displayed the turn year with a turn number/count, and the option to set 4000 BC to be turn 0 or turn 1 (which let to my transient obsession about making it 1 against all tradition :wallbash: ... I've given that one up  )

HOF .009 now does not display a turn number/count (at least on my machine), and there is no mention of an option to set one. Did they remove this from 009, or is something wrong on my machine?

(Or did AlanH have them make a version with that feature removed just for me, to keep me out of trouble   )

I kind of miss the turncount in SGOTM, as that would be the simple way for me to know when my turnset is done. And I promise, I would make 4000 BC be turn 0 :D

The original game (.09 version of HOF) also has a turn number/count. I found it buried on one of the HOF screens after taking the scroll bar to the bottom of the screen.

Yes. You do have to scroll some of the options screens, particularly if you are not using one of the large screen systems that seem to be favoured by the developers :p

@AlanH etc. Have you considered using dashed lines or something similar for some of the teams on the progress graphs to make them easier to distinguish.

One thought that occurred to me is if you did that (or something similar to distinguish lines) for either all the Warlords teams or all the vanilla teams, it'd make it possible to use the graphs to see how the Warlords game compares to the Vanilla game - something we can't easily do right now. It'd be fascinating to see eg. whether by 500ADish, Warlords is causing significant differences in score or power levels.

Yeah, I've got nothing much else to do right now

I really can't see how making dotted lines or whatever is going to clarify that mess of lines. Also, at this early stage, you can only really compare numbers where teams have posted saves at the same date. If you display the list of posted saves you will see just how consistent the teams have been with their posted dates! I recommend that you use the team checkboxes to select a few specific team graphs that look interesting, choose the parameter to watch, then bookmark that url so that you can track that subset as the game progresses.

Is that ... like ... before Beethoven?

::glyph of Frankcor grinning, ducking, running like heck::

No, they're different mods. This SGOTM was started in hof mod 2.08.002, so all the saves will be in that same mod, and will only be openable with that mod.

You can download and install as many of the mods as there are. When I start Warlords (or CIV4), I go straight to the 'Load a Game' option; when you pick the save to load it will automatically pick the correct mod and ask if you want it loaded. Simpler to do it this way than to load the right mod from the start.
