In regards the 11 year old mother-

shouldn't her mother be at all responsible for her smoking, drinking, sexing all underage?

Has anyone claimed otherwise?

I don't think anyone doubts that her irresponsibility partly led to the problems.

This is similar to the thread I just made about the diet-crime link.

Personally, I think that parents should be responsible for the actions of their kids, but I don't know quite how to do it.

No, but why is there nothing we that can be done other than chastisement? Why cant we force parents to be more responsible with fines etc?

In this case I would say a mother proud of her 12 year old child getting knocked up is pretty strong evidence of poor parenting/educating the child. Although at 12 I had enough sense to avoid impregnating anyone but as the mother also gave birth at 12... it's pretty much just an ugly cycle.

As well, going on the record of being ashamed of the pregnancy will have long-term consequences on the baby.

A child should not find out that his parents/grandparents were ashamed of his creation. Maybe when he's older, he'll figure out that it was unwise. But a child should always feel wanted, even if he's unexpected.

I can understand not wanting to project an image of shame; however, it seems to me there's a difference in being supportive versus positively glowing and thrilled about the situation.

The "shaming" will be done by society-at-large/court of public opinion. Sure we can drop a footnote regarding cultural relativism but in the end society has generally accepted the idea that it's not a good idea to be having children at such a young age. And yes, at one time society thought it was a good idea to own slaves so one could always argue we are as of yet unenlightened when it comes to juvenile pregnancy.

:coffee: You all know my view, both the mother and the daughter should be imprisoned :coffee:

Yes, parents should be responsible for their children, children can teach themselves, but they need an adult to teach them well. That's why there are so many problems with Western society today.

There are always problems, it just seems very apparent nowadays that new problems have popped up that didn't seem to be there before.

But problems have also disappeared! Much bigger problems! Like, oh, slavery, starvation, black plague, feodalism, child mortality, child labour... But maybe for you these were "The good old days" :)

ROFL! Yes because life was sooooo much better in the 1650s!

Indeed, at that time, girls at 12 were usually already married.

There's an idea! Let's fine the people who end up having to care for the child.

You don't seriously hold that view, do you?

Like what? Kids having babies before they were responsible enough to take care of them? Happened all the time!

The age before having children has been steadily increasing, not decreasing!

(Of course, to be fair, raising a kid in today's evironment probobly requires a lot more responsibility)

I believe that parents should be more responsible of their children's actions and ensure that they are disaplined enough so they dont go running around like barbarians.

Yep no Civ player likes barbarians :)

As perfection said I'm sure we'd all like punishment for the wrongdoers, but after a little reflection we might see that it won't work.

So what about rewarding those that don't produce 'bad' children, or reward the children themselves?

I have reservations about this too. So it looks like we're stuck with social decline.
