A nice photo I found!

To the Town within the Fallen Serpent Forest
I hear and I speak. We thank you for your information, and will seek to build any roads on platforms above the grounds, or even as rope bridges among the trees. Our friendship will be offered to you, as I am tolerant of all peoples and love nature as you and the elves do. Thanks to your warning, we will wait until we learn more of the Fallen Serpent Forest before learning more. Any roads we build will be on rope bridges or boardways above the ground, and wayhouses will be established high in the branches.

To the City of Horagrid
I speak and I hear. I am Wendell the Tall, Wizard of Marburg Fords and I extend greetings and friendship to you. Already I have spoken with the achieved centaur wizard
Steedi. He is a good centaur. As with him, I am a lover of nature and her glories and wish we can all enjoy this freely. I wish to build a road to your city from the fords as a token of friendship as well as a bringer of trade. Will you accept?

It took him most of his reserve power he had in his command, now that his connection to his Masters' plane was severed, to build the citadel.

Normally, doing so in any of the other planes caused everyone in the immediate vicinity flee in panic and terror or else send a group of heavily armed men to loot the treasures within (Lucius always kept a chest filled with pyrite to deal with them). In this plane, it attracted humans to it like a fire attracts a moth. Lucius personally did not know whether or not to be pleased or be disturbed by this development, although he certainly would not let the chance slip by. They would have to be dealt with.

But first, Lucius began to write.

Dear Lord/Lady/Viscount/Viscountess/Mayor/Sir/Madam/Nobleman/Noblewoman of Tysis

Through the grapevine I have heard of your great city in such a close proximity to my Citadel, and I had always made a habit of mine to be kindly to my neighbors.

But as you know, not all neighbours are as kindly in return as we would wish them to be. I would know because some of them hung me by the neck a few years back.

Therefore I would wish to know of any information that you may have of the surrounding region. You have been in this world much longer than I have, and I would be very disappointed if I find you lacking in this knowledge.

I will visit soon.

P.S.: if you wish to contact me or ask any question, just write in the back of this letter.

Lucius folded the paper into a little airplane and sent it eastwards towards the city...

to Lord Hundri of Horagrid
Yes my brethren. It should be simple to understand, we will aid you against this barbarian menace and bring it to its knees.

to Wendell the Tall, Wizard of Marburg Fords
I understand your need for an alliance with the dwarves who dig into mother, for now. I guess it is a little early for a close alliance and so for now I only wish for aid in defeating the barbarian menace threatening our brethren in Horagrid.

"Roland....ROLAND!"

"Yes, Your Excellency?"

King Faraday placed his finger on a small mark on the map near where the Spiral Citadel was marked, "What is this?"

Roland shrugged, "A town? No idea."

John sighed, "This won't due. Send a messenger to the city. Tell they're going to pay tribute or deal with me." A toothy grin etched itself across the swarmy face of King Faraday, Roland the Adviser bowed and left-escaped-the Spiral Throne to find a messenger.

to Camrol Steedi

I am not sure of the speed of your forces, but even if we can muster troops this year, we cannot march to even sight range of the castle. We are preparing to build roads to Horagrid and muster some troops there: mostly Hurlers, but perhaps a company of Hedgehogs as well as they finish training. Perhaps then they can march south with you or defend Horagrid while their guardsmen rides south. Finally, I have other problems I must deal with to the north.

To King Landi

We will build a road to your castle as soon as possible and guard it. We will also send scouts to track the barbarians if possible. We will do everything we can and destroy the thieves and bandits.

to to Wendell the Tall, Wizard of Marburg Fords
Yes, you are correct. It will take a little while longer to protect our brethren in Horagrid than I first assumed. Any protection aid for their city for now would be welcome, once I deal with the barbarians of the plains I could support you north in your own troubles.

To the Wizard Lucius,

We will provide our maps to you. Other than that, we have little knowledge. We keep inside our walls and seldom interact with the outside world. Our people prefer it that way.

Oddly, this message had been intercepted, and something else written below:

Wizard Lucius,

I am an academy professor of potions here in the beautiful city of Tysis. I plead with you to not trust the words you have read above my own. Our people do not prefer it that way, and the words being written to you are those of a ruthless dictator. Our walls are shut and our streets filled with soldiers. Your presence has threatened that 'order'. Would you be willing to accept me as a visitor to your citadel? I have ways to escape the eyes of my masters. I can give you more information about this region.

From the town that King Faraday desires tribute from:

We only ask that you continue to let us make a living as fishermen and perhaps build a road to our humble town. We have long wanted to trade our fish with other lands, but have always lacked the resources to do so. But please, do not send your army and do not slaughter our people. We will provide what you need.

Aye, we wholeheartedly accept this proposal.

Any news from my angry bird spying above Castle 7? Or does that need to be a scouting order?
Also, what's the approximate cost in gold for, say, 100km of paved roads? And any chance mana might make it cheaper? Or do we just throw in gold in a guessing game?

We will build a road network to your city within the year. Since your town has joined our Spiral Empire without resistance, we will make sure your people are treated like equals. A such, we will not be replacing your local leaders nor interfering with your local culture.

May we be at peace.
Always.

LDi, as usual, asking questions at the right time. I was just about to post something about roads cost:

.5 gold per KM will get you a decent paved road (50 gold per 100km)
.1 gold per KM will get you a dirt road. (10 gold per 100km)
You can go anywhere between .1 and .5 to achieve a middle ground.
Or you can get crazy and put 1 gold per 1 KM into your road, which will basically make it paved, marked, and serviced.

(I'm putting this under the "Spending" section in the rules for further reference.)

If you just load gold and then load more gold into a road, you could easily turn it into a "highway" of sorts. Mana can't be used to create roads.

And I'll get to Castle 7 eventually.

I have edited the other revealed castle details to provide a short description of the unique unit.

orders sent

to Hogarid:
Brethren. I will be sending some troops for protection of your city and begin to build a road like Wendell the tall making your city a center of the roads. (ooc: which might make it a center of trade) Also I am sending scouts to the barbarian menace and begin build a powerful force to fight them. Soon we could claim victory over these humans.

Strange question, but could magic be used for any kind of transportation?

Not unless you have a spell designating at such. And then it wouldn't really be for consistent roads (unless it was a sustainable spell), but would rather be for a surge of movement in a unit, or teleportation within the spell's range. Example: You could have a sustainable spell that builds a magical road from one settlement to another, that you pay mana to maintain for a certain # of turns. Its power level would define how good of a magical "road" it is - and ultimately how effective it is. Teleportation would work in much the same way, but you'd be focusing on a specific unit or perhaps a group of units if a blast, and it would have to have a lot of power to it to work effectively at long ranges (if it was on Weak power, some of your troops might just disappear). You would also have to designate the range from your Citadel, and the units could only re-appear in that range (so teleporting across the map would be really expensive). I hope this helps.

Teleportation could also be effective as a spell to use in a battle, though - or when you think a battle might happen that turn. Then it would be a tactical thing, included in orders and then potentially included in an update. In this case, weak power would be more acceptable, but you'd only be able to teleport a small number of troops so the effect would be limiting.

By the way, I changed unit-training times slightly. Shouldn't effect most of you, but sorry for the mid-game change.

Spoiler :
1-20 gold: You can recruit and move the unit in the same orders.
21-40: 1 turn to recruit, move it on the next turn.
41-60: 2 turns to recruit, move it on the 3rd turn.
61-80: 3 turns to recruit, move it on the 4th turn.
81-100: 4 turns to recruit, move it on the 5th turn.
101-120: 5 turns to recruit, move it on the 6th turn.
121-140: 6 turns to recruit, move it on the 7th turn.
141-160: 7 turns to recruit, move it on the 8th turn.
And so on.
(You do not pay upkeep on a unit being trained.)

What if your unit costs more than 120? An Aryan Trio costs 158!

Sorry everyone. I did some calculations and changed training times again (much shorter now).

Spoiler :
1-20 gold: You can recruit and move the unit in the same orders.
21-50: 1 turn to recruit, move it on the next turn.
51-100: 2 turns to recruit, move it on the 3rd turn.
101-150: 3 turns to recruit, move it on the 4th turn.
151-200: 4 turns to recruit, move it on the 5th turn.
And so on.
(You do not pay upkeep on a unit being trained.)

Last time, I promise.

Orders received from many of you. Thanks for your speed and accuracy!

Once again, Wendell's mind flowed along the River of Peace. This time he moved north and scanned the town there. Then, he sent his message.

To The Town North on the River of Peace
I speak and I hear. I am Wendell the Tall, Wizard of Marburg Fords. I am the leader of the Halfling Folk in on this river and a lover of nature. I wish to bring trade in the form of roads and bridges to the north where you live. Please name yourselves, and the area around you. I am a benevolent leader who will let you live along your lives, except in much greater peace and security. Speak, and I hear.

Dear Sir/Madam

Please! Address me by my proper title of "Envoy," or just call me Lucius.

And I would be delighted to have you in my citadel. I believe we would have so much to discuss...
