SKNES: Architecture of Aggression

Aquitaine Scholars note the turbulant diplomacy after the Battle of Tours, especially in the matter of Tribute and Pacts.

To the Pope
Are we the only Catholic Nation loyal enough to send your duly deserved tithe, despite the uniting Moors on our border, the discontent of the Basques, the dangerous roads leading through Provence and Burgundy, and the Savoy, while Venice is too busy despite her proximity and the Empire due to much of the same reasons?

Yes indeed. We will carve a path of blood and float on a raft of bodies if we must, but you will receive your demanded tribute from those who are truly loyal.

(OOC: Just a little PO'ed about that.)

To the Duke of Aquitane
From King Marcus Aurelius Cassius of Venice

We have seen your message, and we have not refused, but instead held off, for if your own government could not pull up enough money, would you want to send a small tribute even though asking permission to delay on it, and being granted such?

So far, momo1000 (Cordoba) and spaceman98 (Poles) are the only orders in.

Everyone else has until Wednesday to send orders.

To King Marcus Arelius Cassius of Venice
From Duke Bernald Reginald III of Aquitaine

Firstly, please don't mis-spell the name of our nation.
Secondly, we're already scrapping the barrel while the Pope declared his desire for aid. And He in his infinite wisdom has over turned our requests, forcing us to reduce our vital defenses while allowing leeway for the Franks. This is his wisdom.
Thirdly, we do not have a safe path to send this tribute, for the minor lords of Provence and Burgundy are treachurous as any Basque, and the heretics of Savoy are not to be trusted. Not only do we have to reduce our garrisons, but we also have to pull even more men off to cleave a path for our tribute.
Fourthly, I've seen you state that you don't have the funds at the moment, but I have not seen any papal notice that he has accepted this turn of events.
Fifthly, I will now answer your question directly. Our government could not pull up enough money except by selling off equipment of soldiers we are forced to raise against the Moorish threat. We are then forced to pull even more soldiers off the front line to guard our tribute. Finally, we have asked permission and it was NOT granted.

It is in the grace of god, for he will defend us. The Pope saw to it that the nation closest to the Mahometan shall reduce their defenses, while allowing several of the other faithful leeway in their payments. It is the word of god, and we do not understand Him nor the Pope, and can only trust in his wisdom.

To Duke Bernald Reginald III of Aquitaine
From King Marcus Aurelius Cassius of Venice

We are sorry for this unfortunate event-it seems my Advisor of the Treasury was mistaken, and Venice have enough money to continue with its plans, and donate to the Pope. That advisor has been promptly removed and replaced. We hope our relations will remain positive despite this.

OOC- I re-sent you my orders, SK.

To King Marcus Arelius Cassius of Venice
From Duke Bernald Reginald II of Aquitaine

No need to apologize for the acts of those seeking to sabotage the last bastions of Christianity, for it must be Him who allowed you to catch the traitor, and aid his guiding Hand for humanity. Our friendship shall only grow stronger despite temptation; let us dance and sing "Praise the Lord"!

to Venice and Aquitaine
from the POPE
Blessed be, followers of Christ.
As I have said before, I will give leeway to the growing Catholic kingdoms, and will not force the payment of tithes to the Holy See this time. My only warning is that if the Holy See would fall, if god would see your doings as wrong, he will not be giving any leeway. I may be humble enough to allow the tithes go a miss once, but god with his watchful eyes may be not be so granting. If the tithes are not sent, I will accept it, but god might not.

Librus Domni
Town of Pau, Barony of Bearn, Dukedom of Aquitaine, Anno Domino 752

Duke Bernald's quite the control freak
Wants to know all within his fiefs
Counting us like herds of cattle
Now to call us all to Battle!
All men receive vows from his lesser, and owes vows to his better. All men has a lord and has his charge. All men have one place in the hierarchy under God our Lord.

Sir Jerome Lucien Blackmoor was riding to the town of Pau, for he has been summoned by the Baron, Sir Peridor, to meet there.

Beside him rode a fellow knight, Sir Jules Strongaxe, who gained his title for gallant duty at the Battle of Tours. It seems that all the knights and lords of the realm were called to meet their Barons, and all the Barons and Marquis to meet the Duke. Was it war? The border of the Moors was still tenacious and unsettled, and an expedition might be sent any day; or even an expedition into Provence, where the first payment of the tithe was nearly stolen by a robber baron, and only three survived the return trip after delivering the valuables? But there was not call to arms... yet.

Pau, nestled into the convergence of two rivers and three hills, came into view. Two of the towers which festooned the town were Roman in origin, stout stone held up with rubble and wood. A great keep, itself once a tower, stood at the highest hill; its lower extremes were the same as its fellows, but its high tower tops were made with the fresh masonry; the Baron of Bearn explained this great expense, after holding out nearly a year in the depilated keep against rampaging Moors, that he preferred if his breastworks didn't always catch on fire every other day.

Over the bridge the two knights rode, and it was clear that both ahead and behind a great march of knights came.

Something big is about to happen.

-------------------------------------

Upon the podium, the Baron watched as the Bishop read the missive from Bordeaux.
Lords, Knights, proud Christians of the Realm!

Today, the Duke of Aquitaine, your Lord Bernald Reginald III, shall command you to do your duty.

You shalt count every family, and take from each family an able-bodied man for war, and you shall record the number of men in that family, and of their religious beliefs.

And you shalt arrive at Bearn ready for combat in a week's time, with all your arms and armor, and a wagon for each Lord and two Mules for each Knight full of supplies.

And you shalt be prepared to, with your Baron or Marquis, to march to Toulouse by the end of this Month at the start of campaigning season.

May we win a victory!

Duci Aquitinus, Bernald Reginald

That done, the Bishop seemed to wish to continue before he stopped himself. He made a brief smile before looking over the assembled men. He then whispered to Peridor, who also chucked, and left the podium.

"It seems, men, that we're to prepare for war." cried the Baron "Ready your men, bodily and spiritually, and be ready to meet your Lord! And ready them to meet our Lord!"

-----------------------------------------------------------

At Toulouse, the clerk's hands moved rapidly over the papers. "229 Noble Houses from Bearn" came the missive "The first, right hand of Sir Periodor, is thus named as Sir Jules Strongaxe and brought 35 men from the same number of families, 11 of them following the old beliefs."

The Duke nodded as the reports streamed in, soon he will have his army, and he will have his state, and soon he will march again upon the battle field.

And soon he will win a victory in the battlefield of Faith, and prove his worth to all who has left before him.

It would be nice to play as Armenia, if that's ok. It'll be my first NES though, so I'll probably get wiped out horribly. :p

*Double post* I'd like Dark Purple as my colour if you accept, by the way.
I'll post more info if I get your confirmation.

Heraclea, capital of the Kingdom of Venice
In the Year of Our Lord 752
1473arsenal1.jpg

Construction of the Arsenal began around 750 AD, during Venice's pre-republican era. It would become the largest industrial complex in Europe prior to the Industrial Revolution, spanning an area of about 45 ha (110 acres), or about fifteen percent of Venice. Surrounded by a 2 mi (3.2 km) rampart, laborers and shipbuilders regularly worked within the Arsenal, building ships that sailed from the city's port. With high walls shielding the Arsenal from public view and guards protecting its perimeter, different areas of the Arsenal each produced a particular prefabricated ship part or other maritime implement, such as munitions, rope, and rigging. These parts could then be assembled into a ship in as little as one day. An exclusive forest owned by the Arsenal navy, in the Montello hills area of Veneto, provided the Arsenal's wood supply. This form of shipbuilding allowed boats to be constructed in parts and put together in a day, at most two, greatly saving time and cost.

Welcome :) I'll just need to know your form of government and state religion.

I have yours now.

To the Roman Empire:
We recognize that we are a revolter state in your eyes. However, we still stand by our view that you proved unworthy to rule us when you almost allowed the Muslims to conquer our state. Perhaps in the future, we may work together as common Greeks and Christians, but for now, we will go on our separate path.

From:Byzantium
To:Sicily

I am sending an army to Italy to reinstate my imperial rights over southern italy. You had better cooperate, or your little "revolt" will not survive. Should you cooperate, you will be recognised as the king of sicily answerable only to the Emperor of Byzantium (Your rightful liege.).
