I thought I'd make a thread devoted solely for people who play SC2 competitively. My username is LightSpectra (cc 504), I play on the North American server as protoss. I like watching professional gamers more than playing, though. If I ever make it in Master's, I might start streaming games or commenting on them. (As of writing, I'm in Platinum league; I can beat my zerg and protoss friends in Diamond; but my PvT is abysmal)

Here's one of my favorite tournament games. It's an older series between vileSpanishiwa (Z) vs. GoOdy (T), two of my favorite players. Spanishiwa is known for cutting gas and macroing until 50+ supply, which allows him to play swarm style until he gets infestors. GoOdy is famous for his mech style, where he goes tank/thor in all three match-ups, and also has very low APM (actions per minute) by pro-gaming standards.

Been following the competitive scene since the beta, don't really have alot of time to watch or even play at the moment though, what with going back to study and all (Although I'm still able to watch the GSL finals, as boring as they usually are!)

Mostly just read up on any results/news through Team Liquid.

I must say that while I've never played Starcraft multiplayer and have not the slightest interest in ever doing so, I find those commentated replay videos surprisingly fascinating in a way that none of these other games ever are. I barely know which unit is which, let alone the finer technicalities of build order strategies, but yeah with a bit of commentary it translates surprisingly well to an ignorant audience like myself.

Hey, I'm a fan of the Starcraft 2 Proscene, mostly GSL although I watch other tournaments and streams when I can. Losira fighting!

Would you be interested in playing a game some time? My account is KaYoS.691.

Sure, I'm about to log on myself.

I played at Diamond level during the month after release (Terran) but I haven't touched SC2 since then. How has balance changed?

when I changed my name on cfc a few years ago, I wasn't very good at thinking of screen names so I stole a moderator's name from teamliquid :).

I'm a gigantic bw fanboy but I play sc2/follow the free professional games as well (I don't buy gomtv tickets, but since first match is free I watch those). My university also has a weekly starcraft club, that sometimes is bi-weekly (last year we met up on saturdays as well to watch proleague/play the csl matches). Plus we're all friends in the club, so we just meet up randomly at times to play sc together or eat or something. Last year was mainly just a handful of us hardcore bw fanboys, but this year starcraft 2 fans consistently come to the club and effectively doubled the size of the "active" club members. Even ~15 people are taking a trip to MLG orlando if funds from the student government comes through (passed earlier renditions, vote I think was last night; covers gas/most of spectator tickets).

If people wonder what the csl is, it's the competition between canadian and american universities called "collegiate star league" iirc. There is like 200 schools divided into divisions of ~9/10 each by the looks of it this year! Probably like 64 teams go to the playoffs. Last year I played for our team some, but this year I am not good enough.

if enough people post, you can always just make a private chat channel "cfc" or something that I'd be willing to idle in. Currently I'm a masters terran. I'm starting to play a lot more this semester after not having played at all during the summer, where I played bw exclusively.

edit- NgeNuity.261 on north america server if anyone wants to add.

Hey, I'm involved in the lower levels of the University of British Columbia's CSL team!

Danish, balance has changed a fair bit, and the metagame has shifted a lot at different levels. I couldn't myself speak for what things are like for Diamond Terrans, but my intrinsic anti-terran bias says 'ezpz'. ;)

Next time I login I'll certainly join a cfc channel and see if anyone else is there. However being in new zealand means I probably wouldn't see anyone else very often. ;)

I've added you Kennigit, and let it be decreed that cfc is our channel! I'll make a point of adding it to the channels that I always idle in.

Has anyone else seen last nights GSL ro16 matches? Apparently it was the best GSL day ever, and alas, I don't have time to watch all the matches! :(

Nestea had an amaaaaaazing match with Startale Virus. I haven't seen Leenock or Dongraegu's games yet, but you can count on me to cheer on the Zerg.

In other news, my mission to reach Diamond continues. After knuckling down on my Starcraft play for the last three weeks, I've moved up from 30th-40th Platinum to holding onto a top-8 spot in my league. I pushed into 4th for a bit, but a few people below me with more bonus pool to burn managed to jet ahead, pushing me back to 7th place. An hour or two of games pushed me back up to sixth, but things are getting tough- competition is high in my league, and most of my matches are against Diamond-level players at this point.

lol didn't UBC like win the whole thing last year 0.o!

edit- also, if anyone wants I play bw more often. NgeNuity or friji_riji on iccup/fish servers. c- terran on iccup (pushing c), or c level protoss because p is imba.

Yeah, we won previously and are leading this year- not that I have much at all to do with that. ;)

LightSpectra beat me with Carriers yesterday- that's a good way to make me red in the face. :p

Also, my laddering has brought me to within one single win of 2nd place!

I don't play RTS at all, but since I have some Starcraft players here, could someone explain to me the obsession with APM? Is it really necessary to be making pointless button clicks in order to keep your APM up? Is there really something worth clicking on for that extra 1 action per minute, or do you ever have waiting periods?

They're not "pointless clicks." If you do things faster, you'll have more stuff. It's really that simple. Suppose you have a pro player and a newbie; the pro player, because his APM is high, can do everything he has to do, and steadily produce harvesters, whereas the newbie will have a 10 second delay between making each harvester. Consider the effect of this after five minutes (300 seconds): the pro player will have 30 more harvesters, and since his economy will be so huge, he'll just make a bigger army and steamroll the newbie.

Or, suppose the newbie player ques up six harvesters, whereas the pro player will hotkey his nexus/command center and starts a new harvester immediately after the last one is done. Well, since SCVs and probes cost 50 minerals, this means the newbie will have 250 minerals doing nothing, which the pro player can be using to get units, tech buildings or expanding.

Or, suppose the newbie player just uses "attack move" for every battle because he's too slow to micro his units. The pro player can have his weakened units pull back before they die and move to the back, so the damage-per-second stays the same and damage is evenly distributed, whereas the newbie player is going to lose his stuff in droves. This is especially pertinent in harassment: the newbie player won't see that a terran drop is wreaking havoc in his mineral line, and so he'll lose dozens or more harvesters; but a pro might catch the dropship on the minimap, pull back rapidly and lose nothing.

There's so many things you have to keep track of in SC2 - harvesters, tech, building placement, harassment, build order, upgrades, unit composition, energy/spells, detection, supply, etc. - that the player who can do the most stuff in the least amount of time will have a huge edge over the other players. This isn't to say, though, that APM is all that matters. GoOdy has something like 80 APM, which is considered pitiful by pro standards, but he's defeated in tournament IMNesTea, the best zerg player in the world, who has 300+ APM.

Anyway, here's another one of my favorite games. IMMvP (considered the best player in the world at the moment, though that's strongly contested by SlayerS_MMA and IMNesTea) going terran bio against (now EG, but then Liquid) HuK, arguably the best player from North America, who tech switches into protoss air mid-game and uses a unique unit composition in order to keep MvP's economy low.

Alot of early game stuff is pointless clicking though. Even then it's still not a very useful stat, it's only really a measure of how much and how fast one person can do stuff.
