I think it has to do with Calatrava. He's probably the hottest architect out there. The twisting design eliminates the wind sway which would be considerable where they're discussing putting it especially for an all residential property.

IIRC Las Vegas is going to put up a building Crown Las Vegas that will be 1888 feet.

Calatrava is IMO one of the best architects alive, if not the best. His work in Lyon is astonishing.

To all the naysayers: You're just being Luddites. How else to fit in an ever increasing human population while still having enough agricultural land to produce the food needed to feed said population? (Not necessarily skyscrapers this tall but mass numbers of tall building nonetheless.)

That's exactly what I was thinking. It's just totally foolish to build such enormous buildings these days.

It's possible to build the thing in New York, Tokyo, London, or Shanghai... but Dubai? I think they're asking for trouble.

Greenhouses in buildings? Not that feasible an idea IMO. The top storey is the only place where you can place one that will receive sufficient sunshine (or you can leave it open and turn it into a field) but even then the area won't be very large. Also cereal crop fields will need deeper soil. Rice needs waterlogged paddies. All this means more structural requirements. No way I say. At best they can probably have a small vegetable farm up there.

That would have been the greatness of the project, to make them grow on all floors, and make special buildings only for that. Otherwise it's useless.

It looks like the Burj is adopting the cigarette pack approach the engineer and architect of Sears Tower did.

Chicago's next potential tall building is not proposed to be that tall. The Burj will be about 15% taller (2300 ft.) than the oversized birthday candle 115 story Santiago Calatrava "Fordham Spire" (2000 ft). It will be quite an engineering and architectural marvel if it gets done (The twisting shape means no wind sway. The building would move 2 degrees with each floor and 270 degrees from top to bottom and cantilevered for unobstructed views).

I see Trump Tower going up fast and it looks like he's been forced to abide by Chicago's great architectural style and melds very well with the significant buildings surrounding it.
