SSNES: Fall of Wu'di

The Drath Plains:
The Largest Plaines in Eastern wu’di. Extending from the Forest that birth the Konahn Empire, to the north to the sea. It Was the first Real natural Obstacle the fledgling Empire of Konhan encounter in it’s expansion.
It was also one of their greater opportunities, and the birthplace of the minor class magic known as taming.
Initially, when the Konahn’s encounter the Plains, it halted their expansion. Used to Living under the canopy of the Forrest, and amazed with eh Vast herds of horses and eltrin, they were initially Stumped by how to proceed. And for many years their expansion toward the Edge of the territory of the former empire of Wu’di.
But then emperor Konhan had an Idea and everything changed...

Sealords were holding a crash-course to magic to the greatest of sea serpents at the deserted ruins of the underwater city. The Sealords had had only a quick glimpse at the magicbomb when it had been dropped. Breaking spells wasn't as hard as it was usually thought to be, it was simply observing the structure of the spell, thrusting a metaphorical finger in to the center, twist, and the spell would blow on it's casters face. But a spell could be made very hard to break, if it included actual, natural and real substance. For example, Sealords summoned their elementals and waves from real water, giving it mass even after the spell was worn out or broken. That had been done with the bomb as well, or so the Sealords had told Dareos. The Sealords had glimpsed only a hard shell made of earth, and extreme heat behind it. Such a shell would have to be broken either by brute force – unwise considering what was behind it – or an exceptional strenght of mind.

Such strength as Dareos hoped to find in the serpent. His name was incomprehensible in common language, consisting of the serpents deeds during his centuries long lifetime. He had told the Sealords a lot of the structure of the both community and lifeline of the great serpents. The serpents were actually born as lizards – they had seen them amongs the serpents earlier – but round about at the age of hundred year, they dropped their legs and adapted completely to underwater life. After that, the serpents spent their time as almost mindless beasts, hunting and growing, until their fourhundreth birthday, when they developed a humanlike intelligence. That is also when they get mature and are able to breed. Only the elder serpents can control them before that. At the age of sixhundred their magical skills started to crop. According to the great serpent himself, he was living his second millenium. He had also told that the serpents intelligence and magical skills increased with age, and enemies they defeat. Himself, he had defeated three other great serpents before gaining the control of the serpentkin.

The Sealords were now introducing their way of connecting with the sea and feeling it's inhabitants to the serpent. So this is how it's done? The serpent seemed vaguely amused at it. If I had known it was this easy, I'd have done it ages ago! His mindconnection had recently grown louder, more powerful with every day of training. Sometimes Dareos wondered if it was wise to teach such a mighty beast all of their secrets. But still, it was the only way. The serpent absorbed knowledge at hundred times rate to common adept students.

They had also noted a strange ability the serpent possessed. Instead of using his inner strenght, it rather absorbed the energy for the spells from his environment, sea. Dareos also felt a small nudge in his own powers when the serpent casted the strongest of spells. Perhaps that ability could be used against the Empire.

The serpent had promised that once the training would be finished, the other serpents and himself would help the mareghar at their war. Yet, somehow, Dareos believed that at least the younger serpents would join battles becouse of their thirst for humanflesh.

When the elder serpent had heard that from his thoughts, he had laughed, but promised still that he would bind his people to mareghar in ancient magical ways, that had remained amongs the serpents only as lore. But now there would be a new adept serpent to animate the ancient traditions.

The training continued under Dareos' supervision.

SS, can the Empire train more Adept soldiers, or are the ones they have now all they'll ever get?

Adept Soldiers are the students and apprentices of the Princes themselves. That means the Princes themselves must teach them how to cast their spells. There are one boon and one drawback each with this:

1) The Adept Soldiers undergo a ritual that magically enhances their affinity for magic, and enables them to memorize far more spells than normal Adepts. This is the reason for their superiority compared to Adepts elsewhere.

2) The Princes must train the Adepts personally, and this is quite tiresome and time-consuming. Therefore, the Princes are reluctant to train new Adept Soldiers. Of course, they are not completely stupid, and will train as many as they can if they are forced to. But the internal rivalry between the Princes has made it so that there must be an equal number of Adept Soldiers from each branch. This, naturally, puts a limit to how many can be trained, since all of the Princes will have to train in order to raise the total number and maintain the balance.

Now, I will read your story.

EDIT: Very good, Betrayed! :goodjob:

I think you should post those coins on the "Faces of NESing" thread. :)

EDIT: I think profiles are the rule when it comes to royal portraits on coins, though.
Ask and ye shall receive! Here is the gold coin, with profile, and in just a minute I shall post all three to Faces of NESing!

Also, it has come to by attention that the silver coin consumed bandwidth. Gold coin shown in miniature; click for full version.

Wow, that was really great, Erik! :goodjob: What software do you use to make them?

They are magical artifacts. Artifact are items or objects imbued with magic that can be triggered by Adepts to produce a preset effect. The totems of Konahn is an example of magical artifact, although they are minor in both size and effect. Technically, they are not upheld by the Adepts, but they need to be "triggered" by "completing" the spell.

As for the bomb, it's a large one-charge artifact. As with most of these kinds of artifacts, they cost much to both develop and produce later. As far as triggering goes, it was more a task of unraveling the Earth capsule than it was finishing the Fire spell. Does this answer your question?

Have I sent orders?

Exist there Commando+N levels of training?

No, there does not. There is virtually no limit to training, but a practical one exists. Or, at least, no Adept has trained so much as to feel he cannot advance further. However, there is all these things called sleep and other bodily needs that must be satisfied. This, however, does not apply to undeads, sich as the lichlords of Rollux. Or does it? I'm not really sure. But yeah, as for you, no more training. :p

Orders sent. I intend to make my nation rich and prosperous.

WLTKDay!

The apprentices stood warily back. Shezmon, who had warned them that any number of cataclysms could happen when he attempted his new contraption, pulled out the object he had been working with for the last few days. It was a broad steel pipe, attached to a polished wooden handle. Into the pipe was drilled a hole, wherein Shezmon had stuffed a length of cord. Now he poured some of the Dragonpowder into the pipe, and then a single coin. Under terrified glances, he raised the strange tool, aimed at a nearby tree, and fired.
The students that stood the closest to Shezmon screamed or shouted, or just cowered frightfully, as they were splattered with blood and brain substance. Some gulped in vain, and walked slightly to the side to vomit in the undergrowth. Almost all had gone slightly deaf. One of the mages raised his voice slightly.
"Master Shezmon?"
"This is why I told you to be careful." The air shimmered weirdly around the shattered corpse, and in the blink of an eye the scattered flesh and bones had formed anew onto the cranium of the Arch-Mage.
Several of the students blinked foolishly.
"This was done with a pipe that had one single cavity, a tear no longer than an inch, no more thick than the width of a hair. I also applied a generous amount of Dragonpowder. Now you have seen what power it possessed and what perfection it requires.. I hope you understand the need for detail."
The students gulped in unison.
"Very well. Now, take this flawless pipe.." Shezmon retrieved a similar weapon, filled it with slightly less Dragonpowder, and aimed at the apple tree once again.
The boom of the weapon almost deafened the mages again, but they could still hear the hailstorm of torn apples that rattled from the branches.
"It should be more clear than before what a weapon this is. Just be careful.. I dislike cleaning up corpses."
Some of the mages gulped again, as they realized the cold Disciple would not look out for them in any way.
