So there's a guy at my college that wants to get in a fight with me...

Just document everything while continuing to ignore him. Take a few precautions like you have been. Whatever you do, don't engage him. If he wants to think you're some kind of sissy, afraid to fight him, fine. His warped ideas of honour ain't worth your career.

Ofc it makes a world of difference. People who pick fights becsuse they have beef with you wouldn't fight you if its resolved. People who bully you have nothing to resolve with you. They just don't like you.

You made the error when you told the guy to piss off by exacerbating the situation. So its probably too late to talk it over. I don't know what you said nor how you said it but ignorant people don't realize they commit error themselves. That's why they're ignorant. Its very possible to get loud while playing a game so its not hard to imagine the other side w.o him being here. Not that I want to accuse you of doing things you haven't done. But I don't buy your bias whole heartedly either.

Simply get beat up. Then lawsuit time.

What sort of college is it you go to btw. Are we talking a high level 4 year college? The better or more selective your school is the more likely that this guy has something wrong with him, simpy because such behaviour is rare to non-existent at such schools among norms.

Other than "yelling" I did nothing to deserve his profanity and insults directed at me. So when he confirmed he was serious, of course I told him to piss off.

He's just eager to get in a fight with me.

First thing on Monday go and see the teacher you reported it to (is it the same teacher twice) and ask what has been done to stop this person approaching you again. Tell the teacher again about all the incidents and say you are concerned. If you are unhappy with the response then go to her boss or consular.

Do not do anything without talking to her first unless you are actually attacked. For all you know she did something on Friday (today) which you do not know about. If you go over her head and she has done something she will not be pleased with you. Also the other person you report it to may just tell you to go back to her or think you are just going round telling tales.

Do not make up stories. If you get found out you could be the one in trouble.

Write down everything that has happened and keep a record as it happens from now on.

Hopefully the teacher will have had a chance to have a word with him or he will have gone on to another person on Monday.

Community college, as I have already stated.

Pardon me. Well, depending on what kind they're unlikely to have the resources / or interest to do much about it unfortunately, so ignore what I said.

In the USA you have idiosyncratic policies for people with mental disorders, which means there are lots of nut jobs in college classrooms. I'm not BSing but saying this from experience. There were two guys in my dorm with mental disorders, and one of them tried to strangle a girl I knew.

If you contact people further up, or even even whatever student support service you have, that might be how your problem is solved. If there's something wrong with him they might know.

There may of course be nothing wrong with him and he just feels he has to settle a grievance, in which case shadowplay has it well enough.

This is pure crap. I have a mental disorder myself, Schizoaffective to be precise. But having that is not justification for going around and harassing others. I don't care if this guy has a mental disorder or not. He has no right to treat me like this.

Called the cops honestly. You pay taxes not to have to deal with this. Cops on the other hand are paid to deal with this.

Provoke him into a fight in an area full of people, get him to hit you, don't fight back - get him sent to jail :D Maybe that is a bit malicious and you may be going too far but this guy deserves it, he has gotten all the way to college without anybody to put him in his place; let the police do it.

Moderator Action: Not an appropriate suggestion.
Please read the forum rules: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=422889

Or just ignore it and carry on with your life.

Listen, my friend, it's not about moralizing, if someone has a certain kind of condition that's just a fact of life you have to deal with. It's not something you should mess with.

Mind you, if you talk like this to randomers I could see why you might find yourself in this position. Rightly or wrongly. ;)

If he continues at this rate, he will be in jail regardless. No, I'd much rather not get beat up, thanks.

I'm going to talk to the teacher again to see what she did, and then discuss the possibility of talking to the dean next with her. If none of that works, then yes, the cops are next.

I totally agree - mental illness is often misrepresented and misunderstood by people who should know better. But it can also be very difficult and stressful for such people to handle aggression from others. I hope you manage to get this sorted out soon and that you get the college to realise they should suppport you so that it doesn't divert you from your studies too much.

And if the cops do get called, please film the tazer video and post it up here for the lols :D

I wasn't calling YOU pure crap, I was just saying "mental disorder" is not a justification for harassment. Nor was I aware that you were even saying that. I thought you were pointing out the the GOVERNMENT sees it that way, and you posted an article.

Take a punch fall to the floor, as i said your doing this in a public place and it will be full of witnesses. Anyway I think it's beyond the college's remit to discipline students who threaten people like you, he is an adult it is the police who have that responsbility. All the college can do is throw him out.

btw zelig's suggestion is hillarious

you used caps in the above response? maybe you were shouting at him?

Mental illness is misunderstood in many ways. One of the ways is underestimating the sort of dangers involved. It's not a lesson you want to learn the hard way. esp. in the deinstitutionalized US.

It's not a justification for harassment but could be an explanation for it.

Report it to the higher ups, every community college should have some sort of protocol to deal with this, try student services and just look at the rack of brochures. Failing that and maybe in addition to it you can always get a restraining order, and have a sheriff serve him with it for good measure. Restraining orders are usually forms you download from your local court website, all you do it show up and turn it in and wait all day and a Judge signs it. (Or doesn't sign it.) Viola, he goes to jail if he comes near you.

Calling the cops won't do anything, they will just tell you to get a restraining order.
