Anybody got some helpful hints? I haven't really figured it out yet. :(

put your fist on your stomach if you're singing using the diaphragm you'll feel your stomach pushing back on your fist

Er you probably need a qualified tutor, but to sing properly apparently you need to use your diaphragm and you need to know how to breath porperly. You must project your voice using your lungs/diaphragm. Try and sing without breathing properly, now force your voice using your lungs. If you can learn to do that, and you have a half decent voice then apparently your well on your way.

Forgive me I'm not an expert but a friend of mine told me what he learnt so I'm just passing it on.

The diaphragm doesn't help you breathe out, it helps you breathe in. When you're told to use your diaphragm when singing or playing an instrument, what is meant is to put some power into the air; use your lower ribcage to empty your whole lungs, rather than just your upper chest to give feeble puffing.

Imagine that you're squeezing yourself out like a tube.

And when you breathe in, try to push all the air into the bottom of your chest until the top fills up: far too many people snatch breaths and take and use half-lungfuls of air.

This is very techy, the first trick is to try not to contract your throat muscles, if you keep them loose, it will force your abs (or diaphragm) to project the voice instead of the throat.

practive breathing in large amounts of air. not just so you feel it expanding your lungs, but also your diaphram.
and make sure you open your mouth a lot when you sing.

Poke a hole in your diaphragm so that you can whistle with it!
