He is depicted weak ,old and close to his final days when the plague killed him.His helmet is completely wrong. It has no openings for the mouth and nose and it generally looks like it is sculptured from marble. In his marble bust he also has a shorter beard.Pericles symbolized both a great elected politician and a general. It is told that there was a statue in the Acropolis of Athens where he was holding a spear.
They could make his beard brown/black and give him some muscles in his arms or they could remove that mailbag and give him a proper looking corinthian helmet.Cast your vote about the inaccurate portrayal of Pericles.

A poll is missing.
And how do we know his beard is inaccurate? Some people turn grey in their twenties.

To be honest, I think he look just fine. And I think there's already a complain-thread about him.
Edit: Here: Pericles has a wrong helmet...

this exactly. My poll vote would be "no" :p

And it's a bit biased to start the thread with

And for having your point underlined maybe you should post pictures from the game and why you obviously think it's an inaccurate portrait... :D

You are right we don't but imo he should be depicted younger and not in his final days when the plague killed him.

I don't think they should change it.

1) Pericles was not just a young general. His career extended until he was an elder statesman, so the gray beard is consistent.

2) I liked his appearance in Civ 4, but they should not be obligated to duplicate it. Victoria isn't portrayed the same as she was in 4.

3) Firaxis is not beholden to a bunch of prickish pedants.

If people want there to be a gap in his helm where his mouth should be I'd be okay with that but I think his model is fine.

Only leader I'd really like a change to is Barbarossa because he's basically the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. He needs some added color such as a cloth sigil or a longer beard or chainmail with variations in the metal colors. Anything but the Iron Giant we have currently

I'm pretty sure all of the depictions of him show him as having a white beard with a white helmet on marble-white skin. ;)

Very one-sided OP and yet look at that beautiful polling result on the one website where you'd think people would care.

Sick burn. :D

It's so peculiar how much people are complaining about Pericles, when he's hardly the only leader in the game with an unorthodox or somewhat inaccurate portrayal. Where's the poll to get rid of Monty's feathers ? Or Harald's leather armbands?

My only "complaint" about the character is that the helmet looks kind of strange with the rest of what they did with the model. I know that the helmeted bust is where they got their starting point but it seems to not fit now. Still, I think the animation looks pretty good, and it doesn't bother me at all that it's showing him as "old guy."

I never said they should duplicate his appearance from civ 4 or that they are obligated to do so but some things are very inaccurate(helmet,'mailbag'..etc) for no reason(they did the same with barbarosa(plate armor) and harald(scale armor)).Am I a 'prickish pedant' because I don't like his appearance? Thanks for your kind words

Just not worth worrying about when all of the leaders are basically caricatures anyway.

They obviously just wanted to change up his depiction by aging him. They've done the same thing (changed the age in the depiction) with others. Victoria, Catherine the Great, Pedro II etc. I have a solid feeling Maria Theresa may show up as a young woman down the road.

The helmet...I guess they could draw a solid black line down the middle so it matches the busts? Whatever...

Pedant -

So yes, pedant is accurate. Depending on the context, though, not always a bad thing.

I think the frustration comes from unduly emphasizing or nitpicking minor historical details which don't really matter in an ahistorical/alternative history game.

All I did was to express my opinion and say what they could have done better.
I guess people don't like that I started a poll about it but the reason is that I forgot to start a poll in my previous thread so I'm not really a 'prickish' pedant and offending people is not nice.

/edit: Nvmd that first part, didn't see the Mod action.

Anyway... to get back to topic: I actually love the way he's portrayed. Eccentric and semi-cartoonish over the top, he certainly leaves a mark. Historical accuracy is not important to me, I want interesting personalities that differ from each other. He's certainly portrayed a unique one.

He looks FAR MORE like Solon than Pericles. -_- This reminds me of the Gustavus Adolphus issue with Civ V where they conflated two leaders into one. They need to fix this, but will they? Who knows. It's a bit doubtful. They are capable of making only minor changes (making Teddy less fat for example), nothing so fundamental like shaving most of a beard off. :P

To me, Pericles' appearance is bad enough to make me block him from any games I play, or maybe I will play as him so I don't have to look at his ugly (and inaccurate) mug. The animation is fine. I don't mind that they aged him. But even in old age he would NOT look like that. He would have more muscles (he was active in military campaigns even in the year he died) for one thing. He died when he was 66, not 86. The portrayal should be fixed.

They need to fix this
No they don't.

The portrayal should be fixed.
What's the basis for this "should"? If they were trying to be realistic you might have a point, but they're clearly not.

This "need to fix" and "should be fixed" is just a big "I want them to do this!", but written in a way that makes it seem as if there were some universal truth in it.

I'm sympathetic to the idea that Civ leaders ought to be depicted in the prime of their lives, as their best selves. The exceptions would be those leaders who rose to power or had their greatest moments late in life.

So I approve of the decision to make Victoria and Pedro young and would probably have made Pericles look younger and stronger. On the other hand, leader art has never been too important to me, so I'm not one to get worked up about it.
