SLYNES - Swirly Lights Yonder, a Never Ending Story

Okay one more question than I'll be able to post my race: How much time does each update cover? I was wondering because I was thinking about how to weave my race into the picture as a space-faring race in a way that made sense. If each update represents a long time, then I could say that my race just recently gained the knowledge of space flight, but if updates represent a short time then I'll have to think of something else.

Thanks Bil for answering all my questions so far!:D

Those are just a few, for now. Working on digging out the rest.

Updates cover the course of a year. It's a pretty brief amount of time, really, but considering that I wanted there to be a lot of character development and stuff between updates, it needed to be somewhat short so that you don't end up with a new character every update or something like that.

Departure from Sneed

Wahano Mo led the Startraveler Rhetho into the abyssal space beyond the outer reaches of the Sanukhad system, mulling over the parting words of the departed Sanudo passenger. The creature had been excessively fascinated with the idea of profit. The focus was beyond anything Mo had ever encountered before- indeed, it was obsessive, perhaps even unhealthy.

How could a society run in a system where focus was made on receiving the rights to be reciprocated, but not the reciprocation itself? The idea was a pointless middle step that seemed to be more important than the actual ends. At any rate, he was relieved to have simply settled with Vrun that the alien’s donations were equivalent to the cost of transport. Mo was pleased with reciprocation, but would have been content to leave without it- his guest’s regular advice on transferring the Hletho system into a ‘currency’-based economy had been offputting. The Sanudo seemed to be a rather intrusive kind, although at the very least they were quite sociable.

Interesting...

Mo looked back to see one of the crew returning from the storage compartments to the control room.

“Daeja, have you completed the analyses of the supplies?”

“Yes. They’ve got a variety of indigestible and toxic compounds... but they can be detoxified. I think their ideal use would be as basal paste for Thotha growth in the hydroponics.”

“Agreed. Now, Nahla, is our system survey complete?”

“Yes.” Was the curt response.

“Taesh dear, are the compaction capacitors charged?”

“Affirmative.”

“Fantastic! Jahn, engines?”

“We’ve exceeded the lower limit of compaction- we can jump at any time.”

“Then let’s get going.”

Several Snuddians, observing by telescope, saw the Ha-leto vessel suddenly thin out and extend, dramatically redshifting before snapping out of sight like a released elastic.

Sneed

Astronomer Gel peered through his telescope at the alien ship, having observed it for much of its time in-system. His duties were to glean some measure of knowledge about its hull structure by simple study alone, which meant that he was getting paid to look at it and write little notes, but otherwise, nothing productive would come of this.

A transport craft approached the alien ship, docked, and then the two vessels sat idle for quite some time. Finally, the transport departed again, resulting in resumed activity from the alien vessel. Before he was truly prepared for it, the ship stretched and warped and became a fine, metallic needle, barely noticeable in his telescoped view. Just as he thought he was getting a good grasp on where the ship was, it was gone.

Gel took his two top-forward eyes away from the viewers and made a simple note on his computer screen: "Faster than light system looks cool." Time to get back to staring at stars and distant galaxies and things. Sigh.

After pondering for a while I think I finally came up with an interesting race. I will try to finish it and post it up ASAP, before you update Bil, so that my race can be included.

Tounis

Shelek Khatar was growing frustrated. These aliens did not appear to be intelligent enough to respond to the aural patterns. It was clear that they could hear it, as they reacted visibly to the sounds, but they otherwise seemed to only be capable of staring and emitting slight electrostatic fields. It was possible that these were some sort of colonial life-form, possibly making these a sort of "worker" class of being. In fact, it was equally as possible that the aliens were actually quite stupid, possibly a former servant race that subsumed the technology of their masters following some possible disappearance of that control mechanism, leaving these simple beings in the possession of advanced technology.

"Perhaps their arrogance will not allow them to communicate in kind?" suggested one of his aides, "They might not deem us worthy of a response."

"Possible," Khatar responded, "Let us return to the command ship. I must reflect."

His subordinates saluted him as he turned and re-entered the transport, followed by his entourage. The shuttle had been left in an active state, enabling it to lift off from the surface of this planet immediately. It traveled back to the command ship, under the careful attention of the Tellian fleet in-system, though they so far continued to remain silent in the fields of communication. Katar briefly considered that they might not have been prepared for this scenario in any fashion, though he believed it unlikely, given their technical state. Surely, they must just be stupid? Khatar thought of this matter very, very carefully.

Update is mostly done. I'm going to take a break and finish it later tonight.

@Frozen: If you can get a template up somewhat quickly, as well as a generic guideline for what you want your first set of orders to be, I'll add you into the update. Otherwise, you'll have to wait for next turn to actually start playing (though stories leading up to that are always welcome).

RACE NAME: Myzokan (translates to "spined one")

APPEARANCE: Myzokans are bipedal beings that average about 1.5 meters in height. Their skin is leathery, almost like many reptiles’ skin. Their heads are elongated and oval like, and they end in a pair of eyes, nostrils, and a mouth. They are omnivorous. The legs of a Myzokan are very muscular for their size, and this gives them the ability to leap fairly long distances when they want to. The legs end in scaled feet (the only place on their body to have scales) that have three sharp talons as toes. The hands are fairly large and have five digits.

Their distinguishing feature is their many spines protruding from the skin that are made of dense connective tissue. This makes them very similar to bones in that they are strong and yet lightweight. The spines start off almost non-existent on a new-born Myzokan, but they grow larger as the individual matures. The spines normally lie flat on the body, and while in this position that act almost like incomplete plating, providing moderate protection, but a series of small muscles can make the spines stand on end when they contract. This has led to many a Myzokan accidently extending their spines when they were agitated or tensed up. They also have a long, flexible, muscular, tail. The tail also has spines coming off it, but these spines are for the most part smaller than those on the rest of the body. These smaller tail spines are used for climbing purposes, and can even enable the strongest of Myzokan to hang from a tree by their tails.

Their internal framework is fairly light-weight to counter-balance any additional weight the spines add. Their respiratory and cardiovascular systems are fairly well developed, as are their senses. Their sight is only average, but their hearing and sense of smell are advanced. There are two sexes, male and female. The male fertilizes the female and then the female lays a batch of 1-3 amniotic eggs. The eggs are then watched over while by the parents while the embryos develop into young Myzokans.

CIVILIZATION NAME: The Kintesh Confederacy

LOCATION: C/E Top Dot

CULTURE: The Myzokan have always lived in clans, or many tribes put together, and this continues to this day. Family ties and relationships remains a very important aspect of everyday life. This stems back from when the Myzokans were mainly hunters. Hunting also, remains an important tradition to this day, and it is considered a rite of passage to adulthood to successfully hunt one of many dangerous indigenous species that remain on Kintesh. While hunting remains popular, the Myzokans also believe in the need to protect the environment and its life forms. They realize that if the environment ceased to exist there would be nothing left to hunt. It is thanks mostly to this attitude that the Kintesh remains a vibrant college of all sorts of plants, animals, and micro-organisms. Even with this, industry, in an environmentally friendly form, is beginning to flourish. One especially significant area of this is using genetically modified organisms to produce many materials. Not everyone agrees with this however; many argue in preserving each species’ “purity”.

Duty is the last main tenant of Myzokan life. At a young age, all Myzokans are taught their 5 Ds or duties: duty to oneself, duty to one’s family, duty to one’s tribe, duty to one’s clan, and duty to one’s people. Many Myzokans would consider it an honor to help out one’s neighbors. Though there are laws that make volunteering mandatory at various levels, they rarely have to be enforced because most Myzokans volunteer frequently of their own free will. This feature of society yet again originates from the Myzokan’s hunting background where they had to not only work together but rely on each other in order to survive.

Art of all sorts of forms exist in society. Painting, music, moving picture, etc. are all present. Architecture has blossomed into its own form of art of the years, specifically in integrating architecture into the environment without dominating it.

There are a number of different religions that exist. There are a few religions with multiple gods, and but most with only one. Currently the two most popular religions include worship to the God of “Life Force”, and the worship to a god that embodies many traits that are seen as beneficial to society. There used countless religions based around the elements, like fire, wind, etc. but as the science behind these forces were discovered over time these religions slowly died out.

GOVERNMENT: The government is a constitutional confederacy that has many regional government encompassed by on national one. The regional government is each clan that exists on Kintesh, which is at present 25. The clans are further divided into tribes that have power over local policy matters. These tribe leaders are usually the oldest Myzokan of the most influential family. All the tribes that make up a clan collectively vote for a clan leader, and then these clan leaders in turn select a council of five Myzokan they believe to be best suited to the job leading the people. The five councilers lead The Kintesh Confederacy make virtually all of the policy decisions that affect the planet nationally. A three-fifths vote is all that is required to enact any policy that is constitutional.

The Clans are still thought to have more power overall in the Kintesh Confederacy, but it is seen as a recent trend that more power has been shifting to the Council of Five (as the national leaders are collectively called). Some are fine with this, while others are very worried by these developments. The tribes also vote for the own local judges while the clans vote for regional judges; there are no national judges.

DOMESTIC POLICY: The government has set few restrictions on freedoms in general. There are many regulations in regards to the environment, but that is mostly the only area where that is the case. The national government has some regulations in regard to inter-clan trade and maintaining a national currency. As mentioned previously, there has been heated debate over the ethics of genetic manipulation, but this debate hasn’t resulted in any legislation as of this time.

The clans make many of their own regional laws involving all sorts of matters like education, illegal activities, criminal punishment, and welfare. The clans are also allowed to have their own state militias while the national government handles a national army.
XENOPOLICY: No standard for interactions with alien species has yet been set, so the only policy is caution. The Myzokan are willing to cooperate and trade with other species if they feel it is within their benefit, but their nature also lets them be ready for a fight if need be. Once engaged in a fight the Myzokan hunt their prey down mercilessly.

Here's a picture! (Note that the tail doesn't represent what I envision, it needs some work):

The Trader

Vorsa Bren carefully adjusted the landing beacon, directing the bulky Jahahunoun Landing Craft down towards the reception platform. With several high-pressure bursts of air to maintain stability and a few firings of its main rocket to slow the parachuting descent, the rocketlike shuttle touched down. Bren noted this on her console before rolling onto the rapidly-cooling platform.

A group of other Hletho working at the site were doing the same, as a door opened in the side of the rocket and the Jahahunouno pilot exited the craft, breathing in the fresh air of Haefar before gagging slightly at the fumes from the rocket’s exhaust. This one was an unfamiliar figure- a new trader. Larger than most, with a particularly tough-looking brown carapace. A set of four mechanical arms seemed to be grafted onto- and maybe even into- the figure’s back, and a strange set of goggles covered one of its sets of eyes.

“Welcome to Haefar, Trader... Hurronnue.” Spoke Bren into her translator, checking her console for the visitor’s name. A deep groaning noise emanated from a nearby set of speakers.

“Cheers, Helehho of Haefar. I have brought a shipment of my kinship’s sturdiest tunnelling equipment, which you can look at once it’s unloaded.”

“We are prepared to load the pre-agreed amount of processed metals in a short number of days - your arrival is sooner than we had expected.”

“I surfed the bubble-wake from one of the larger cargo barges bound for Haej- I’ll be happy to wait and explore your planet.”

“You are welcome to do so.”

Hurronnue turned around and used his mechanical arms to open a large compartment lower on his lander, and began to lift out parts of disassembled machinery. The Hletho workers scrambled around the much-larger figure, carrying away smaller items as the Jahahunoun’s mechanical arms removed them. Vorsa Bren sent a message to the mineral resource centre.

“Hello Sister Bae. How goes the processing of our latest order?”

“On schedule.”

“Good. Our partner in exchange has arrived early.”

“Interesting. I hope he is not of a sort to take umbrage of a small wait.”

“We shall see- I’m not familiar with this trader, but I suspect he will be quite content- these Jahahunoun seem to have a rather unfocused conception of time.”

“We shall see indeed.” I should be able to meet you at the surface at the end of four days with our shipment.”

“Excellent.” Bren closed off the communication, and then joined the workers in unloading the alien craft. In her head, she looked forward to meeting greeting another- her fourth- Satellian. One of the perks of her job, perhaps- they always made for interesting, is sometimes bizarre, conversation.

Overhead, beside the sky-dominating sibling planet of Joliat, Sethkhad shone brightly through the morning sky.

Alright, I updated my previous post with what should be the final draft of my race, though I'd be fine with some feedback or constructive critiscm if anyone has any.

We've got too many humanoid body plans here! Have you considered doing the same general idea but with a body plan other than 2 arms attached to the top of a torso, two legs attached to the bottom of a torso, and one head attached between and above the arms?

@Frozen: I think it's just fine. A non-humanoid body plan wouldn't be bad, but I'm just as guilty of using humanoid body-plans as anyone else. Keep it as you wish, unless you want to change it :)

@Omega: Sure, I'd be happy to have another player! The list of existing races is above, so skim through that as you please. If you want to take control of an existing NPC race, PM me about it, as some are off-limits and others would require my approval, of course. Welcome! :)
