The Death of Bernard of Italy
The butterfly effect is said to affect history greatly- stepping on a butterfly can, given enough time, change everything. For some reason- some divergence, back in the distant past, by the death of Charlemange a lot of things were changing.

One was the death of Bernard of Italy. An influential man in Italy (with even the title of King) from 810 onwards, it was expected by all that this arrangement, endorsed by Charlemange himself as well as Louis, would continue.

But this was not to be. In an ironic twist of fate, he was travelling north to pay homage to Louis, and died of disease at Chalon. The end of his 'reign' (he was a vassal of Louis) would prevent a factor of conflict which, later historians have argued, could have triggered a civil war, or even the loss of Italy.

(OOC: In OTL, Bernard of Italy was said to be plotting rebellion, so Louis advanced on him. Bernard tried to negotiate terms at Chalon, but was forced to surrender and, while Louis only intended to blind him, the procedure caused his death two days later. Warning: My source is Wikipedia)

But at the time, it was not seen as such. The death of Bernard was interpreted as a bad omen for Louis's reign. A pious man, he was haunted by it- could it mean that God was not smiling on him? Amongst other things, as he saw it, that would mean the end of the Empire. This fear would affect the rest of his life...

The Dispute over Learning
In the reign of Charlemange, there had been a transfer to some degree of schools from the old style (a type the Merovingians had inaugerated, in which military tactics and manners were taught) to a style of general learning. Alcuin, a leading scholar and teacher at the court, was one of the primary movements behind this development.

However, some opposed these changes. Pepin, an old nobleman educated under the old style, advanced to Louis the argument that the more emphasis on one subject, the less there was on all others- and therefore that schools of military tactics should exist.

Louis was inevitability opposed to these developments- schools of general learning included religious learning and the study of Scripture. The Church disagreed as well as for the same reasons.

However, this was not the case for everybody. Many Frankish noblemen welcomed the chance for schools of military tactics to exist, and Louis (especially given the mood of the nobility) was not certain enough of the wrongness of such a case to ban such a development.

"Old" and "New" schools, as the Frankish nobility called them (without much justification in fact- the "New" schools were rooted in Greek and Roman tradition) would compete for many decades to come...

The Roman Ideal
The psycological changes from the death of Bernard of Italy were not at first realised, but they were further then skin-deep. Louis, anxious about the fate of his realm, wondered about it's legitimacy. Some historians have argued that this was not inevitable, but a series of bad omens over the days after Bernard's death reinforced this feeling in the whole court- especially him.

Whilst he did not dare say it, his actions suggest that he was beginning to worry about his legitimacy. The Franks had begun as invaders, and held what land they did through force. Against the pagans this could be easily argued as legitimate, but what about their wars with the Empire itself?

The default argument was that the Pope had crowned him Holy Roman Emperor. But the Pope also recognised the Anglo-Saxon state of England- did this mean he had torn England from the Empire? Bad omens seemed to emerge whenever he began to calm down- this suggested that something was very wrong.

Louis couldn't have restored the proper Roman Empire if he wanted to, although at times he considered it. But in a state of such anxiety, he began to emphasise Romanness even more. He avoided the very word "Frank" whenever practical, and copied much of the symbolism of the Eastern Roman Empire, and to a certain extent the Duchy of Beventum (which was beginning to emphasise it's Romanness as well).

These changes would lead to the revival of a Romannist movement. But that was in the future...

SENT.

How do they compare to others?

Vey nicely, they are clear and basic. likewise others hevent sent pages and pages of orders, which makes it easier to update.

Cardiff (should be southern most city)
Paris (...it is not Rome)
Cordoba (inland city, directly north of the Straits of Gibraltar)
Baghdad (...it is not Cairo)
Ribe (next southern most city, below the incorrect one)
Stavanger (should be at southwestern bit of Norway)
Stockholm (further north, and in the bump peninsula thingy)
Krakow (assuming it is the capital of the dark green nation...not in its territory.)
Vienna (is in France right now)
Riga (not in Estland...along the Latvian Gulf)
Beograd (not in Bulgaria right now)
Corinth (not Conrith...put in Greece)
Kiev (currently in Orange nation, eastern most city)
Benevento (northwest by one city)

Yea, can we get the map changed? Borders still might need to be altered, and we should have a complete map before we officially start.
