SGOTM 23 - Lurker thread

Well done TA. Soundly beat us by the looks of things. :goodjob:
Congrats to the other teams too.

So strategy should of been. Settle capital, tech Ah and settle horse. We teched AH but didn't settle the horse. Waiting for border pops and HBR. Basics on Monarch never hurt. Especially when you have viewed all the demo screens for first 30 turns. Settling on the horse in inner ring now seems a no brainer. Then you get chariots much quicker.

So frustrating to see Mylene in lurker thread instead of our thread where she belongs!!! A true Phoenix really.

Did US miss a road near Novograd?? Only 1 worker nearby. :(

I wonder how many teams got caught out by fact AI cities only have railroad if they have the tech? I spotted this on final few turns.

Are members of SGTOM teams whose completion of the SGOTM has been acknowledged by a SGOTM official allowed to read other team threads and post in other team threads that have likewise completed the SGTOM? That has been typical of many past SGOTMs. Or is posting restricted to this thread?

Rule has always been not to post in threads where teams have not finished. No reason not to post in teams threads where game is complete. I think as we have a lurker thread now they like teams to use this. That is what it is there for. :)

That would have caught us by surprise, but we luckily didn't go thru our vassal. (we didn't have a vassal until the last turn.)
We likely would have been disqualified because we didn't have any RR tiles done until after the Conquest victory msg!
No way to gift tech all in one turn. Ouch. game over.

yes, reload all you want. I don't know that I even care if you manage to conquer everyone. I want to see T104 Railroad.

Are you sure about that? With new random seed on reload, LC could win EVERY battle if he had enough patience to reload after every loss. 3 warriors up against a city with 3 archers? No problem. Just reload until each battle is won. Maybe LC could even win the entire game with just warriors.

But you're right, the bottle neck would still be getting RR by T104...

Okay, I'll use our T55 save and assume that the test save accurately portrays their situation.

You're right. We suddenly have 3 workers, a third city (CEB) and another settler on the way. Plus!!!! They have only just finished Alpha on T55, we're 187 fb into HBR! They seem to have more b-bpt, so they must have teched too much. Oh yeah, they teched Fishing, for one. Hm...

If I'm not mistaken, CEB could have been settled several turns sooner too. That settler took a walk about and ended up coming back closer to home once we found where the horses were.

Fyi, when I checked the rrs on T125, before you had capped Stalin, I checked every tile, including every city tile. We would have spotted it in time. ;) But yes, it would have caught us by surprise.

That's not why I want reloads. Just the opposite. I want them for stupid mistakes like misclicks and for strategy reruns, so I don't have to start from scratch each time. We had lots of bad luck in our game but I don't think it cost us any turns. But screwimg up Hatty's Philosophy bulb, that might have cost us a turn.

Now, in case you feel like reloading 10,000 times to get 3 warriors to beat 3 archers, have at it.

Thanks, Gumbolt. Well played by you folks, too. I thought you had us throughout the game until near the end. Especially when your culture graph exploded some ten turns before ours. Seemed like you were way ahead of us on teching. I think maybe you actually were.

Congrats Ants! T125 railroad is very impressive! I guess the important lesson here is that infra really isn't needed.

I don't think we can have been very far ahead of you in tech at any point. Did last 9 techs in 10 turns and you still beat us to railroad by 7 turns. Okay, we teched unnecessary stuff as well, like to cuirs. Realised too late just how fast we'd have RR and had to do something to get conquest even remotely around the same time.

Did you guys capture GLH early?

uploaded.

Maybe the flatline in PR's power is because they disbanded a bunch of units (to save $$) Maybe conquest was virtually done. If so, I want to read how they accomplished that. I thought we're going as fast as can be expected. I think we had some huge early setbacks. That costs way more turns than bad luck now.

What were these big set backs?? Nice to know we at least kept you on your toes. We had loads of set backs. Someone kept asking me to play turnsets.

Truly amazing results by TA and PR! :goodjob:

Expected to be beaten by the odd 20 or 30 turns, so being smacked by 50 to 60 turns is really impressive! And depressing. :mischief:;)

No, the tile 2S1E of it is railroaded. :) Also, I guess you still must be looking at the 1180 save rather than the last one (1230), although I think 1180 the RR was completed already.

Thanks for the nice scenario BSP. Maybe the level should indeed have been at least emperor or immortal, this time the monarch AIs were pushed over a lot easier than in the previous game.

IIRC, we had several high odds losses at the onset of conquest. We had them later too, like everyone, but losing a lot on your first couple cities really sets you back cus it's such a snowball effect.
I probably exaggerated with the word 'huge' setback.

You're used to the squiggly brown roads we see most all game long and may be confusing the black roads of the industrial age with the silver Railroads, but I agree, if we had been planning a RR thru a vassal, I'm sure someone Pollina would have figured that out in time.

Nope. I'm not even talking about the pictures. I checked the words in the lower-left corner for each tile and in our cities, on T125, city tiles read: "Railroad," whereas between cities it reads:
"Road.
{coords}
Build a Railroad: 1 Turn."
