Six brainwashing techniques They're using on you right now

I make love to those who fear me.
Sounds a little like that whole "pre-emptive rape" thing is working out for you.

@plarq: These tactics are almost certainly used by governments more than anyone, even corporations. Corporations don't have armies, censorship powers, etc. If you don't notice the PRC doing it, then it must be working on you, because they're possibly the worst propagandists of any major government on Earth.

PRC is doing it so effectively, to the extent that I'm afraid of using Chinese language in my daily life.

That's why I say they have a "fear" doctrine.
Why would you be afraid of using Chinese? Aren't you in China?

The PRC's propaganda is very bad - trust me, I've read a lot of PRC propaganda - but they have one of those six down absolutely perfectly: they restrict the sources of information their people have access to. That they do better than any other nation on the face of the planet. Which may well explain the shoddiness of their other propaganda measures, come to think of it; why spend money on good propaganda when the people will believe it no matter how bad it is?

[Edit: delete me]

I'm afraid of using Chinese because Chinese language is censored more than English content. The government is less worried about inappropriate contents written in another language. Also, using English gives me a "banana Chinese" feel and supremacy against my fellow compatriots.

I'm not really sure how many people really believe in government propaganda. Even the pro-government people constantly whining about censorship, corruption etc. The government do really good at censorship though, so all those whining are hollow with no real evidence--all censored without a trace. They just protest because something in their memory cannot be found anywhere after a period of time.(Now it is quite 1984-esque, you know yesterday the government said A, today they say B, but you cannot find any evidence that they have said A)

You read bad ones because you're reading English version of Chinese propaganda, trust me, this country's English education sucks, so they offer you poor translation of propaganda work.

Heh, North Korea :p

In context to using chants and catchy slogans to "brainwash" people, how do national anthems of countries fall in the catergory? What about pledges and oaths?

A definite case of brainwashing. Not that it's necessarily bad to instill a love of one's country in a person, but they often go too far.

When I was a child we had a school pledge, which, despite being technically illegal - like much of what went on at my school, actually - I was repeatedly suspended for refusing to say it. "I honour my god, I serve my school, and I am loyal to my Queen and country." I tol the principal, an old-school British piece of filth who actually spanked me on one occasion - there's more than a few laws against a public school-teacher doing that, douchebag - that I didn't believe in his god, I served no-one unless it was by choice, and my Queen and country had done nothing to earn my loyalty, and wouldn't get it until they did. Funnily enough, I still believe all three of those things. I was a serious pain in the arse as a child.

@plarq: It's not just the translation, it's what they're saying. As you pointed out, it's very 1984-ish, but it comes across as poorly done. Maybe it's just because I actually have access to different information, but it just seems like their propaganda is really obviously propaganda, whereas good propaganda you'd never even notice. That makes sense about using Chinese.

Because it is impossible to defend onself from these types of manipulations, I have taught myself to become more defiant and non-comformist. I tend to embrace ideas ridiculed by the majority, and subconsciously start to dislike ideas embraced by the majority.
"non-conformist"... us vs them, labeling imo, makes for a closed mind no?

Say it with me, "I am a 'me' and nothing else." To define yourself by a culturally-accepted label is to limit your possibilities and development potential. You are not 'non-conformist', you are Defiant47ist. The ultimate form of non-conformity is to reject the labels of non-conformity :crazyeye:

Do you embrace such ideas simply because they are ridiculed; do you dislike simply because they are embraced?
I never understood that. It makes no sense at all. When I've been in group huddles I've just felt queasy from breathing everyone's stale breath and sweat.
Surely group purpose is better demonstrated by purposeful, efficient deployment to starting positions?
Gotta pump the team up and snap them out of their analytical minds and into their base, ass kicking minds.

Plus, it's just what teams do, man. No true sports team doesn't have huddles!

No true democracy doesn't have political parties!

No true political person is a Green or independent!

You're throwing your vote away voting for a non-mainstream candidate (, idiot)!

Just thought I'd air that out again. Needs repeating imo

Good article, although it barely scrapes the surface of misinformation and psychological methods. I agree, perhaps you've read my sig lately? :)

I guess the "giving your supposed opponent a label and then ridiculing him using the label you just gave him" is in that list someplace. O'Reilly is the king of that.
Hi Bill, how are you today?
