Speculation: Firaxis Working on X-Com Remake?

The original Xcom was amazing, spent far too many hours playing it.

I hated those ethereals - jump ship lands;

Squad member A: Mind controlled....

Me: hmm, ok only one guy, I can handle it.. wait he's the one with the TNT charge. <BOOM>

Terrifying... even 15 years later...

That is just a magnificent scenario. God I love it. Anyway, off to play the new episode of Tales of Monkey Island. Fantastic.

or the good old "grenade relay" when one agent miss throw and the intended recipient couldn't pick it up and throw it without dying.

I still remember the first time I played X-COM. I loaded up my troops with the most powerful weapons available and lots of extra ammo only to find that each one of them had just enough action points to move where the aliens had a clear shot at him or her.
Game over, man!

Let's not forget that Microprose was also founded by Sid Meier. ;)

I love that on the Wikipedia page for Sid Meier, at the bottom, it says:

"See Also:

Will Wright"

Who happens to be the other one of the few game designers I really like. The other one is Chris Sawyer.

I hope they keep combat turn-based. Enough RTwP clones. Make better graphics, better interface, improve the gameplay. X-Com works turn-based.

Now that brings back some memories!! Absolutely loved that game...I remember I bought a playstation from a friend and had no instructions so I had to teach myself to play it...I finally figured it out and logged countless hours...count me in for the remake as long as they keep the same concept and don't try to make it into something it is not.

Well at worst the Fallout 3 analogy might hit the spot. So I wouldn't have my hopes up, considering this is Take-Two and considering Firaxis' CV after Civ 3. Though mentioning there could be a separate spin-off for the retards might be a sign they might have the ambition or respect to make things properly.

Could make one kick butt game if they took the awesome parts from all three games. The basic plot and story of UFO Defense, the truly frightening and powerful aliens of Terror from the Deep, and the gravity, tons of awesome weapons/items and separate factions that you can raid cause they pissed you off from Apocolpse(And the choice between real time and turnbased)

I'd like them to basically recreate the original X-Com game, though without the bugs and with better graphics (and with the faces of the soldiers visible regardless of their protective suits). None of the sequels was as good.

UFO Defense and Terror from the Deep were awesome, and Apocalypse might've been good, but I couldn't stomach the unexplainable retrofuturistic look. Completely unlike the previous games' oft comicbook-like design, which was great.

Give me something in accordance with the first two games and I'll be thrilled. :goodjob:

you know what firaxis is good at, making bank. i will buy this game. it will probly be a $35 dollar game that firaxis can slang so fast. the investors must be itching

I really would like to see Firaxis develop a new game (concept) for a change. The last one IIRC is Sim Golf back in 2002 and before that SMAC, which is kind of 50% new as it relates heavily on CIV. This doesn't mean I don't greatly appreciate the continued development of existing series. As hard as it is to think of some new concepts I can't imagine they have run out of ideas to turn into games and would love to see something really new.

The original X-COM worked for me because the business of researching, gathering resources (money) and building was interrupted at intervals by the switch to squad mode after you'd downed a UFO. The challenge of fighting the aliens on a macro level suddenly changing to fighting them face to face is one of the reasons why the game is still on my computer.

For my money (And they'd get it in a heartbeat) Firaxis could modernize the game so that there was more than one research path to beating the aliens, spruce up the graphics, and write a contemporary AI while retaining all of the original elements of the gameplay and I'd be very happy.

I'm not saying that X-com didn't have replayability because it did, but nothing in gaming can beat your first run through X-com. Not knowing anything about the challenges you will face made the game immensly thrilling. Suddenly when you get your routine down and you're confident that you have made the necessary preparations, you realize too late that you are not ready...

When your guys fan out as normal and then.. some 'thing' runs up and turns your guy into a mutant zombie, or your guys just start killing each other it's like, "Everybody back to the ship!!! Retreeeeeeeeeat!!":aargh:

I envy the guys who never played X-com and get to experience an updated version. It's somthing that can't be relived.

What exactly is X-COM? Like Civ in space?

If you don't know, get DOSBox and a copy of the game, and just play without knowing anything. It's much better that way.
