SGOTM 04 - Geezers

Had a look at the save. I do not see much use in taking back those cities. It seems they do ok for Gandhi by now and he will pillage everything once we take the cities back. It would be quite difficult to prevent this. His cavs can step on a tile and pillage before we could kill them. He now is no. 2 in land. If he gets his pop going maybe he will be able to build apollo before Hannibal leaves this planet.:crazyeye:
 
I agree with mark that there is no real benefit in retaking Sanchu & Uppsala. We won't particularly gain from it.

What I would like to see is Scotland Yard being built. :gripe: I've already suggested using our GE to build it. I would still prefer to see it in Vienne rather Bibracte though. Once we have that we could then try using the spies to pillage both Izzy and Ghandhi's horses. Possibly also Izzy iron. Our Izzy spy can also scout Izzy cities for us so that when we're ready to invade we know the best spots to take. The third spy should head down to Hanny's land to find out where he's building his space stuff.

Looking the save I do wonder where all those infantry in the new lands came from. We must have had a lot finish building recently. I would be inclined to continue stockpiling military in both our lands rather than going on a pillaging run with them.
 
I do not agree with the reasoning for not taking Sanchu and Uppsala but will yield to the advise. But those cavs are going to be a problem for us.

IBT: Crap. Izzy's Destroyer kill one of 2 gallions carrying the GG. As expected the most powerfull gallion defended but lost.

1840 AD(Turn 450) Infantryman die attacking the Cav. Spy move toward Spanish terratory. See that Santiago is defended by a machine gunner and 2 Infantrymen. Should not be hard to take. A Viking cav finishes off the Spanish cav.


I am stopping here. There are 3 indian cavs and a cannon waiting to come and attack New Sarai. So some troop relocation is needed. Hanny built several SS parts. He is heading to the stars.

Looking back I think it was a big strategic mistake going for Brennus. We should have started going to the other continent through Tiflis in the SW. We would have had a quite secure and fast reinforcement route. Anyhow let's see what will happen.

I do not agree with the reasoning for not taking Sanchu and Uppsala but will yield to the advise. But those cavs are going to be a problem for us.

@Htadus - Believe me I can understand your frustration with Ghandhi. However I still feel attacking him was not in our interests. Bad luck with the GG. :( Casualties of war and all that. ;) I'm slightly puzzled as to why the Izzy spy is not still scouting in Izzy's lands. :confused:

Interesting point. I think we have to remember that at the time IIRC Hanny had grens as compared to our UU. Equally one of the reasons for going for Brennus was that nobody liked him.

To an extent I think you're correct. However I wonder if you're asking the right question. Our philosophy was to to do our best to help Ghandhi by giving him some decent lands. To that end we decided to give up our lands and move elsewhere. The idea being that this would help his research. Perhaps instead we should have taken the view that the best way to make sure that Ghandhi won the space race was to wipe out/weaken any competitors. I strongly suspect that's the view that some of the other teams either started with or have now switched towards.

Had we taken that view then we would have vigorously defended our lands, teched for military and astronomy and attacked the other AI and made more room in which Ghandhi could expand. In which case the idea of attacking Hanny early makes far more sense, although taking out Khan took longer than expected. The downside is that Ghandhi might not have reached space that early and we might well have lost to other teams. With the benefit of hindsight I suspect the ploy of knocking out the opposition was probably the better idea. That said, our initial idea certainly sounded good. I certainly never expected Ghandhi to be so aggressive in attacking us at the expense of his research. :( Side effect of permanent war or tweaking of the game by Gyathaar. :dunno: Hey ho, this is how we learn. ;)

However what's done is done. The-Hawk posted some suggestions earlier as to what we might do but there was very little discussion of them. :shrugs shoulders: Given our situation I think we really need to hang onto our southern cities otherwise our research goes down the pan which we can't afford if we want to survive.

Therefore I think we need to look at seriously weakening/eliminating Izzy whilst fending off Ghandhi. One city will not be enough. To that end, whilst selective pillaging with spies may help us, we need to build up a force capable of taking most, if not all, of Izzy cities. Given Hanny's strength I don't think it is realistic for us to attack him (although maybe we can pillage some of his resources?). We will need to encourage Mehmed to do it. Although I have to admit that quite how we manage to accomplish that is problematic.

Ages ago there used to be a program on TV called Dad's Army. A favourite saying of one of the characters was 'We're all doomed!'. That's somewhat how I feel whilst looking at Izzy's 'light' defence. :(

We might as well use the GS to part research Electricity. It's disappointing to see that Ghandhi's science hasn't moved on at all. :( Seems like Ghandhi is more interested in inflicting death by a thousand cuts on ourselves than research.

The GS would save about 28% of the costs for elictricity. In my single player games I would make him a specialist in a science town, but here it might be worth to use him on electricity as we do not have an appropriate city for him as a specialist.

I forgot to mention that there is a settler on the way to the Gergovia spot. Luckily Hanny used a spot in the very South of the corner, so we can still build a city in the North. We may get Hanny's city by culture. Should be possible.

We still have a great prophet too... we should decide where and settle it somewhere. Would add some production as well as extra science and gold. Seems a waste to just leave it sitting there. If no one says otherwise, I'll join it to capital.

Just found this guy... the old site is going to be illegal for new city as it is only 2 spaces away from Hannibal's new city. We could settle on the cottage one east of the old city which is what the blue circle gods have decreed.

The settler doesn't have an escort... wouldn't we be just tempting Hannibal to declare on us if we put an empty city right next to him? He has the troops to take it sitting right there. Looking around I'm not sure where to steal the troops to garrison this as we are pretty thin... maybe we should wait to settle it? It will give us an extra city for upkeep as well. Only advantage I can see to settle fast would be that we'll have a better shot at the culture war with Hannibal's new city.

Hmmm..... Normally I would be inclined to agree but in this case I think it would be better to use the GS help partially research Electricity for the following reasons:

  • We're way behind everyone, except Ghandhi :cry: , on the tech front.
  • Academies tend to come into their own in the long term and our need is short term.
  • Ghandhi hasn't done much with all those nice cities and cottages we gifted him so I can't see him doing much with additional resources anyway.

EDIT: I think you're right to avoid settling another city. Ghandhi's likely to come along and just raze it anyway.

EDIT 2: I suspect Ghandhi will target Isca next.

Great Scientist lightbulbs 2,758/10,090 toward electricity saving 4 turns at 50% research (14 to 10 turns).

Great Prophet joins Bibracte adding 2 hammers, 5 gold, and 3 beakers per turn to the city which actually somehow equals 10 additional gold per turn to our economy.

We have no unhappiness that I can find so I change culture from 20% to 10% and up science to 60% (electricity in 9 now). That went so well that I try culture at 0% and we still have no unhappiness. We are close in some cities though so may not be able to keep it at 0 whole turn but I'll let gold build up a little bit while I can get away with it in case we need to upgrade some units (+99gpt now at 60% research).

Laugh for a while because I got all excited at finding two Infantry in Camulodunum which were going to reinforce Isca until I realize that they are Mehmed's.

Due to Sam's premonition (which I think is likely) Isca drafts an Infantry unit.
New Karakorum also drafts since it has 5 unhealthy and I can do it without losing good worked tiles.

This game feels like it has been on a knife edge for many years now. Although I can't believe it's almost my turn again. I'm still getting over that last turnset. Nice work so far though Jenarie.
 
@Jenarie - Congrats on the economic changes. :goodjob: Presumably some of the unhappiness from the drafting has worn off.

Military - Now that's Ghandhi's proved me wrong on his target you can probably move the inf from Isca to Bibracte for the time being. Either two or three inf from Bibracte can move to Vienne as reinforcement. I seem to remeber needing at least one inf to take out one cav.

An inf and cannon can move from both Camulodunum and Birka to Bagacum as the defence there is looking pretty threadbare. Perhaps also move the cav from Birka? You have grens in Bagacum, Bibracte, Birka and Durnovaria of which you could promote a couple to inf this turn. Remember you can't move a unit on the turn it's been upgraded.

Thankfully it looks as though Izzy has been giving her inf defence bonuses. Just pray she doesn't send all those arty in Seville in your direction at once. :eek:

I don't know if spies can pillage improvements like rail and road. If so, then it might be worth pillaging the transport network on the coal hill to the SW of Bagacum. I believe spies can enter cities so it might be worth finding out what Izzy's up to. I don't know if you have to pay for that though.

That 1 Indian Cavalry turned out to be a stack of 3 but they are dead now. Did lose an infantry on the deal though. :(

9) Turn 469 - 1859 AD

Electricity finishes. Start Railroad which at 70% will be done in 9. Electricity gave us enough extra gpt to move to 70% research and still be positive 32gpt.

Spy gets to the railroad but apparently she can only sabatoge improvements other than road/rails. I've never played with spys before... wonder what else she can do... I'll leave her movement open next turn so Harbourboy can decide what mischief she should get into next. :)

10) Turn 470 - 1860 AD

We can take this out the SAM with garrison from Bagacum with no problem but it would leave it a little weak. I have one infantry on the way there which can arrive next turn to reinforce.

I haven't drafted for quite a while so that option is wide open to you as well if/when needed.

My goal for this turnset was to get our power rating up which I did not accomplish at all. We built troops but we also used a lot of troops chasing off pillagers. We may need to draft more but I hated to use population that was working good tiles so tried to keep it to a minimum... but Gandhi is sending troops as fast as we can build troops to kill them and with Izzy added in I think another round or two of drafting is most likely in order. I was sorta hoping if we get our power rating up a bit Izzy might talk peace although that might be a long shot.
