shyuhe-5 - re-learning civ

A quiet turnset. No settlers built since I have enough on my hands to churn out units for combating unhappiness. Plus we need 2 workers per city, so rather than settling now, we should wait a bit, let the workers chop a few jungles first, then churn out settler so that the workers can move to the new city. This way we save on the number of workers, which are going to have nothing to do later in the game.

Pressing enter shows us we are in mid-range size wise.

shyuhe5-AD0820-largest.jpg

I guess that's good, as my mail account keeps trying to tell me -- bigger is better.

We also have a nice event giving our archers +1 combat.

shyuhe5-AD0820-good-evt.jpg

I whipped a worker in capital and overflow to a trireme. The worker was sent north to add cottages to our northmost city, while the trireme proceed to rid us of the barb galley. Workboat is also used to fish our newest city.

Meanwhile, someone built the Hagia Sophia.

shyuhe5-AD0900-Hagia.jpg

Research wise, I finished Optics and go for CoL next since 1) it is on the path towards Civil Service and Education, and 2) we need courthouses if we are going to settle more cities.

shyuhe5-AD0940-optics.jpg

I haven't had a chance to build any caravels yet, so next player please build a couple once current builds are done. Also whip a little more often, since I whipped relatively less in my set.

Any idea why boudica is in a perpetual 10-turns peace?

Sorry I was out of town on rather short notice this weekend. Just got back in.

Looks like the game is still progressing nicely. Paulus - will you have time to play or should I swap the roster?

Boudica is in 10 turn peace because I begged money from her on turn 149. It's turn 159 so it should expire next turn.

I'm pretty busy at the moment but can still spare some time.

On a side note, I'm unavailable for play between Friday and Monday. I doubt I'm up by then but you never know.

160: CoL is in and I start on CS.

162: Dammit! All along we could get a decent trade from Boudica! I sell her two health for a happy and 7 GPT. It keeps the research up, is bonus happy and does not help her much at this stage anyway.

Civ4ScreenShot0152.jpg

165: Stealing is bad Boudica! She steals MC from us.

Civ4ScreenShot0153.jpg

On the plus side, meet the friendly Turk...
He doesn't even have Alpha yet, and no religion! I suppose he's isolated.

166: We get this event:

Civ4ScreenShot0155.jpg

I opt for the full plus with Boudica. The merrier the better. The last thing I want is that stack marching on us.
Isaac Newton is born in Ulundi, I send him to Bulawayo for an Academy. Hey, that's cottage spam city so it makes sense.

167: Isaac Newton is academized (is that even a word? ) in cottage galore Bulawayo. Soon enough it will overtake both Ulundi and Um... er, thingy.

Civ4ScreenShot0156.jpg

168: Wow! Look at Istanbul! It's got the 'mids, the Colossus and the GL! Too bad we can't get there now.
CS is in, revolt to Bureaucracy (why not?)

169: Nothing happens and I quit.

Nice to find a neighbor other than Boudica :) And the event for the positive relation was nice too. I guess that's why people leave gold in the bank!

Techwise, going towards education seems fine for now. Who knows - maybe the other AI are as backwards as the Ottomans? I think we should pump out a few more workers and settle the last fishing village on the homeland. We should also try to take care of the barb city to the north when we get a chance. It's a decent city and it would suck to lose it to the AI.

OK Got it..

Ralph

So a few MM comments to start with, I am surprised by some of our workers when there is all this jungle to pre clear for our next Fishing Village, certainly I struggle to puzzle out the grassland workshop and mine for a commerce city that has two un-worked mines already.

Similarly I switch to a lighthouse and stop the cottage being built on the plains forest.

lighthouse.jpg

So our 2nd caravel is built just in time as Mehmed has a caravel in the water but we should still beat him to circumnavigation.

2ndcaravel.jpg

Heading W we encounter Zara and yes we are a bit backward rapidly followed to the south of Zara by Ramesses.

zaratechs.jpg

ramesses.jpg

Charlemagne is also over there and nobody looks like they will like him so he is one to avoid trading with

charlemagne.jpg

Once Mehmed has encountered Boudicca tech trade opportunities open up. As Mehmed is isolated (he has no religion) so we do these tech trades.

trades-1.jpg

Our caravel going East has met a backward Joao who is also isolated and will be another religious pariah.

backwardsjaoa.jpg

So I played 9 turns due to miscounting and we have.
An invasion party ready to take Jute (there is a Buddhist missionary in Ondini who can pop Jute’s borders to save it a Monument as it is hammer poor).

invasion.jpg

We have education due in 9 and I still think have a shot at liberalism for Astronomy if we can trade / bulb for Philosophy. No happiness issues with Sugar hooked up.

endtechs-3.jpg

Still have two main blocs especially if we can put a returning caravel to missionary use and get Mehmed to join the Buddhist brotherhood.

twoblocs-1.jpg

Note Please keep cash at the level to give us choices for random events as it was a bit low when I got the save. Plus lets make sure the next GP remains the scientist from Umug as an Academy in the capital (or the option of bulbing philosophy for a liberalism run would be good).

Well I have some good news and some bad news. First the report:

IT: I trade calendar + 65 gold for construction with Mehmed. I sell the WM to Joao for 30 gold, trade maps with Mehmed and get 20 gold, trade maps with Zara and get 30 gold, and sell our map to Ramesses for 130 gold. I also sign OB with Zara and Ramesses. I switch research to literature (1 turn) and sell our map to Boudica for 50 gold.

Turn 179 - Literature is in.

Turn 181 - We circumnavigate! Ulundi starts the NE. I also trade paper and 45 gold for drama and HBR with Mehmed. I realized later that HBR won't help us since we don't have horses!

Turn 182 - Zara builds the SM. We capture Jute. There are lots of barb galleys around the eastern edge of that island (I counted 3).

Turn 183 - I found Ndondakusuka, the last fishing village on the mainland. HRE also builds the UoS.

Turn 184 - Boudica builds the Mahabodi. :goodjob:

Turn 185 - HRE demands optics. Nobody hates him so I give in, pushing him to cautious.

Turn 186 - Education is in. We also get a nice event:
Civ4ScreenShot0002-1.jpg

Turn 188 - a minor nuisance:
Civ4ScreenShot0003-1.jpg

Turn 189 - I notice that HRE has education already :(

Turn 190 - I stop here as I finish researching philosophy. We can go for liberalism but I'm pretty sure Charlie will beat us to it. It may be better to research astronomy. The city to the SW (Umug) can spawn a GS in a few turns if we want it to. Otherwise, fire the specialists there and hire enough to pop the next person out of Ulundi instead.

I whipped our cities pretty heavily so they're a little small now. But we can start building the GT next turn. I suggest the city south of Ulundi (Ng?) as it can run 2 food sources and has enough hills to build it in a reasonable amount of time.

Zara is teching very fast right now. The others are much more manageable. Boudica is limping along to feudalism (finally). We also have lots of tech trade opportunities available:

Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

I think we should whore old techs with Joao to get engineering. Since liberalism is most likely out, we may want to pick up PP and guilds (by trading for feudalism first with philosophy) from Zara and/or Ramesses.

So the good news is that Boudica will be easy to kill once we hit rifles. The bad news is that I think liberalism is out of reach.

Since the assessment is that liberalism is out of reach, I swapped liberalism to Astronomy. It will give us overseas trade, and also probably a good tech trading chip. Also try to get some tech trade, but only two that I deemed worthwhile.

Shyue5-AD1300-Joan-Trade.jpg

Shyue5-AD1320-Boudica.jpg

Tries to get Printing Press using Education, but they either ask for an arm and a leg as well, or don't want to trade. (or probably both).

So we still have Education untraded. Depending on the team could get some cheap techs, but I rather save the WFYABTA limit for something useful.

Even though I removed a merchant to allow the city to grow, it still produces a scientist before Ulundi

Shyuhe5-AD1350-academy.jpg

An academy was built in the capitol, which somehow yield better beakers than others. Probably because of the bureaucracy.

As expected, Charle grabbed Liberalism in 6 turns, which will beat us even if we go for it.

Shyuhe5-AD1360-liberalism.jpg

I have started to built more units, and keep myself from whipping to compensate for the heavy whipping shyue did. I suggest we shift the capitol somewhere else and have Ulundi become the major GP house.

I stopped when we pop a merchant.

Shyuhe-AD1390-merchant.jpg

We could settle him, or have him go to the portugese city with the ToA for a trade mission. I am fine either way.

Oops, I think I cut and pasted too much. But in fairness, it's not a TOTAL copy. The roster part was properly updated :p Let me fix that now...

First of all, I decided on spending the GM on a trade mission. In my opinion, Settling loses a lot of power once the early game is over.

200: Nothing happens.

201: We're not looking too good in the tech department.

Civ4ScreenShot0192.jpg

I also decide on a trade with Mehmed... because it's possible. We're so far behind I want anything I can get my hands on.

Civ4ScreenShot0193.jpg

202: Astro is in... Whoo! Look at our tech rate go!

I immediately proceed to trade it to Ramesses for PP. Always useful to have. Zara and Charle did not want to cough up anything for it (must be close to researching it himself, a good thing to trade it around ASAP)

Civ4ScreenShot0194.jpg

Next tech is Chemistry, as it's an useful bargaining chip, an useful tech to have if war is on our minds, and an useful tech to have if war is on others minds. I do not need Lib yet (I'd like to keep Boudica happy until we can sink that knife in) and Guilds will likely hit the markets soon.

203: Zara asks for Astro, I oblige since I know he's nearly there himself and the extra diplo doesn't hurt.

Guilds does indeed hit the markets and I get it from Joao for CS/Paper.

5 turns of boring micro follow...

208: I stop here because Chemistry is in, and I think this is the time to get down and think up our plan. Are we going on the warpath with Chemistry or just trade it away? Are we now going to head for war?

I wanted a bit of a discussion point, so only 9 turns.

Personally, I think the time for war is upon us. Boudica is falling further behind and we might be able to get a good tech advantage in against her,
