SLYNES - Swirly Lights Yonder, a Never Ending Story

Great update!

Glad all my buisness went OK, and that I didn't have to face a massive Geskani attack after all. Now its like a cold war situation. Hopefully I can keep matching the Geskani fleet sizes and still have money left over...

I wonder if the Space Crystal might reach the Orindi homeworld just as my diplomatic cruiser arrives there :)

@Bil any chance of stats for the Vurdu? Did you ever describe their physical form, and if so what update was that (apologies I may have forgotten!)?

Iggy got as many paragraphs as I did sentences. Awesome! I'm writing this story by hand first, but be assured that it's on the way. I'm doing some personal character development with the Nekopterans. Hint: They are dealing with uninformed new consciousnesses entering the hive... children.

I might have mentioned something briefly, but I never went into detail. Essentially, the Vurdu are part of the Lelinthian civilization, so they generally don't need stats. I'll get a write-up at some point, maybe this weekend or something.

Response

“So the aggressive vessels have pulled back?

“That seems to be the case, yes.”

Dae Ro Phtan entered the room, seemingly fatigued from repeated grappling trips from her station in the sensors room to the captain's preferred location. A collection of odd electronic devices clattered as she entered the artificial gravity generated by the room's rotation.

“We've received a response. They seem to have figured out our language more effectively than our efforts.”

“Interesting. Play the message.”

“Certainly.” responded Phtan. “They seem to have sent several pieces of information. One seems to be a giant collection of words in their language, perhaps intended to elucidate their means of communication. No need to play that, but we're running it through our translators. The next is a video similar to our initial message depicting their cities and planet- these species are a rather interesting collection of aquatics, it would seem. They have a short spoken transmission in our language, and then... another long piece of audio information. I'm really not sure what to make of it, it might be an alternative language of some sort.

Captain Paila Sae leaned back in a depression in the floor of the Tharaez's viewing area as the audio-video transmission began to play.

“Welcome, Tharaez. This is the colony Kukukik of the Pohm nation Betik. We are most eager to begin a friendly relationship between us, a compact of the stars. You are cordially invited to land on our planet and tell us of your people, your culture, and your journeys. Again, welcome, Hletho.”

Simultaneously to this, the video was projected before the small assembly of Hletho. As the images expanded to show an entire planet, then faded out, so ended the spoken words, and the strange sound began. It was something like focus noise, rhythmic and filled with a strange array of shifting noises. Sae did not know what to make of it.

“Interesting... Phtan, run some analyses on that secondary noise, these... 'Pom' might use it as an alternative language... it is clearly of some amount of importance or relevance to this situation.”

“Will do sir.” The Sahlon technologist grinned and began tapping away at her carried console.”

“And prepare to transmit our next message.”

Greetings, Pom. We look forward to observing and interacting with your species in a more direct manner, and reciprocate your enthusiasm for friendship and sharing information. We will follow your directions towards a suitable site for contact, and note that contact between our vessels in space would be a more easily accomplished feat than depositing a lander on your primarily liquid surface.

Asteroid Pods

Finally, Galta, the exploration fleet sent out explore the galaxy for the Myzokan people had completed its madiean voyage.

"Captain, we have successfuly exited the wormhole. We made quite good time; my cursory analaysis makes it appear that the new wormhole drive allowed us to travel a good deal faster the the Visi Dyforn ever has."

"That is to be expected, considering that this fleet was more recently constructed, but still I am pleased."

Just then however an alert popped up on the officer's screen indicating an unidentified object had been detected nearby.

"It appears the sensor package works remarkibly well too. We're picking up erridatic movements from numerous small objects near the closest planet."

"Yes, indeed," the Captain hissed in annoyance. "What exactly could these things be?" he wondered. "Get them within visual range and focus our equipment on that area.

After a moment, the bridge officer responded with the requested information. "They appear to all be very small objects, and are all emitting heat. Our scans confirm that they are mechanical in nature. They look almost like little mechanical astroids only slightly bigger than you or I. To me this seems to suggest that they might be space robots of some type."

"Space robots?" the Captain questioned increduously with obvious distaste. "Why would some one make a robot when one could experience the comos in person? Has their been any signs of life detected? Maybe these are shuddles from a larger vessel somewhere nearby.

"I've already put someone on it," the officer confirmed. "Do you think these are of Capricocial design?"

"I personally don't know much about them, but from my knowledge I would say no."

There were silence for a few moments as the pair waited for incoming data to shed more light on the situation. By this point the Galta fleet had moved quite close to the cluster of 'shuddles'. Then the officer piped up, "Well, our preliminary scans show that their are indeed some signs of life with those tiny astroid pods. These signs don't match any signatures we know of however. Additionally, there aren't any larger vessels in the system as you suggested."

"Hmm." The Captain's spines stood up on end in deep thought as his tail swished back and forth in agitated excitement. "... In that case, its my guess that these pod beings must have had to abandon their vessels for some reason, likely a malfunction of some sort. This is probably another new space faring species that we have discovered just now, and I dare say that a good way to kick off a relationship is with an offer of help. Send a transmission offering assistance to these asteroid pod people. Hopefully those little things have enough room to hold an advanced translator to at least get the intent of our message."

"Beings of the Pods we, the Myzokans, greet you in the name of peace. It appears that something has happened to your main vessel and so should you acquire it we offer you shelter aboard ours. Please respond if you are able so that we can be certain that our message was received. Hopefully this contact will lead to a successful relationship between our two peoples."

I spam more stories soon!

@Bil what tech level and how much e do I need for a planet-eating super weapon? :)

Aiweh space ships are composed a curves. There is nothing completely straight within their vessels. Floors curve, ceilings curve, walls curve, hulls curve, command decks curve, and even rulers seems to have some curvy characteristics. If any Non-Aiweh would come into an Aiweh vessel, it would not be long until their mind would have been completely blown away by strange curves within the vessel and would crumple onto the floor gibbering "fhtagn."

Actually one might argue that this fact explains quite a lot about Aiweh psychology.

................

The crew of the expeditionary fleet stared coldly at the primitive aliens of the world below. An Aiweh equivalent of a raspy voice issued orders towards the other Aiweh on their first contact protocols. One of the crew tapped at his console.

"We are ready for broadcast, sir." it told the admiral.

Admiral did the Aiweh equivalent of clearing its throat, and then continued on with the same raspy voice...

"Dear natives. We wish you a favourable statistical outcome. We are Aiweh, explorers of this galaxy. We seek to study and catalogue alien life forms, observe their behaviour, and terminate all hostilities.

We come in peace, and thank you for your time."

"Do you think they will understand what we are saying?" One of the Aiweh asked.

"Nah." replied the admiral. "I don't think so."

It would seem that the Bako Tellians would have to give up on the idea of reclaiming Tounis. Though the planet itself would under normal circumstances be unlivible to the aquatic Bako Tellians, it had become a home to many. However, the Bako Tellians were once again no match for the forces of the Skul’agra.

Sadly, the story of Gao Supreme, ruler of Bako has come to an end. After twenty years of serving as head of the Bako Tellians the time for the Zemuto was to come. Zemuto is the event where Bako Tellians measure their pulses to determine who amongstthem has the strongest and will assume leadership positions and ultimately who will become Tellian Supreme. Zemuto went on, and eventually it was as expected and Gao Supreme was once again to assume the position of Tellian Supreme. However, something was different.

Zemuto has determined the leaders of the Bako Tellians before the great unification happened. Though it was not a way to find the “perfect leader” but it had become the perfect way to decide on one. And yet, Gao was not at peace with what many would consider his “destiny”.He did not believe that he could continue on as leader of the Bako Tellians in this bold new era he had launched the Bako Tellians into.
The Bako Tellians themselves had their reserves about another term of Gao as the Tellian supreme. Though it is hard for them to turn away from their nature, the race of Amphibious beings have now seen so much more than the water around them. Tall trees, endless deserts, and even the Skul’agra have changed their way of understanding. Knowing how vast the universe is, seemed to give the Bako Tellians a bit more outside perspective on just about everything.

Gao’s rule would go down into the archives as a momentous one. Using the outline for space travel that Zen Supreme the Tellian Supreme before him laid out, Gao was able to organize the first interstellar travels for the Bako Tellians. This led to a highpoint neverbefore seen within theBako Tellian society. However, he is also responsible for a good chunk of the population dying in the skirmishes with the Skul’agra over what some would say was a “pointless dirtball”, leading to one of the lowest points in Tellian society.

Nevertheless, Gao felt that he had done what he was meant to do and shouldn’t do more. “The tide is obviously against me right now. Leaderless, the Bako Tellians looked to different Tellians to see if they were up to assuming the task but the next three people in line were too horrified of the pressure and responsibility involved with the task, after some time passed the offer trickled down to Yea who is ranked 7th amongst Bako Tellians. She invited the special selection people into her home. Very formal she sat down, sat up straight, and asked them what business they had with her. They wasted no time and prepared to ask her if should like to lead the Bako Tellians for a little while. After which, she crossed her arms and said, “Gladly”

Yea is a tall slender Bako Tellian with light gray skin. Though not muscular, she has a strong build, her tail fin is long and has quite an elegant fan on the end of it. She is very attractive, and usually is seen wearing a royal blue rock rope around her right wrist, her reasons for doing so are unknown. She enjoys music. She is very polite and formal, but she does not take the time to candycoat her opinions on anything she has to say.

Her induction speech was a surprisingly short-winded affair filled with her promises to the Tellians. Though, it was odd. She mentioned nothing of trying to reclaim the lost planet, or engaging the Skul’agra at all. When it was over, Yea stepped down from her speaking platform and mingled with the spectators and answered questions. Several times she was asked “what about the Skul’agra?”. Each time she simply said, “ I think this whole thing started over an inability to communicate. Regardless I will make sure that the Bako Tellians make themselves heard because we will speak” Her response made Tellians question her motives were they planning an attack, or were they going to try and discuss business with the Skul'agra?

I know I said I'd write stories, but I just can't. I even set aside time to just sit in the student center and write stories, but I could come up with nothing that was really interesting. I apologize, hopefully I'll be able to come up with something at some point in the near future.

I'm going to push the deadline back an extra week, because I have deemed it so. You're all welcome to gripe, but I won't be paying attention thanks to Dorf Fort 2010. I guarantee that I will get sick of the initial release bugs soon, and then get on to writing things. Until then, I won't be.

DEADLINE FOR UPDATE FOURTEEN: April 18th!

EDIT: As for planet-killers, I'm imagining to Snud will be making one of those soon. Prepare for a galaxy-wide protection racket! :p

Disintegration

“Captain Maed Daego of the Viset-Class vessel Lhado Haebna reporting the disappearance of two Zir drones near our survey region|Investigating anomalous spatial activities|Running low on charge.”

“Greetings Captain, requesting clarification on disappearance|Please investigate this anomalous disappearance|Recharge after the following survey run.”

“The drones just up and stopped transmitting, no warnings at all|We're approaching the disappearance site now, we're not picking up any physical traces of the Zirs.”

On board the Lhado Haebna, Daego flicked his console to shut off the feed, and went back to the command room, where he gave an affectionate tap to Majid Reian, the vessel's co-pilot. She ran her arm down his back and laughed lightly.

“So, still haven't found anything?”

“Not a trace... I do not know what to make of it. It's like-”

“Mother in flames! The front!”

All about them, the metal and composite of the vessel was twisting, shattering, melting. Daego spun around and shoved Reian away , letting out a cry of pain as the terrible rending struck into his own body. Reian let out a cry of fear for her partner and pulled him further back into the ship, staring with horror as one of his segmented legs simply began to disintegrate, falling off in nauseating, semi-liquid splatters. An alarm began to go off on Reian's console- the fusion core's breach warning. The Hleko continued to pull Daego further back into the vessel, simultaneously attempting to address the insurmountable list of system failures assaulting her senses. Her mutilated Hlethen partner lay in shock, twitching weakly. Large portions of his remaining two legs were falling off, and a horrible mixture of gore and thin blue ichor was beginning to pour out of the wound left by the third.

“Flaming death! My leg... oh no... my leg!” Daego attempted to pull his body up, but collapsed weakly onto Reian's body.

“Don't swear now, you'll distract me!” Reian desperately flipped through the series of alerts, starting the emergency shutdown procedures, closing all the containment zones, reversing the thrusters-”

“Augh!” The Hleko began to feel a terrible numbness spreading through her body. Her eyes widened in horror as her mind began to blank out. An evacuation alarm screamed, far too late, and a series of explosions smashed apart the thin layer between the protected interior of the Lhado Haebna and the merciless void. With her last few instants of awareness, she embraced Daego, and felt his arms weakly reciprocate, before a deafening, blinding flash of white-hot gas ended their lives.

Eight seconds had passed.

On board the Hrkan, alarms were sounding. The entire fleet was going into emergency procedures. Images of the disintegrating vessel played on every vessel.

“All vessels, return to the Startraveler Immediately|Deploy disposable probes to a perimeter around the damage site|All vessels report status| Oh Great Mother, what little we know!”

Above the frenzied activity in the Hletho fleet, the hastily-spoken words from the old Hridani folktale struck true. The universe was a far more dangerous place than previously suspected.

Autoquarantine

Wahano Sam lay in his thick growth of Thotha, with several concerned Jahahunoun gathered around the entrance to his room. What they saw was not a pleasant sight.

A translucent discharge oozed from his eyes, which appeared dull and opaque, unlike their usual bright selves. His thin downy fur was matted and unkempt, and his body rested limply on the floor.

Gelunn and an unfamiliar Jahahunoun- perhaps a new arrival on Hulan- were engaged in what Sam assumed to be an argument of some sort. The newcomer was waving around what looked like one of their medical scanners and gesturing widely.
emselves
Sam's focus returned in on himself. Bits of his mind periodically blanked out, and he could feel large portions of his body numbed in response to the unknown pathogen inside his body. For a moment, he shuddered, then spat out a blue-hued liquid onto the floor

It was at that moment that instinctive behaviour dug in. When gravely ill, Hletho attempt to isolate themselves, in order to protect their clade- only now did Sam realize the danger he could be putting his hosts in with his continued presence in this state.

With unsteady movements, Sam drew himself upright and weakly slid his way along the ground. From a rack on the wall, he pulled out three knives, and placed each of them into the ring around his axle. Clumsily, he pulled off a small mesh of Thotha and ate it. Pulling out and equipping himself with a small supply of his equipment, Sam then set out towards the door. Several Jahahunoun had left, the way was clear.

“Gelunn. I will be disappeared. Do not follow. Absolutely do not follow.”

“You're... wait, what? In this condition? Your body is... not very survivable.”

Sam thought for a moment as he moved. Was Gelunn referring to a lack of redundant organs, or was this another strange Jahahunounism referring to temporary incapacitation? Difficult to tell.

Mind emptied, the Hlethen moved onwards with an uncharacteristic lack of response.

“Er... we were going to try and help you with this... Rahrrammae here suspects he's synthesized a countertoxin...”

The Honourable Captain Aihannue Saam twisted open the loose door at the end of the hall which opened into the outdoors, and ponderously continued on. The two Jahahunoun stared for several moments, before Rahrrammae broke the silence.

“Very strange...”

“That's not like him... as far as I thought I knew, at least.”

“Given the open structure of his nervous system, it's possible that a bacterial infection could be affecting him mentally. Are you tracking him?”

“We can follow where the speaker on his little translator device is. We made it, so it should still have a locator attached-”

“Isn't that the one he tore apart and rebuilt to a more appropriate size years ago?”

“Oh bother. Let's hope we can still do this...”

“If he dies, can I look at the body? I've only ever gotten to look at the records the Hletho have provided, and it would be an incredible opportu-”

“Yes!” exclaimed Gelunn, gesturing for his compatriot to stop, “just don't talk about it like that. Good grief, you're morbid.”

With a worried look, he extruded his smaller eyes and looked for his alien friend, but to no avail- Saam had already disappeared into the thick underbrush that was rapidly overtaking the installation.

“I think he'll be back.”

"Esteemed Overlord, it appears all fighting has ceased." flashed the surveillance officer. "The Northern combatants seem to have given up. The victors are gathering them up into large camps, with hundreds of individuals per camp." He bowed to the Overlord, not daring the entire time he communicated to look at his superior.

The Overlord seemed to take his time thinking about what he had just heard. Eventually he seemed to make up his mind, and nodded. "This is... interesting news. In your opinion, surveillance officer, is this good news?"

The surveillance officer, still looking down at the ground, nodded an affirmative.

The Overlord glowed a bright blue, the color of excitement. "Good then! After all these years of waiting, observing... our plans can finally work. You have been monitoring the native's communications? Do you believe they can be taken off guard? And what of the visitors to the planet those few years ago, are the natives allied with them?" he shot the questions uncharacteristically fast to his underling, not even bothering to compose himself (which was rare) due to the excitement he felt all through what he called his body.

The surveillance officer turned a pale green color, signifying he was a bit embarrassed by his superior's sudden loss of self control, but he still answered in a rainbow of different colors. "First of all, esteemed Overlord, we believe the natives have no idea that they were visited at all by the first two space travelers. The third, from the decrypted messages we've picked up over their coms traffic, suggest they have misinterpreted the message left behind, thinking it to be a warning of impending invasion. They have been working steadily to recreate the technology found in the crashed probes, but have not seemed to have made much progress yet. So, it is the opinion of the entire surveillance staff that they would not be expecting an invasion from their own planet any time soon. They are 100% sure they are the only sentient lifeforms inhabiting this planet." by the end of the report, the surveillance officer was glowing a deep orange color, proud of not only himself, but also of his top notch team.

The Overlord nodded. "Then it is so. We will assemble the fleet. On my word, we will launch the invasion." he was still a bright blue color, but now spikes of red shot through him. He was really looking forward to what would come.

Two months later, hundreds of large, metallic, spear shaped vessels rose from the depths of the Halvallan oceans. Destruction was not their primary goal: slaves were.
