SLYNES - Swirly Lights Yonder, a Never Ending Story

My mistake! I should have been more clear!

Let's just say that in studying the Satellian technologies, they managed to make false signals. The Satellians think that they saw them leave, but the second wormhole signal was faked. It's up to you if they realize it at any point, however.

The Singularity Council, the governing body of the Geskani race, had the first emergency session it had ever had since the war against the other nations that once divided Ges, nations which the Singularity had gone on to conquer and absorb. Upon becoming part of the Council, the new member is given the number of the Geskani they are replacing, a number from One to Five.

One rose. “These events are troubling. We have analyzed the remains of the vessels that attacked our fleet. They could very likely have destroyed all of the vessels there had we not armed all of our ships. The system is also littered with the wreckage of what seems to be a dead race. A quick scan of the system shows that nuclear weapons were used.”

Five motioned to speak, and stood. “All aliens we have met, living or dead, have been hostile. We also have yet to find a surviving homeworld. All worlds have the marks of previous alien interference, with the exception of those within our system. The galaxy is not empty, and it is not friendly. I suggest that we expand and rearm. The more powerful that the Singularity is, the more capable it is of defending itself.”

*****
“Captain! Our scanners show unidentified craft closing in on our position!” cried a Signals Officer. Zuro, as many Fallen do, perked up at the sign of potential danger.

“Arm all weapons, alert any ship that doesn’t. At the slightest hint of aggression, open fire.”

The enemy ships assembled to attack. Suddenly, one of the unknown vessels exploded, casting debris in all directions. That was more then hostile enough for the Geskani to open fire, an action they promptly took. Four of the enemy vessels were destroyed, collapsing in on themselves as their power sources created a micro-star. Obviously, these ships weren’t as stable as the Geskani designs.
The Geskani didn’t have much time to celebrate this (as a true Fallen would, by drinking the blood of their enemy, something that is sadly impossible in space combat) as the remaining enemy ships opened fire on the Flagship, destroying it, before destroying yet another ship of the Geskani fleet. With the Admiral dead, Zuro knew what had to be done.

“All ships, this is Captain Zuro. I am hereby taking command of the fleet. May the blood of our enemies colour the void.”

*****
Four raised himself up. “Our population now sits at around 13.5 billion. We can afford to expand, even if it means taking losses. We could be entering a society of warfare and chaos, a galactic society that is not united, and will not submit to us. We need to unite it, and make it submit if we are to survive as a dominant species. Survival of the Singularity is of more importance then the survival of a few million Geskani. More Geskani will come, the Families are more then competent at that, and we can always add fertility supplements to the government issue blood if we need to. But the Singularity will only be around once. I want that single period of existence to last an eternity. I concur with Five. The galaxy is the enemy, and the Singularity is an island in a sea of chaos.”

One waited for Four to finish and immediately stood up. Patience was a rare trait in a Geskani. Their ancestors had sped through the jungles of the past at great speeds, hunting after giant beasts in order to drink their blood. Speed was the essence of Geskani society. “I concur also. The Geskani must survive. The Geskani must prosper. The Geskani must be powerful. Additionally, we’ve received a signal from a nearby system. It’s close, but the signal has taken a long time to get here. I recommend investigating.”

*****

“All ships target the two largest vessels!” Zuro transmitted into the fleet-wide communicator. The casualties of the Geskani were mounting. Though Fallen do not fear death, they do try their utmost to avoid it, something instilled doubly into military Fallen by the government. The Geskani Fleet launched another barrage, annihilating two more of the enemy vessels.

When the battle seemed to be going in the Geskani favour, disaster struck. One of the few remaining hostile ships launched a missile that slammed into one of the lightly armoured parts of one of the Geskani ships. The explosion propagated through the decks, reaching the Rip Drive, causing the vessel to violently self destruct, the Rip Drive launching itself to an unknown point in the galaxy. The shock from the sudden Rip disabled five of the nearby Geskani ships, knocking them out of the battle. The Geskani counter-attack was brutal. Though only three craft remained operational, their subsequent barrage destroyed four enemy ships, leaving one single enemy vessel to face the Geskani Fleet. The ship promptly fled the field, trying to escape the wrath of its now numerically superior foe. Zuro wasn’t having any of it. If that ship escaped, it could bring back more. It was important to destroy it. The Geskani aren’t known for their mercy.

Zuro personally took control of one of the largest guns on his ship. He carefully aimed it, and fired at what seemed to be a weak point on the fleeing ship. As the alien FTL drive began to start, it was hit by the weapon blast fired by Zuro, causing the FTL system to collapse and create a micro-star. The battle had been won.

“All ships, maintain high alert. Let’s scout out this system. Any disabled ships are to join in when their systems are back online.”

Zuro relaxed. Victory is a welcome feeling to a Fallen, and he planned to savour it.

Not much activity for this update, though I know several people mentioned lots of RL business keeping them occupied, so I won't sweat it. I'm starting the update now, but I'll still take stories and orders until it's posted and try to work in anything new. I'm going to do some minor NPCing as I see fit, but I won't be doing anything significant, so don't expect your folks to progress very far without you!

To everyone who has written stories in the past two weeks, thank you! I'm really enjoying them a lot, and I think it really makes this setting feel alive! :)

UPDATE FIVE
Buzzing...

The entity identified as "One" scours its recent discovery, consuming raw materials from celestial objects in-system, expanding its cellular population. Meanwhile, the Amoeba home world attempts to further improve conditions and repair the damage done by One's departure, though the ecosystems remain fragile and it takes the entirety of the remaining population to prevent a total collapse.

The Bako Tellians channel resources steadily into their new colony world of Obra, taking advantage of the lush biosphere and plentiful resources. Meanwhile, their exploration of the cosmos continues in sector H/H, where a considerably less worth-while system is located, though despite its lack of comparison to Obra, it presents a bounty of mineral resources that offer a potential to be harvested. The new system, as yet unnamed, contains twin red giants circling each other, blasting radiation and heat all about the system, leaving the two small, rocky planets with little water and no atmospheres. A large gas giant orbits at a considerable distance, host to a swarm of small asteroids caught in its gravity well.

On Distopterus, the hive runs into a resource shortage as it continues to work on the Hive Ship, unable to progress much further without compromising the ship's sustainability. Near the end of the year, a new mine is prospected and digging begins, though it will be some time before this discovery truly pays off for the completion of the great vessel.

The nearby colony of Nekopterus continues to eke out a living, the small micro-hives still struggling with each other over resources, territory and workers, though there are no significant conflicts as yet. Several Thinkers coordinate their efforts to modify the remains of their colonial vessels into breeding chambers where they might manage to spawn new members of their slowly dwindling society.

The Geskani exploration of the galaxy continues to be quite interesting. The devastated and irradiated alien ruins in the coreward system are settled with a small outpost, mostly dedicated to archaeological and scientific study, though it also supports a new industry of salvage operations around the system. Back on Ges, the Fallen reorganize the social structure slightly to prepare for a greater militarization of the space program, anticipating a future of galactic chaos and warfare. In fact, within a short time after their departure from the ruined system, the Geskani exploration fleet locates a system of moderate economic interest that also happens to possess another alien fleet, already in the process of surveying the system. What will come of this meeting is unknown, but assuredly the crew of the Geskani fleet does not forget their last encounter with an alien race.

A massive exploration endeavor is undergone by the Hletho people, sending scouts in all directions from their home world. In the Hlethan home sector, I/E-Top reveals a slightly habitable, moderately productive system, including a planet just outside of the habitability zone for the red giant host star, leaving it icy and lifeless... or is it? Further study shows evidence that, following particularly active volcanic cycles, sub-surface ice liquifies and flows on the surface, carrying with it a very small variety of incredibly simple native organisms that often find themselves dwelling in aquifers underground or trapped in ice sheets just under the surface dust. This planet's atmosphere would be capable of supporting Hlethan life if accompanied with filtration masks and environmental suits. The system bearing the Galactic Standard Designation of I/E-Bottom harbors less interesting worlds, mostly barren rocks circling a red giant that is slowly seeping into a white dwarf. This system also contains a brown dwarf star in its outer reaches, which merits some study to those interested in star formation. In sector J/E-Left, a system is located that seems to have failed to truly form, the red dwarf star in its center shining bleakly over the hundreds of belts of small rocks, dust and dwarf planets. A few of these tiny worlds orbit close enough to the star to carry a small amount of heat and provide some very faint measure of natural habitability there, though any form of life attempting to live on the surface of these worlds would need a lot of help surviving. The fourth system explored by Hlethan scouts is in sector J/D-Left, and what they find there is a startling series of goings-on. At first glance, the system appears dead and lifeless, until further investigation finds ruined cities and destroyed environments on just about every world orbiting this otherwise promising yellow-orange star. Further study detects various vessels wandering about the system, traveling from derelict space stations to blasted planets, firing upon each other as well as targets on planetary surfaces. Even closer inspection shows that some of these ships are not the same, and in fact, appear to be two distinct groups of aliens. The one group seems to be far smaller, holding together in a single fleet on the other edge of the system, while the other group is traveling from world to world, derelict to derelict, firing wildly at each other with very little obvious pattern or reason. The final realization is that the smaller group is carefully approaching, while a gathering of ships from the larger group are fast encroaching on the scout, proceding with the same hostile intent that they appear to approach each other with.

The Ivking home world of Halvalla finds itself pocked with massive craters as the reigning powers-that-be turn to thermonuclear weapons as the solution to the barbarian attacks. Several population centers in the barbarian territories cease to exist, as well as particularly large groupings of barbarian forces. Little remains of Ivking civilization at this point, with most of the population displaced and war-weary, most of the cities in ruins or no longer existant, and no sign of an end coming for this struggle even still.

In the farthest reaches of the galaxy, the Kants find themselves possessed with a wanderlust as their population further decentralizes. New colonies appear as roaming bands of Kants settle in explored systems, while two new systems are explored as well. In sector B/G, a dismal system is found with only moderate resources, though the explorers still find interest in this place as they poke about the nooks and crannies of the many small, rocky bits floating about the white dwarf parent star. Meanwhile, on the opposite edge of Kant space, explorers find a largely worthless system, mostly consisting of planetary debris and a small gas giant. However, they soon realize that they have made another discovery: a massive vessel lurches out of the shadow of the gas giant, appearing on sensory system so suddenly that few of the Kants have time to react. Those that were familiar with the events in interstellar space a few years back recognize the configuration of the vessel, and the ensuing swarm of small fighter craft announces that they have encountered the same race that had slaughtered an exploratory expedition previously. Invigorated by hatred, the Kants launch themselves into battle, though it is they who take the first losses. With so little combat experience, the Kants actually find themselves taking two losses for every kill they make, and the battle soon becomes a grim sight indeed. One of them attempts an escape, though with damage to his suit, she doesn't make it far before the power systems overload, leaving her vapor to join the dust fields of the system. The remaining Kants flee soon after, successfully departing the system and heading back for home, with no sign of the aliens following them. As they made their first rest stop to cool their FTL systems, they discussed revenge...

Despite the rumblings of social unrest lying beneath the surface of Kekeji society, the stalled space program gets back on track. A new colony is founded at C/C-Bottom, largely consisting of mining companies and research firms. The exploration of the cosmos continues for the Kekeji, their ships traveling both spinward and antispinward along the two galactic arms they now occupy. Interestingly enough, the Kekeji make first contact this year; not once, but twice! In sector B/C-B, a fairly unassuming system is discovered that contains a life-bearing planet. Civilization is primitive here, barely beyond stone age technology, with tribal groupings based on complex family trees warring in the jungles and forests over territory and food. There is little to note about these people, other than the fact that much of their society is in a state of disorder and they are largely stagnant in terms of progression and development; being so small, they must even still worry about large predators as much as they must worry about opposing tribal groups. Whether or not the Kekeji will involve themselves with these people is as yet undetermined. Meanwhile, on the opposite side of Kekeji space, a far more imposing force is discovered. A fully developed star system is discovered that contains a civilization with low-level space faring technology, and yet, colonial and resource harvesting operations throughout that system are so highly efficient and productive that the Kekeji, at first, believe it to be a race of machines. Inspection of the out-lying colonies in the system show that, in fact, a biological race occupies these worlds, these perfectly symmetrical colonies and space stations. It isn't long, of course, before they are greeting with several warning shots (at least, that is the intention; the interpretation might be something entirely different) from a native fleet of very efficient-looking vessels. While they do not seem any more powerful than the Kekeji, they are nonetheless on "home ground" (so to speak) and are clearly standing firm on that ground.

The Lelinthian race finds greater unity in its stance against "inferior" alien species, and the belief that order must be brought to this galaxy spreads rapidly amongst them. The Culud are further organized as a result, and substantial resources are swept into a militarization effort, with thousands of young Culud entering combat training camps every day, while thousands more produce new military hardware for the eventual purposes of ground warfare. A new fleet is built and launched, entirely geared towards military action and the carrying of Culud soldiers to enemy planets. While they do not know for certain that any alien species in this galaxy is a threat (and, in fact, the Satellians appear to be quite the opposite), they do know that only chaos and strike will reign if they do not assert themselves as the masters here. Feelings of Lelinthian superiority hit another high when a new system is explored (J/D-L), bearing some manner of warlike species. The planets there lie in ruins, their environments wasted and lifeless, while dozens of ships wander from site to site, showing very little order to their actions, lashing out at each other with brutal violence. It is almost immediate that these aliens approach the Lelinthian explorers, aggression saturating their every movement and action. The battle is brief, the damage taken is minimal. Studies of the debris show that very little biological matter existed in these alien craft, and further investigation would have been conducted if it were not for another presence arriving in-system. A single vessel of unknown alien design appeared at the edge of the system, and the native aliens immediately set out to attack them. The Wardens of this fleet engage in a brief discussion and agree that these new aliens must be investigated, for if a vassal can be formed, then it shall be so. Meanwhile, the fleet engaged with studying the Satellian home system disembarks with little subtlety, and soon after they arrive in system J/C-B, finding very little of worth.

The Nhroaat SsKraed finally land their first colony, quite a distance from home, though it is a colony nonetheless. As the Nhroaat society stagnates back on the homeworld, their industry does not seem affected, instead booming as the possibilities of more celestial expansion become fully realized. Another system is explored, revealing several small, barren worlds with nothing to offer besides mineral resources. Two large gas giants reside in the outer system, swarming with asteroidal moons, but otherwise, little is of note in this place.

Satellian traders finalize their deals with the nearby Snud people, and cargo craft come and go between Hmmaiaa and Sneed on a regular basis. Further technical improvements are made, particularly in the fields of defensive military equipment, much of which draws from several strange and varied Snud designs. New ships are built, outfitted with these devices integrated into the vital systems, as well as general improvements to functionality and sustainability. The out-dated fleet that had made contact with the Lelinthians aborts its retrofit and travels to the garden world in sector I/C-B, settling a research outpost on the surface, while its more valuable components are shipped back to the fleetyards to be used in other vessels. The fleet that was previously occupied with the Snud departs Sneed and heads on its exploratory way, traveling to system H/C-B and finding worlds rich in mineral resources, though mostly devoid of habitability. A few weeks into the survey, the upgraded sensory systems detect the arrival of an alien fleet of unknown origin...

The Seipas Yag continue to struggle with the recent coup, and unrest returns to the streets as the military police continue to maintain order. No significant violence has arisen, but the new leadership grows ever more concerned with domestic affairs. Despite this, efforts are made to lessen the burden on Yuynemel, the home world, by exploring the system in sector D/B-B. Unfortunately, this system offers next to nothing in the ways of habitability, though its mineral resources attract the interests of mining companis back home. Another fleet is produced in the shipyards, keeping the populace employed and hopes of stellar expansion up, or at least, that is the intention.

The Snuds have been celebrating quite a bit since the majority of them woke up from hibernation, and the wealth of alien goods coming in from the Satellians is proving even more satisfying than they could have hoped. Already, new designs are leaving the factory floors and demand for Satellian-inspired goods continues to rise. Stocks go up a fair amount.

Spoiler GALACTIC MAP :

RACE NAME: Murglers

APPEARANCE: Murglers are small, roughly 3 feet in height (~1 meter) and generally weigh about 35 pounds (~16 kilograms). They are humanoid in body structure, with two arms and two legs, and are very furry, often appearing as a round puff-ball with limbs. They have two large eyes that are fairly sensitive to light and are best suited to the nocturnal life-style they lead. Murglers have prehensile tails that average at about two feet in length.

CIVILIZATION NAME: None.

LOCATION: "Mor" in system B/C-B

HISTORY: There isn't much to say. For thousands of years, the Murglers have lived in complex family groupings that vie for territory and food, generally in the more heavily wooded regions of Mor. A few times in their history has progress been made toward a more civilized life, though every time that infant civilization has collapsed for one reason or another.

CULTURE: Murglers live in large family groups with complex mating arrangements that often result in in-breeding, though there are far more non-related matings that result in fully successful offspring. They live in clusters of small nests in the trees to keep away from predators, though if they are inhabiting a non-wooded area, they generally build burrows or inhabit high caves. Many religions exist amongst the tribes, often either worshipping the stars or the leading predators in the region. There is no true economy.

GOVERNMENT: None.

DOMESTIC POLICY: None.

XENOPOLICY: Fear is most likely, though curiosity and adoration is possible.

RACE NAME: Phleghesh

APPEARANCE: Phleghesh are blue in color, though from time to time there is an odd purple one, which seems to be recessive and doesn't often pass on in the gene pool. They are, more or less, large invertibrate slugs, averaging two feet in length and about fifteen pounds in weight. They do not see, but rather, feel their surroundings; they are coated in tiny hair-like sensory organs that pick up vibrations in the air and ground. They breath, drink and eat by absorbing materials through their skin. They speak to each other by emitting squishy noises from folds in their skin.

CIVILIZATION NAME: Phleghmaharash Ssssshh

LOCATION: "Hurglsh" in system C/I

HISTORY: It took a long, long time for the Phleghesh to develop any kind of space travel at all, and if it weren't for an odd artifact that was exposed in a cave following an earthquake, they likely never would have. Through worship and adoration of this artifact, the Phleghesh seemed to intuit several new technological advancements, as if suddenly struck with new ideas that had never dawned on them before. It was difficult for them to construct any of these devices, but the more they managed to assemble, the easier it became. No longer did they need to soak up materials from swamps, for they learned to create algae farms in controlled environments. No longer were they eaten by flying carnivores, for they learned to build shelters. After many thousands of years of being exposed to the artifact, it seemed to have selected a Chosen of the Phleghesh, a young slug named Lshlshush, who somehow became integrated with the object. She learned much, and spread this knowledge to the others, and within a few more centuries they had devised machines that could be interacted with by feel, and great technologies that gave them lives of comfort and ease. Eventually, they took to the stars and began exploring, finding strange new worlds, and later traveling the stars. They voyaged in large Arks that carried hundreds of smaller craft, each piloted by a single Phleghesh, from which they explored these new places and settled new homes. Once, recently, they detected the faint presense of traveling vessels nearby to one of their colonies, and so they decided to investigate. Strange mechanical creatures traveled with ease in the void, and out of fear, the Phleghesh decided to attack. After their victory, they salvaged what they could of the alien machines, only to learn that they contained living beings. This was perceived as a threat, and so the Phleghmaharash Ssssshh was formed to unify the Phleghesh efforts in space toward a common goal of security and dominance over these bizarre alien lifeforms. Another colony was founded, and more stars explored, and then contact again, resulting in another victory. It was becoming apparant as to where these beings lived, but the Phleghmaharash Ssssshh was uncertain how to proceed. Only time will tell, at this stage...

CULTURE: Not much. Most Phleghesh keep to themselves, only coming together to mate or work on new projects. They are a diligent people, though not very creative, and so they have relied on what the artifact presented to them even to this day. While the artifact has since eroded and collapsed into a heap of metallic debris, it is still revered as a divine oracle and source of wisdom, and many believe that the artifact has passed on its essence into the Phleghesh as a species and thus is no longer needed as a physical object.

GOVERNMENT: The Phleghmaharash Ssssshh controls and directs all resources in the Phleghesh civilization, and makes any decisions that affect the species as a whole, though otherwise they interact little with the people in any direct fashion. Leaders are chosen by election and consist of a council of knowledgeable individuals that specialize in different fields.

DOMESTIC POLICY: They don't really deal with their own people much, unless it is a matter that concerns the whole of the species. Typically, they are a very free and uncontrolled society, except in the cases of stellar exploration and the dawning concepts of warfare.

XENOPOLICY: Very, very negative. Aliens scare the Phleghesh and, most would agree, are to be killed on sight.

RACE NAME: Undroth

APPEARANCE: If an Undroth were standing still, you might think it was a boulder, but if you accidently woke it up it would stow you in a backpack and then go work in a mine or a factory somewhere. Undroth are nearly 8 feet in height (~2.4 meters) and typically weighs over 600 pounds (~272 kilograms). Their skin is a stony grey flecked with black and brown, and is very thick, similar to a rhinoceros hide in many ways. They are somewhat square-ish in form, their stubby legs keeping their bodies low to the ground, their bulky arms nearly reaching their feet. They are humanoid in design, with two arms and two legs, two large, black, forward-facing eyes on their lumpy heads, two ear holes on each side, a flat, wide nose with a single nostril running fully along the bottom. Their mouths are large, though their lips are thin and barely noticeable. They have large, flat teeth that are good for grinding up plants and such.

CIVILIZATION NAME: Undroth Imperial Legacy

LOCATION: Planet "Ux" in system D/C-L. Ux is a very rugged world, having had substantial geologic activity in its past, leaving behind countless jagged mountain ranges. Between these mountains are lush valleys teeming with fairly unique ecosystems, with very few species existing in more than one valley, and only two species that can be found across the entire world: the Undroth and a large predatory avian-like species called Guffs.

HISTORY: Six hundred galactic standard years ago, the Undroth were a collective of fragmented states that dwelled in mountain strongholds, warring with each other over the farmable valleys between them. Over the centuries, these strongholds gradually became more and more united as the Undroth shifted philosophically to a viewpoint of unity, duty and progress. It was only in the last hundred years that they managed to achieve space flight, and only in the last five years have they developed the stable capacity of warping space to allow the circumvention of relativity. Being a slow and methodical race, they have only explored one other star system, settling it steadily and focusing on maximizing productivity there before they move on.

CULTURE: Undroth care for each other deeply these days, and will go out of their way to help another Undroth with difficult or menial tasks. Death is accepted, if it is a result of old age; otherwise, even complete strangers will feel upset for the premature loss, though they don't quite express it and rather will do what they can to prevent it from happening to anyone else. Thus, Undroth medical technology is actually fairly advanced compared to the rest of their sciences, for many an Undroth has succumbed to illness and inspired others around him or her to pursue medical studies. The Undroth also believe in safety, first and foremost, and as a result their technology is layered with protection mechanisms and fail-safes, all in an effort to minimize job-related unjuries and deaths. The Undroth worship a spirit that they believe exists within their whole species, and that any alien species they encounter will be possessed of a different spirit; this has lead to the popular idea that aliens, if encountered, are to be kept at bay due to the risk of spiritual pollution that might corrupt or kill off the Undroth race, or cause the extinction of a neighboring species. They certainly do believe in aliens, because they have no reason to assume that they are alone in the universe. They just don't want anything to do with those aliens, not ever, because they want to be left alone. Also, everything in Undroth culture is made big; ships are big, homes are big, cities are big, space stations are big, mines are big, factories are big, and so on.

GOVERNMENT: The Undroth are ruled by spiritual leaders who guide the directions that the Undroth people take, making sure that all is done efficiently and that all Undroth are cared for. The spiritual leaders have many administrative underlings that take care of all the finer details for them.

DOMESTIC POLICY: Undroth must be cared for, and order must be maintained. The Undroth must prosper and suvive, and must be content at all times.

XENOPOLICY: Aliens are to be kept at a distance, for the spiritual essence of the Undroth cannot be tainted by external ideals and feelings.

Amoeba Orders

- Drop off a few hundred amoeba on the most inhabitable world with copies of the genetic material of all life on the amoeba homeworld. They are to create another garden world like my original planet before the war.

-Investigate the Kekeji homeworld, showing no hostile intentions. First attempt at communication will be with pheromones, if that fails one of the Kekeji will be 'possessed' (that is a specialised amoeba colony will highjack its CNS) to act as an interpreter.

-If the Keleji attack us we will destroy them. I will raise a point now so there is no arguement later. The main mass of organic matter in the One is unspecialised cells waiting to either repair damages structures or create new ones, be they organic (the acid cannons) or inorganic (the laser stolen from the crashed space ship).

-Continue reconstruction of homeworld.

OOC: I was going to write a story but a combination of laziness and genunie lack of time prevented this. I will write a story after the update promise.

Sorry, I'm not really at a point where I can work this into the nearly-finished update (all I have left to do is finish a couple more write-ups and then proof-read, so barring any interruptions, it'll be posted soon). Also, we need to figure out something better to do with One, because as it stands, it completely defies the stat system that every other player is associated with. For now, One is consuming raw materials in the system it stumbled into last update.

Well, anyway, I've run out of time tonight, but I'm definitely going to have it finished by tomorrow. My brain is slowly turning to sludge, because I actually NPC'd a lot of activity around parts of the galaxy. I need to come up with a few new NPC races, which is the main hurdle to get over. I'll definitely be done tomorrow, though I might take it home with me tonight and finish it there instead.

Use the Startraveler Rhetho to start a colony in the system of Sethkhad, building a small contained settlement on the world of Haefar. While in gameplay terms this means that the ship will be gone, I would like to think that it has merely landed some modules on Haefar and now serves as a ferry between Haedkhad and Sethkhad systems.

The second inhabitable planet, Joliat, will be settled at a later date.

Use 1e to go towards various medical and technological research to deal with this new disease, and to improve practical health-related technology as a whole.

Send the Startraveler Tharaez corewards, from I,E to H,E.

Send the Startraveler Zoroth voidwards and rimwards, from I,E to J,D

Send the Startraveler Hraef spinwards, from I,E to I,F.

By exploring in these direction, we hope to discover the quality of planets in various densities of space, to determine our paths for future colonization of the galaxy.

Sorry, too far along the update to really make those changes, Iggy. I will say this, however, that what I NPC'd for you is pretty close (though not the same, for sure) to what you asked for.

Alright! Sorry about the late orders, I've had a wicked pile of homework to head through lately.

No sweat :) I wouldn't mind, if I hadn't already written mostly everything in the update, but it would involve re-writing a bunch of stuff, which I definitely don't feel like doing ;)

Well, that means excitement's coming my way. :) Hope to see the update soon, I'm working on a little story describing the ships of the Hlethan fleet right now.

Early Startravelers of the Hletho

The earliest superluminal vessels, commonly known to the Hletho as ‘Startravelers’, are fascinating in their uniqueness and variety. Huge effort was put into them by what were often vast collections of clades and organizations, and each vessel was instantly recognizeable. All of them bore the distinctive styles of their constructors, often in eclectic mixtures, but each vessel was supremely capable, given the technology of the time. A single, comparatively small vessel was packed tightly with a grand collection of modular technology, integrated into a single united, largely-mechanized framework.

While the idea of artificial intelligence had never occurred to the Hletho, they still developed many programs for their ‘mechanical minds’ which, when coupled with their preternatural memories, rendered such developments unnecessary. Thus, it took only a legful of Hletho, with particularly diverse skill sets, to run an entire vessel.

Despite the uniqueness of each ship, the designs of each were still very distinctly Hlethan. Pale metal ribs, traveling along the length of the vessels, contrasted with darker substructure beneath. Tenuous jump mechanisms extended out from the fronts of each Startraveler, while great, cylindrical propulsors were placed around them with a strange, but still recognizable type of symmetry. The combination of a curved shape contrasted with hard edges is present in many of the designs, though the flowing shape of the vessels are frequently interrupted with what appears to outsiders to be little consideration- although it would be more accurate to simply attribute this to the Hletho sense of aesthetics.

It was seven hundred twenty eight thousand, six hundred and ninety two years since the dawn of the first great migrations out of the old world, where the Hlehto realized for the first time that there was life outside of the small continent that they had called home since time immemorial. It was five thousand, five hundred and twelve years since the conclusion of the Sea Wars, where Sahlo led the disparate forces of the world, united against the Southeast, bringing about the downfall of the Grand Powers of Jetha, Pren and Rheth. It was three thousand, two hundred and nine years since the first rockets escaped the atmosphere of Thaej- and now, the exploration of space was finally beginning.

hlethoexploration.png

Rhetho

The earliest vessel to carry a Hletho at superluminal speeds, the Rhetho was designed by a collection of clades from a wide variety of regions around Thaej. Fusing Sahlon elegance and Hridani practicality, and possessing a crew from Hridan, Hitheth and Bres, the Rhetho is truly a widely-rooted venture. 82 meters in length and 18 in breadth, a tetrad of Hridani-engineered conventional thrusters propel this vessel through the void, while a Sahlon ‘Trident’ array at the front instigates the compaction event required to alter a column of space in front of the vessel, dramatically reducing the distance between itself and its destination.

The beauty of the machine is in its modularity. The Rhetho, while requiring only a tiny crew, has many modules which can be adapted to probe support bays, passenger compartments, or even, theoretically, weaponry- although as the Hletho had no conception of alien intelligences, the idea at the time of the ship’s creation was as preposterous as weaponizing toast.

Tharaez

128 meters in length and 25 in width, the Tharaez was the first vessel designed and manufactured exclusively in Sahlo, and it shows. Grand and sweeping in form, with grand, subtly curving ribs tracing along the length of it shull, the vessel was the second superluminal craft launched out of the orbital shipyards above Thaej. While a somewhat less efficient design than the Rhetho, whose launch preceded its completion by a little under a year, the Tharaez was designed for more comfortable, longer-range compactions. Its superluminal apparatus is of a sturdier design, and has undergone longer testing, and this vessel remains debatably the most advanced technological creation of the Hletho to date, and a tribute to Sahlon engineering talent.

Hraef

The brainchild of the Hithethan Aeronautics Engineer Lico Chaeh, the Hraef is a small, sturdy vessel with a unique design, developed independently of previous Hlethan Startravelers. Utilizing a tiny compaction array and a high-density shield on the front of the vessel, the Hraef propels itself at sublight speeds through a unique ‘corona’ system, firing a ring of thrusters based in the back of the shield. Constructed in Hitheth and Hrolaton, the nascent industries established in the great undertaking that was this vessel have helped to lift many regions out of a general ennui which has engulfed them for centuries.

Zoroth

The pride of Jetha, the Zoroth is the most recent large vessel to launch from the shipyards of Thaej, following the Hraef by only a matter of days. Strange, squat, and gangly at the same time, the design of this vessel hearkens back to the lost golden age of the southeast, bearing the rough shape of one of the sailing ships of the all-too-recent past. A great keel-like structure juts from the bottom of the craft, while the great engine casements rear up like a sail caught in the soft morning breeze, and the spherical bridge thrusts boldly out the forefront of the vessel, gazing ever into the future...

Zir

While the great feats of Hlethan stellar architecture may get all of the attention, this small workhorse is always deserving of attention and appreciation. A remotely-controlled drone craft, this machine has been involved in orbital construction, mining experiments, scouting, and a myriad of other tasks. It was a Zir-type drone which first tested the compaction drive, and a collection of these craft rest on board every Hlethan ship, ready to be equipped for whatever task they come across. While other models have been tested, the Zir has remained the tried and true model upon which all of this elabourate infrastructure has been developed, for well over a century, and probably for many years to come.

Update: Up!
Stats: Up!
Map: Up!
NPCs: Coming soon! 2/3 finished! Up!

Any problems that you guys have or notice or whatever, lemme know! It took me a little extra time to get this one in order, just because of the three new NPC races, but I think it's all handled. Stories will come soon (I hope!), and in the meantime, I know a couple guys that need to get crackin' on a first contact ;)

Also, next story/order deadline is December 6th!

OOC: I second Lord_Iggy's comment! Love the new races!

Is it just my imagination, or is there a common threat of autonomous kill-ships roaming the galaxy?

IC: Somewhere in sector H/C...

'Defensive formation, Fleet Captain?'

'Hmm... No sudden gestures. Not yet. Ahh... Initiate protocol #12...'

A constellation of purple lights appeared on a control panel.

'Defensive systems are ready. Internal combat drones are mustering, calling auxiliary crew to rally points.'

Perhaps we are suddenly thankful for those Snuddian armament upgrades, the Fleet Captain thought to himself.

'Hmm... Slight error with one of the down-cone intercept cannons...'

'Yes I see. I'm setting self-destruct countdown now, as a precaution. Recommend Fleet does the same...'

A countdown to anti-matter oblivion was suddenly hovering in mid air. There were some wiggles of nervousness from the younger crew.

'Confirming unidentified craft. Hmm... they seem to be hot and armed.'

'Yes... But do not appear to be Lelinthian... Hmm... Have we begun greeting signal?'

'Ah... Not yet... Error in broad-wave comm system... Collaborating auxiliary broadcast systems and re-routing, ah... With your approval...'

'I approve...' And perhaps we should buy our entire fleet from the Snud, the Fleet Captain added, un-spoken. He then wiggled out of his acceleration harness and drifted closer to one of the 3D-projectors, which was showing a fuzzy image of the approaching craft. They were strangely angular in appearance, though that could have been due to an error in the optical sensors. They were surrounded by a blizzard of high-energy warnings.

The Fleet Captain bowed his front end toward the image, an entirely illogical and idle gesture designed to demonstrate his calmness and command of the situation.

'Greetings, cousins...'

Present on the bridge was a specialist in mental and emotional analysis - a necessary precaution since the Lelinthian contact, according to The Agreement.

'I hereby wish to express a feeling of mild discomfort, bordering on alarm', said she.

'Hmm... Noted...'

MESSAGE END.

These kill ships are the remnants of civilisations wiped out by kill ships.

In Sector H/C

"Rip complete, Admiral. Systems are normal, nothing is malfunctioning, all our equipment will be online in a few seconds."

Admiral Zuro reclined in his seat. He had become the Admiral of the Geskani races only exploratory fleet in service, though more were planned. He had also been present at every xeno-battle the Geskani had engaged in, and had acquitted himself well in all of them. He was, simply put, one of the most experienced Geskani in the galaxy when it came to space exploration.

"Admiral, our scanners have picked up multiple vessels in the system," chirped his 2IC. "What action do we take?"

Zuro's antennae perked and began to rattle softly, a typical show of heightened alertness or hostility. "Arm all weapons. Get the fleet into an aggressive formation with three reserve craft in the rear. Do not fire yet." Zuro said with the authority befitting his position.

The fleet quickly assembled itself as the armaments of the various ships came online and locked a target. The alien fleet seemed to be forming into a more defensive formation, but at a slower pace then the Geskani, almost as if the situation wasn't urgent for them. Zuro was confused by this. Speed was one of the most important traits in a Geskani and these ships had yet to show it in any degree. This truly was a strange galaxy.

"Bring up the fleet on viewscreen." he transmitted calmly. The opposing fleet appeared, with individual ships able to be seen easily. They seemed almost cobbled together and frail, though there were signs that they had been improved on or changed. There was a great deal of activity in them, though it all seemed very calm, there was no urgency to it.

"Admiral, we are receiving a message. It seems to make an image of some sort." chirruped the Communications Officer. A recent addition to the crew, he seemed excited by the concept of aliens. Zuro raised his hand and it appeared on the screen near the image of the alien fleet while the bridge computer ran a number of checks on it.

"It's strange. Definitely very alien. I'm surprised they haven't opened fire yet though. Move the fleet towards the aliens. Stay at a steady and purposeful speed. If any of the alien ships attempts to leave the system, destroy it. If the alien fleet responds, attack. Open the landing bay on the right side of this ship. Flash lights around it and try to angle any lights we can at it. They have to have something small enough to fit inside it, we make them big for a reason. I want to know what these things are."
