[R&F] Small things you have noticed on playing

In case it hasn’t benen mentioned yet, getting the circumnavigation era score is indeed possible on non-wrapping maps, and it can be obtained by gaining visibility from a military alliance.

If you hover over the circumnavigation entry in the timeline it explains that it requires you to have revealed a single hex on each horizontal line of the map, which makes me wonder if you can simply walk a unit north/south in a line across the map to get it to trigger. If it is possible, depending on how much sea is present at the top and bottom of the map, doing it this way could make getting the era score very quick and easy.

Gilgabro has been one of the few leaders I can always count on for friendship :) My last two games have had him as my first and most reliable ally.

Something I noticed, though that was while modding: Alexander now has the same ignore warmongering trait that Gorgo has.

AI certainly more aggressive at going after spaceports. I knew it would happen eventually, but in the turn it took to promote my defensive spy, my spaceport got hit by another spy. That's so aggravating to lose coverage all because of a promotion. You are being punished for being successful.

This has happened to me a few times for various things when counter-spying. Often I end up with one particular district which is a "honeypot" for spies, they all love a certain commercial hub or whatever, so I send a spy there and it kills/captures spies like mad, but the downside is occasionally when I promote a spy slips through.

Spies also protect districts that are adjacent to the one you place them in. Can't you place multiple spies in districts adjacent to your spaceport for more layered protection from espionage?

With my first playthrough (did it raw without reading much about the new systems) on prince, the biggest take home lesson: its good to be a warmonger again!

I had just denounced Alex as was going to wait the x turns before doing some sort of causus, but the Era switched so I was able to take the new golden 'go to war' perk ( = light WM penalty)
In defeating him, I liberated a city state that was next to Persia.
Persia decides to conquer the newly liberated city state, thus triggering an emergency that I get invited to. As it happens, my troops are still sitting inside the borders, so it takes a single turn to 'win' the Emergency.
Here's where it gets wonky...after re-liberating the city state, I tried taking a Persian city as well to see what would happen as far as WM penalty. Penalty = 0. So I keep taking taking Persian cities and then the capital and then wipe him out completely. Zero WM penalties. Everyone (that I wasn't at war with) still loved me!
Then Tomryis caused an Emergency by conquering another CS that I had envoys in so I get invited to that one too. And so I wipe her out as well, again with zero penalties.

3 Empires wiped out in less than 50 turns, zero WM penalties. Not sure if this is what they intended, but I do know I'll be spreading envoys to CS near aggressive civs to get invited to Emergencies more often.

Yeah i noticed this in my game too. Lesson to AI is - if you trigger an emergency, ALL your cities are free game with no warmonger penalties.

I would imagine they almost certainly mean revealing a tile on each line in a horizontal direction (reveal each line of longitude, not each line of latitude). Otherwise, circumnavigation would never trigger if you’ve never revealed the polar caps. However, I think there should be a separate era score for exploring the poles, since in reality, that took much more effort than crossing every line of longitude.

Perhaps we should just hope for spherical maps in Civ VII ;)

Or Suzerains. In my first R&F game, I circumnavigated my continents map two turns after my first galley left harbor thanks to CS maps. Took me by complete surprise. I did wonder whether you do have to build a ship to get the credit, but I'm guessing not.

On the chatter about AI aggressively conquering City States, I haven't seen that but haven't yet played an R&F game on deity. Is it possible that it's Leader-dependent behavior. So far in the two R&F games I've played out, I've faced Russia twice, Congo twice, Persia, Macedon, Korea, Norway and Germany. Korea and Germany weren't given time to demonstrate any aggressive behavior before the failed to stand the test of time, but none of the rest noticeably battled more than one nearby CS, and there was much more Suzerain behavior than not. That has been especially noticeable for Congo.

I installed the "city state walls" mod and on Emperor the AI will still conquer some city-states in the mid to late game. Egypt for example just conquered Muscat in my most recent Mongol game (and damn her for doing so, I was suzerain )

Can someone explain the point of the +4 GP points? Is this solely for those who might be chasing the last Religion...cos it seems to me like you'll almost never get them!

View attachment 488207

I've used this in each of the two games I have played, and both times successfully nabbed a religion (it was the only way to nab a religion b/c i was behind on holy sites)

Nubia built it in my most recent game.

She was unlucky enough to start next to me in my first game with the Mongols. Also I'm starting to think Mongols are kinda powerful, their early horse rush is nastier than usual.

Playing as The Netherlands, my neighbors the Mongols  grabbed the temple as I was about to start building it. I really wanted it bad. Uncharacteristically, I felt the urge to send my troops over to take their city and the temple, but I noticed they were on their way to my capital. In the nick of time and feeling vengeful, I protected my capital (I hate their ability; they’re so hardy) and I destroyed its army not losing one unit. Felt so proud of myself. Right now, we’re at peace, but I’m still building my army while doing all the things we peacemongers usually do (it’s my second R&F game and first with the Netherlands so I’m learning how to play them), but I have my eyes on their capital still. I need and want the Temple of Artemis badly. I might pay for it though.

And you still get notifications saying that Civ X -who you have met- has said "blah" to Civ Y - who you haven't met; but now have the frustration of knowing is in the game; when you'd rather find out how you're supposed to.:D

I actually think this makes sense. If you have an envoy with a city state or adequate level of intelligence with another state, you should have information on their dealings with others even if you don't know exactly where they are located.

Temple of Artemis really isn't popular, so could easily be a wonder you chase for yourself, especially since placing matters, and AI never would place it on the right place.[/WHITE]

I lost it pretty early in my first R&F game (king), and I had a spot that would have gotten me eight amenities out of it. Really annoying...

So, to clarify, is your complaint that AI Civs often take out at least one CS in the mid to late game or that they are aggressively gobbling up CSes? Because I agree with observing them often taking at least one out. But I have not observed aggressive predatory action toward CSes in general, which is what some folks have seemed to complain about in R&F.

I've been playing a one city challenge for the heck of it with Korea on King. Mildly amusing, and I think I'm on course to win, but life would be a whole lot easier if you could sub out governors. I've had Magnus since the start, and went for Amani second. Having maxed out their promotions, I now have others hired, but am unable to unassign Magnus to sub in more useful ones. Obviously this is just a problem for one city games, but I think if you can hire additional governors without assigning them, you should be able to switch them around.
