Update 13 - 2013 FF The Year of Uneasy Rest
SPOTLIGHT: Southern Pashawari border - Late Fall
It was a cloudy day, a weird weather - dark and heavy, yet no rain. It was not the kind of clouds you expected this late in the year, but the weather had been screwed all since the Great Cold. Anything unusual a few years ago was now everyday happenings. The flowers were blooming on the mountainsides as well, thinking it was spring again after the brief period of cold in the middle of summer. Still, one thing was constant: the lack of rain. It looked like a period of heat and draught followed the former cold and abundant snow. It was only due to the intimate knowledge of nature and plants that the Pashawari Adepts had been successful in maintaining a constant food-supply.
The weather had also warped much of the countryside. What was once green and moist pasture was now a sickly orange wasteland of rotting grass. The grasslands had taken the dry weather far worse than the hills, that at least managed to get some rain out of the passing clouds. Here on the flatlands, the only water came from the rivers running up from the South. Still, there was a belt of living trees to be found just by the border. It was the natural defense works planted and maintained by the Adepts. It was healthy, and stood out in the sense that it followed the "real" seasons. While all other plants were blooming and sprouting new leaves, the border trees were strikingly crimson and slowly shedding their canopies.
A lonely sentry stood on a flowery hill and gazed at the trees. His steed was moving restlessly, as if it did not want to stay, but the horseman kept it under control with his knees and ankles. His left hand held a tassled spear decorated with a tiny flag - the crest of the king. His right hand was held at his brow, although it was not strictly necessary to block the dim light from above. It showed just how focused he was, and dedicated to his duty. The Shabans could not be trusted in his opinion, and he was not about to be responsible for an invasion going unnoticed. Not that he found this task any enjoyable aside from the odd scenery. It was as boring as it was arduous. At the end of the day his back was always killing him from peering so much, and his eyes were weary.
He always said to himself every time he went out that this day would be the day the Shabans came. But they never did. No pink tree appeared, and never did he have to spur his fierce steed in a dead run for the guardpost. He never even spotted spies or scouts. Nothing ever happened. This day looked no different, and the weather was dark besides. It all promised to be another boring and monotonous day. The horseman yawned, and wished for something to trip the alarm - even if it was just a test run by the Adepts to make sure the acorns were working - and that he was not sleeping on duty. What he wouldn't give to see a pink dot among the red trees. That shockingly pink color seen in no other forest, nay no other place on the Southern Continent. It was an invention by the Adepts. So striking and flamboyant. Just like that tree over there - that TREE!
A split second was all it took. Eastern section, two, three triggers. No, more! He was dying to spur his horse, but he had to note how many acorns were triggered in order to make a precise report of the enemy size. But the acorns just kept triggering. The number was up to twelve now. the sentry watched in terror as more and more acorns popped and pink trees sprouted ceaselessly across the stretch of forest. Twenty, at least, and still not stopping. This was no invasion! The only explanation had to be that the Shabans were moving over the border with their entire people! The sentry kicked his horse two times and raced back to his guardpost. The invasion from Shaba had begun.
Global News: The Undeads have now gathered in two large groups. One is situated on the Grey Isle, the other is south of the Steppes. Cairen scouts have reported a veritable sea of undead creatures, both human and animal, moving westwards. The scouts also witnessed a number of abominations, creatures made up of a mix of corpses. These monsters are as tall as trees, and have a vaguely humanoid shape. It is clear that whatever their intentions are, a horde of undeads marching with a seeming purpose is not a good thing. Although they have been moving westwards for now, it could easily turn northwards and overrun Shaba and Cairo. The weather is also doing barrelrolls, shifting from cold to warm and back again in a matter of weeks. This anomaly is also accompanied by a lack of precipitation, and the interior is feeling the effects of this already. The rivers still provide abundant waters, as the snow and ice in the Spine of the World is starting to melt in prodigious levels.
Heartlands: The new Senate in Benethrezim is formed. A formal election will be held next year, when new representatives are chosen from all of the regions. For now, Seth Dethos is instated as provisionary President. Soltyrian delegates are inspecting the votes in Benethrezim, making sure there is no funny business. Seth Dethos himslef has gone to Ramon to help making the new Fire Academy. With the help of the Fire Adepts in Ramon, the scribing has already begun. The plan is that these scrolls and books will be copied and sent to Soltyria later as reparation for the recent war. Aside from this, Barad-dur in Benethrezim is fortified, presumably to prevent it to be easily captured in the event of another war. Benethrezim has already been stripped of its water magic, so the extra caution is to be expected.
Borderlands: Pashawar has tested their Pink Acorn warning system once and for all. The results, however baffling, were terribly accurate. At first, it was thought that Shaba had invaded with an army counting tens of thousands. But it was discovered that the acorns had triggered on the undeads marching southwards, presumably to join with the larger group in the south. Still, they could not be left there to terrorize the land and prevent a real Shaban invasion from going unnoticed, so the Pashawari troops attacked the undeads at once. They were victorious despite the vast number of enemies, since the mindless undeads are barely able to strike back against their assailants. Now the undeads are wiped out within Pashawar, and the border rests easy.
Islands: The Empire received a diplomat from Felaskhar, demanding the surrender of Wu'di, and the payment of yearly tribute, lest the entire navy of the Empire be destroyed. This angered the First Prince greatly, but also enticed his imagination. After much research, the Adepts Soldiers devised a deadly weapon aimed directly at their seabound foes. It was a large globe of pure flame, capsuled in a shell of magically strengthened earth. The Empire navy set sail for Felaskhar, and was discovered easily by the Sealords. They attacked the ships from beneath the waves, but much of their efforts were dispelled by the Adepts Soldiers who sailed with the navy. At last, they could not hinder the Empire from reaching one of their underwater cities, and the bomb was dropped. The effect was greater than imagined by the any, as the entire city was engulfed in an explosion of boiling seawater. The destructive wave destroyed much of the city, and all life was thoroughly cooked and slowly floated to the ocean floor, proving their immense success to the Empire fleet. This deadly weapon will likely be used against the two remaining Felaskhar settlements. What the rebels choose to do - or what they indeed can do - is as interesting as it is critical for their survival.
Western Shelf: Soltyria is regaining from the shock dealt by the Morag Tong. Their plans for the Isle of Tranquility seemed dashed at first, but now with the promises of Benethrezim and Seth Dethos, it is rekindled. They have also started the preparations necessary to decode and learn the magic language of the Water Academy looted from Drach'nyen. After their army pulled out, some of the Tori-sympathizers also left with them, giving the Soltyrians a tiny population boom. Still, the nation has a new rival after Shaemar entered...
TEH RENAISSANCE! Shaemar has undergone a vast reform and renewal. Technology has been promoted, and new discoveries has been made. Aside from the upswing the people of Shaemar has experienced in both pride and wealth, the discovery of dragonpowder stands as the hallmark of their achievements. The powder is explosively flammable, and is capable of producing immense blasts even in small quantities. Currently, it has been applied to mining, as it makes breaking the rock much easier. It is also rumored that the Adepts of Shaemar is trying to find a way to apply it to military use as well...
That is about it. I know some parts are not mentioned, but I left them out since it's not much to be said. Of course, there's a lot of stuff going on that is left out because I was told to, or was otherwise secret. But I fear this update war boring for many of you. Sorry if it was. Peace is boring.
