Star Trek mod - The Next Generation!

yeah i thought those planets looked graphically weird but I figured it would just fix itself during the game.
Nope ,the editor is pretty much 'what you see is what you get'... :) This second map looks much better... Both the Klingons and the Cardassians will have some breating space now...

although I would love to make a dominion scenario (a la the old civ 2 one)... I am afriad that my scenario making skills are lacking (it took me 30 mins just to learn how to put in cities for that map :D
We can make it together if you want. Use the large map as a base and work from there. All the necessary civ's are already available...

If feel like the star ships are actually a bit too slow forthe large map. Maybe I should work with warp factors... Warp 1 = 1 tile, warp 9.99 = 10 tiles. Anyone think that is a good idea?

I think the borg should have an additional unit:
the Subspace Conduit.
It is a non-moving unit. Can be unloaded and reloaded onto a ship. No defense, no attack, not capturable, must be defended.
It has the ability to act as a teleport pad (use hacked editor).
This would allow Borg ships to not only teleport back to a planet with a transwarp nexus, but also return to their sector of "exploration"

This is especially important if you increase the ship speed for the other races...

just my two cents take it or leave it.....

You mean something like a transwarp hub unit that works like the aircraft carrier in the regular civ game? Sounds like a good idea, but can you load units like that into a transport unit?

Hey flamand I like this idea. It would make travel a lot easier... try to make 9.99 a lot better than 5 tho, esp since you get 5 pretty early.

How would you implement such a thing?

hmmm... I wonder if such a massive map would not be too slow?
I would love to help. However, my internet access is at a minimum for the next coulpa weeks. I will be much more available then.

Not really, for as far as I can tell so far... Let mesee. If I feel like it I will start, the biggest job is getting the information in order to put everything as correctly on the map as possible.

Just finished playing a game as the Klingons on the new small map. I had to surrender due too the whole galaxy declaring war on me and overrunning my empire! It seems like I settled one planet too close to the Tellarites homeworld and then everyone decided to punish me.

Good thing I had a mutual protection pact with the Romulans but after 10 turns they declared war on me too.

Love this mod and will continue to play for some time. I have a large map game going now well into it's 100th turn. Wait time between turns is 1 minute 25 seconds on a P4 1.6GHZ.

That's a feature/limitation of the game engine. Food production in the city square is always exactly enough for one population point.

For the ST mod, this leads to the paradoxical situation that it's better to avoid settling the best/most fertile planets. Instead you're better off if you settle some desert hellhole in the neighborhood! :crazyeye:

One solution to this that I put in my own Space mod that I was tinkering with was to make "Star" terrain the only settlable terrain. Sounds a little weird, but then you could see it as representative of claiming a system and the planets in it. The graphics all look fine (just make sure that you fix the rules so that you don't "chop-down" the jungle/star  ) and the best part is that it lets you make full use of everything in the system.

Downside is that you can't have multiple "cities" in a system (or multiple civs making use of a system) and it sort of kills colonies.

It might be possible to also tweak the worker jobs to make them feel more like you are colonising planets etc. For example, irrigating a Class-M planet represents colonising it, or something. Perhaps if workers were used up in the task, as if they were settling there.

Now you know: don't mess with Tellarites... :D

Nice idea... I'm curious how your mod will be. But unfortunately I don't think it would work out for this mod...

Oh, don't expect anything from my mod, it was just some testing I was doing using Vadus' space terrain. I don't have the time (or skill) to make a full-fledged mod or scenario. I just had regular ships sailing through space and some new rules.

But you are right, while it is a solution, I don't know if it meets the feel of Star Trek either. For one, the map would have to be rebuilt so that star-systems fit into the fat "cross" surrounding each star, so they could be reached by the "city"

You can change it in the scenario properties in the editor, but it wouln't be much fun playing those since they only have two ship types...

Pretty good mod, I would really like to see some scenarios, like the war between Earth and the Romulans, the dominion war, and maybe one in the Mirror Universe, or have something like the noraml Universe vs the Mirror Universe ^_^

Feel free to make one... :D I'll be happy to help...

I'm working on it, but it might take some time...

Fired up a new game as the Federation instead of my usual Klingons. (I've put my large Klingon game on hold for when I have more time) I'm using the small map and I must say there are more resources within the Federations' reach than when I was playing as the Klingons.

I like the fact that the Federation ships and ground personnel are not as strong offense wise as the Klingons are. Seems to fit with the overall ST universe. :goodjob:
