The Emperor walked the halls of the Imperial Palace, awaiting a meeting with some of his most trusted allies within the Roman aristocracy. What the nobles did not know was that this “weak” Emperor was a member of a secret order, an order kept so secret that not even the previous Emperors knew much about it. This order was called the Order of Christ, an underground group of Orthodox nobles opposed to the Empires conversion back to Hellenism. The group had been formed shortly after the original conversion, and maintained their secrecy at all costs. Through excellent political maneuvering they were able to get one of their members on the Imperial Throne when the Emperor died without an heir. This is the story of how the worship of Jupiter was finally put to rest.
As part of the orders plans for the future of the Empire, now that they had gained the reins, they needed to clear out some of the more daring of the Hellenic nobles. Thus, a plan was conspired which led to the execution of five of the most influential Hellenic noblemen in a semi-fictitious plot to overthrow the Empire. Once the dust had settled, none would dare to challenge the authority of the Emperor directly; the Emperor was free to make an announcement which changed the course of history.
“Today I stand before you bringing wonderful news. Today I, Constantine XIII, Emperor of the Romans, am issuing a decree of tolerance throughout the Empire. As of now, all worshipers of Christ following the Orthodox Church will not be viewed as inferior by the imperial government, nor will the government interfere in their worshiping. Nor will the government make any attempt to slow the efforts of Orthodox missionaries. Moreover, as I am an old man without issue, when I am dead, the Emperor of Angora will assume the throne in Constantinople. The great Roman Empire shall be united once more!”
The crowed was shocked. Some cheered, some booed, but none dared to stand against the Emperor, as his status as “weak” was quickly lifted after the public executions of the Hellenic nobles. Though he didn’t say it, everybody knew that the Emperor of Angora was an Orthodox practitioner. The crowd quickly realized that this would mean a return to Orthodoxy. The Emperor had already taken steps to ensure that none of the army garrisoned in Constantinople would rebel. In order to create a motive for the nobles to with to assassinate the Empire, and use the motive to frame them, he had ordered half of the capitol city’s garrison to be from the Empire of Angora. This group was an entirely Orthodox force, and thus were not a threat to the transition.
The commander of the Imperial Guard, the Emperors personal security force, and the captain of the City Guard, which normally garrisoned the city of Constantinople, were also secretly members of the Order of Christ. The officers underneath each of the men were also mostly openly or secretly Orthodox. Their cooperation was assured.

10 years later.
The Emperor laid on his death bed. Several months after issuing the decree of tolerance, he had formally “converted” to Orthodoxy to ease the transition that lay ahead. Now the nobles of the Empire were almost entirely of the Orthodox faith, some having converted of their own will, some having been Orthodox all along, and some being convinced to convert. The Patriarch of Constantinople was restored, and the Hellenic temples had been converted and reconverted to Orthodox churches. The Hagia Sophia was restored to her former glory. The Emperor smiled as he thought of how far they had come in the last ten years. Then he closed his eyes for the final time. Several days later, the Emperor of Angora arrived and Constantinople, and was christened Constantine IX, Emperor of the Romans.
