Oh... and is this the right time/place to say "I told you so" ?

With your post-game knowledge:

Do you think any non-militaristic victory condition could have won gold here?

I think if you played the militant, you might have been lucky and find an opportunity to nab an AP victory along the way, saving a handful of turns in the final conquest. But the military strategy was the only way to go, even if the diplo end-game might could have been possible.

Basically, beat down the Monarch AI with military power first, and every VC gets faster.

Pretty fun game, with a lot of things going on for the members in our group. We definitely overestimated how hard it would be to self tech in Monarch level, and let off the gas with conquest way too early. By the time I got my second turn set, I was pretty shocked to just see how far away our economy was from crashing.

So, I teched RR in 1230 AD in my own "real game" trial. Anyone want to place bets on the winning date for this competition? I figure the teams can beat me by at least 20 turns, but getting to RR is not the bottleneck in my game, so I'm going to take 1080 AD.

Wow! PR was already miles ahead of us. I wonder what went wrong. They could have conquered at least half the world with chariots.

No way. With post-game knowledge, this game could have been won by conquest (with Orient Express) probably around T105. SG10 was a game in which post-game knowledge and even re-playing with unlimited reloads wouldn't change the final result more than a turn or two. Not this one.

Of course, that's part of the mystique of SGs.

Sure, Religious Leader Diplomatic Victory could have won gold. Just need to spread the religion to all remaining Civs, plan to build The Apostolic Palace 10t before Orient Express is completed with a vassal that votes for you. Espionage can even be used to flip Civs into or out of the TAP religion as desired.

Of course, the beginning strategy must conquer as many good cities as possible to achieve a research rate and barely supportive economy to get to Railroad ASAP.

there is a 6 turn difference. 6 turns is a lot on normal speed.
Okay, I'll use our T55 save and assume that the test save accurately portrays their situation.

You're right. We suddenly have 3 workers, a third city (CEB) and another settler on the way. Plus!!!! They have only just finished Alpha on T55, we're 187 fb into HBR! They seem to have more b-bpt, so they must have teched too much. Oh yeah, they teched Fishing, for one. Hm...

Did you like the semi-earth map?

Yes, that was nice to have a general idea of who was where, who was in the game and England being an island, etc.

The funny thing is, after we got far enough into the game to figure out it was europe, I had an image in my mind of mostly europe and part of asia. I don't know why I never pictured it going as far as the Pacific Ocean or Australia. No one on Turbo Ants ever brought up that idea, cus if we had, we would have built galleys in India! And sent some to the north too. We had no plan for an island in Australia or anywhere in the arctic (other than Churchill's one island). Could have been an embarrassing disaster. Very short sighted of us.

There was one detail that bothered me though I never mentioned it and that was not exploring all corners of Sal, Gandhi, Mao, and KK. That always goes against my grain. Call me paranoid. Overall we explored pretty well, though, except for getting trapped at Gandhi.
