SGOTM 12 Maintenance Thread

Certainly with many global teams it is tough to get everyone online at the same time.

Everybody online at the same time? You can't seriously consider that -what - do you all live in the same town? I haven't observed more than three XTeam people online at the same time ever.

I don't think you get any member of XTeam at all who will complain about an extension.

Last time there was a space race in SGOTM 9, it was quick speed with a bunch of free techs that sped up the pace.
Now its normal speed with several factors that slows down the pace instead.

Of course it is possible to complete in the normal time frame, but it will probably make the game terribly rushed for most teams. I'd really hate if simple lack of time will destroy the quality of play.

The Unusual Suspects team supports the extension.

On a personal note, while I think that most teams would be able to press and finish in time, what's the point? This is a game after all, something that you do for fun. Enjoyable playing experience is most important, rather than the game being one more stress factor for the upcoming holidays. ;) I was thinking 1 more month, that seems reasonable to me.

I get the impression that there's a significant majority in favour of a one month extension.

I have therefore changed the end date to January 20, 2011. I have altered the first post in this thread, but not those in your individual team threads.

Thanks, AlanH!

ChokoMisfits are happy to hear about the extension. :) While we could (probably) finish by the original date, it would certainly require accelerated and less precise play. As Yamps posted, an enjoyable playing experience is important and the extension will reduce the stress of pushing for the deadline.

Excellent! Thanks, Alan. OSS is certainly happy to hear about this. :)

On a more personal note, I hope this doesn't put at a competitive disadvantage those teams that have more faithfully stuck to the original schedule than some of us. An unconventional game like this does require very extensive forethought and play-testing in the opening stages, which obviously comes at the cost of a more rushed endgame when needing to meet a deadline. I would have preferred a full consensus among all teams for this reason, but a near absolute majority should rule, I suppose.

Yeah the extension is a good idea, that being said what are the odds of all teams actually completing their games before the end of November? I'd say pretty high now with the extension given.

Of course it does. In my opinion, changing the final submission date should have been done at most 1 month after the start of the game or not at all.

Some teams have clearly been accelerating their play style in the last month while the slow-goers might have just gained a big advantage by being given that much more time to test.

Not that I'm complaining. We'll finish when we finish :)

My point was exactly the opposite to that. Every single player we have seems to live in a different country or time zone. Amazing really.

Thank you to Alan for listening to my request. I am glad of the extra month as we would hate to have to rush through the remainder of our game in a month.

The extension is welcome, thanks Alan.

For the few complaints, i've never seen a top team eliminated for being late.

And FE have always completed on time.

Interesting. I wouldn't have thought so, but thanks for the spoiler info.

Everybody sees the submissions of everybody with the dates.

For example, it's no secret that your team submitted its first save on September 25th and then took 5 days (Sept. 30th) to decide to play the next set of 15 turns.

:p

And, that was a very eventful 15t...

It's entirely possible that they played those turns over the course of the 5 days, discussing issues as they went along, rather than all at once at the end of the fifth day.

'Nuff spam!

I really don't want to post here, since it has nothing to do with this topic... and I couldn't figure out how to PM you for the life of me.

I was wondering which Succession GOTM (or other) you'd recommend a completely new player to the civilization genre to read throughly (I recently bought Civ 4: Complete Edition). I asked my friend and he flat out told me "Murky Waters 6-8" - I'm just wanting to figure out a place to start.. and I'm sure i'll go from there (expanding to other succession/gotm's)

Once again, I'm sorry for posting here... you can banish me after you respond :)

Hi, welcome :wavey:

First, if you click on my user name in the panel left of my posts you should get a menu. The second item in that menu is "Send a private message to AlanH". That should do it.

I can't offer any expert suggestions, as I don't play Civ4. Murky Waters were certainly very strong players, but the threads of any of the teams playing the current or recent games are worth reading. I'm sure they all discuss real insights into the games. If you want to go further back in time, make sure you set the options for forum display to the full range of dates, as the default is only one year and just covers the last couple of games
