Share Your First BNW Experiences Here

I'm starting archipelago to (1) test the naval warfare in BNW and (2) see how effective the Exploration tree is. Also curious how the sea trade routes will fare on a water heavy map

I don't know which civ I'm choosing yet, but this time I'm self-selecting because I want strong naval civs:

-Byzantium
-Carthage
-Denmark
-England
-Indonesia
-Korea
-Netherlands
-Ottomans
-Polynesia (AI was awful at selecting the best moai culture chains that didn't sacrifice production/food in G&K. Sometimes they didn't even build moai where they should have. Not inclined to believe that would change in BNW but we'll see)
-Portugal
-Songhai (not really an out-and-out water civ but I wanted 12 civs to fit the larger map and Songhai units all get War Canoe/Amphibious)
-Venice

Not sure what civ I'll go for just yet, feel free to suggest

Hey, aren't you supposed to be playing Indonesia since you wanted them so badly in the game? ;)

My choice would be Carthage if you want to have a naval-centric game.

I didn't realize that the Cultural Great Person numbers were independent of the scientist/engineers. I went into the industrial before I built a guild and assigned a specialist on a whim.

Next game things will be different!

Also, I might be mistaken, but it feels like the tech pace has been significantly slowed down.

Just finished a game as Poland. I was going for a space victory, but along the way I wanted to test out all the new culture and tourism stuff, and ended up accidentally winning by culture four turns before I could launch my spaceship. I had a ton of horses which made the Ducal Stables extra powerful!

Found you can download early - do it directly from Steam... was supposed to be released today at 1:00 PST, but for the heck of it, I purchased it last night 12:30 am EST (about 10 hours before the official release)

Have to wait for the download - Steam has very slow servers (I am runing very fast internet upload / download speeds and man is it slow to download) (so about 25 minutes to download)

Then you have to wait for 42+ configurations (about 35 minutes) - I am running a quad pentium with high speed processor and it take a long while.

Then you have to wait when you run for it to update the data (about another 35 minute wait)

Nice green borders everything is very sharp -- so far the G&K mods work

Graphics seem faster - have not figured out what to do with the great artists

No idea how the new trade routes work - set up a bunch between different AI's but nothing dramatic seems to happen - same with routes between my cities (guess something new to figureout

OK now the great artist - have to figure out what city needs what building to plug the art / writing / music into -- no clear reference that I can find.

Have not seen anything really dramatic with much of the Civ -- waiting for something to jump out and excite me........

Need a new icon for Civ Fan Center - BNW

Played for 10 hours straight from 12:30 AM EST until near 11 AM EST

I have several Themed collections in Berlin and Cologne and a decent collection of Wonders but Shoshone, due to contributing the most during the Olympics tripled my tourism, the game is a lot more fun than it has been for me in recent memory. I was almost ready to give it up.

How does theming culture work broadly. I fiddled with trading art and artifects at 3 am last night and read the help file, but really it wasn't very helpful...

I should Google I guess.

Is the social policy from the oracle still "free" ie you pick it and your culture costs for the next policy do not go up?

What about free Great Persons? are they still 'unfree' ie they increase your cost of the next Great person?

Hehe I played them last night as my first civ. It was fun and I'll play them again when I properly understand the mechanics, but I want to see how the AI fare with them

I was actually deciding between Carthage and Portugal

F12 is the default Steam screenshot key. All games in Steam can be screenshot using F12 if you didn't change it. Firaxis went ahead and decided to put their quickload button on F12 too. This is a stupid mistake. It's soon gonna be 3 years since release and they can't be bothered apparently.

I personally switched my default Steam screenshot key to a rarely used mouse button I have. Now I can take screenshots more quickly in action games.

I'm still mad after all these years they changed from g to m for the move/go key. I've learned the new key, but then I tried playing Alpha Centauri again a couple months ago and I had to relearn the old key...

just finished my first game. I played as Morocco. I won the game through a cultural victory but i dont know how lol. i need to go and read up on how to use all the new features to their best advantage.
Some good points: love the new civ choices. The trading caravans are a nice addition and im really enjoying the archeology feature. will have a rest for a few hours and then hit a new game tonight, maybe this time as Indonesia. :)

* It also seems to be loading a lot quicker and the turns are taking less time.

Having played a couple games now, I have to say that culture victory is way too easy. Can't even get close to the end of the tech tree before my tourism owns everyone else.

Things I've noticed so far:

- Political treatises seem a little on the weak side... I wish they gave a bit more culture than what I'm seeing.

I think it works like GE and GS, the amount of culture it gives you is the sum whatever you made in previous turns or something like that.

The game loads much quicker.

This. (started with most recent patch)

What I have noticed though, is that I love the Shoshone (I knew I would when they were announced), except for their color.

That neon/nuclear cyan makes my eyes bleed. :scan:

I haven't played enough of the game to be able to make significant observations yet, but I'm subbing this thread so that I can come back to it when I do.
P.S. For a second, I thought that Jon the Bastard was JonTron. :(

Shaka is a warmongerer, I have played a couple games with all of the brave new world civs, he has been attacking everyone on his continent in both games.

Everything is SO SLOWED DOWN.

Lack of lux/strats for gold unless friends meaning GPT only (if they even have any).

Lack of gold by rivers makes this even worse.

Gone are the early days of rush-buying stuff unless you can become friends with a bunch of civs (pangea maps and meeting everyone faster is a huge advantage vs. continents, etc).
It's like MP was (less gold), but even worse...

And even more disturbing, unhappiness of ANY level (-1 and below) hurts your attack damage and production.
-1 unhappy = 2% reduction in attacks/production
-5 unhappy = 10%
-10 unhappy = 20%
Etc.

This makes it ridiculously imperative to stay happy, as becomes very costly to keep warring, and settling new cities while unhappy means your existing cities are not going to produce as quickly.

I'm only at t116 in my game, but wow, so far, things definitely feel like they are way slowed down.

One massive thing I noticed. You keep Ai culture buildings on conquest. Just took over Harun and I not only got all his GW but even those buildings that had GW in them. It maybe a bug since I lost all the monuments. Still I have museums and amphitheaters in his cities.

You can get a crazy amount of culture if you do the right policies, resolutions, tenets and beliefs. I'm sticking with Aesthetics, just so useful. Good wonder culture, boosted GWAM, and quick built culture.

I believe Gardens, National Epic, Leaning tower etc, have been buffed. With all those separate GWAM counters costs don't spiral out of control as much. You get more great people and boosting production is more worthwhile.

Also, I might be mistaken, but it feels like the tech pace has been significantly slowed down.

Make sure you spread those guilds out among your cities.

And no, you're not the only one who has had the notion that the game's pacing has been slowed down. I would definitely agree with that assertion. It might seem faster to some because you're constantly doing stuff now, but when I look at the time that's passed when I play BNW versus how far along I'd be in G&K in the same time span... man, I was miles ahead in G&K.
