StGLNES I "In Story and Song" II

Most of the update is done, but I am falling asleep and I still need one assignment to be done for tomorrow. I appologise and move the update for tomorrow. I will have no trouble complteting it after school.

Iberia and Gallia
In Orleans the rulers have attempted to carry out a military reform in order to increase efficiency of the army. In reality this transformed into a court battle between different advocates of the reform. One of the groups is standing for a grater number of small formations in the army and as a consequence a larger commander force. The other group stands for greater more independent formations with less commanders and greater autonomy. This is an unexpected problem and a large one with almost all the court divided on the issue.
However economically Orleans becoming better and better. Increased and uninterrupted trade enriched the land and helped to develop the infrastructure.
The expansion to the North was aided by the army and here’s what caused it to halt. While the army was too busy disputing among themselves to guard the land they occupied in the North. Vast territories were joined with the Kingdom of Orleans, however in the very North a group of tribes known as the Sennons had a significant potential for building their own state. Now conquered (or rather joined with Orelans) they are calling for independence. A natural borth leader Aririx of the Medimatrix tribe slowly gained support from all leaders in tribe group. Once that was done a rebellion occurred. In fact in the beginning the troops of Orleans were just told to leave. After they refused Artirix began a full scale military assault on the troops stationed. Few civilian Orleanes have quickly fled and now only the military remains fighting an increasingly difficult position war with the Sennons.

The peaceful Aragonians have withdrawn from Catalunya following a distemper in Aragon. Catalunyans following this ending to the war with Aragon have proposed a marriage between the daughter of Catalynia and King of Orleans.

Tartessian merchants have reached the shores of Italy and Mavretania making contact with Romans and Carthaginians respectively. Both nations seemed to be informed of Tartessos and its Eastern Merchant Empire.

Throughout the year military and merchant ships of Portugal and Tartessos engaged each other in combat sinking ships and running for cover if the enemy is outnumbered them. Manoeuvres and trade convoys have become a trade norm in this area with pirates also having their share of the pie. Both nations are in fact in a state of war and only a few words are needed for the conflict to spread on land.

King of Aragon has died of sickness in Catalynia while besieging one of the cities. After his death Aragonians have withdrawn to their country setting regency issues. This situation was used by both Castillians and the Basques who launched pillaging raids into Aragon in return for previous raids on their lands.

Italia
Rome is on the rise expanding in all directions and eliminating that stands in their way – men, cities, forests and mountains. A few roads between largest cities of Italy were constructed by garrison soldiers which both made Italy more accessible and made the soldiers even more discontent than if they were left to their garrison duties. The strategy that was meant to improve the “waiting” conditions of Roman soldiers made them a new swearing nickname “Mules of Marius” – according to the name of a general who introduced the “reform”. Currently around 15,000 Roman soldiers are very unhappy with their stay and their readiness for war has gone down.

Another military and political reform, a more successful this time, is now carried out throughout Italy, with the Roman government trying to involved more of their half-citizens and non-citizens (non Roman Italians) to participate in the Army. The project is expected to give the military great reserves if the political part of the deal is played out right.

Roman expedition has landed in Corsica with an aim to distort the Corsican trade and if it be possible to conquer the island. Clear Roman military organisation and discipline has played a vital role in a 4 months long campaign. Small skirmish battles have shown a small Corsican advantage that was later understood to be simple better knowledge of the terrain. In any case Corsicans have made a vital error of going for a major battle with the Romans that has taken place of a few open fields of Corsica. After two months of fighting Romans have not lost spirit and great terrain has played its role in this one major battle. Roman infantry has crushed the centre of Corsican army that later fled. Flanks were divided and later encircled and destroyed almost to the last man. After the battle Corsica declared total capitulation. Roman army occupied all of Corsica however the army is overwhelmed with their new tasks as Roman officers became local governors and now cannot perform two jobs well. Tension is building due to inefficiency among the Corsicans and the people who now “guard” them.

Little is known to the general public about the Etrurian war except the fact that no major battle has yet taken place as both Romans and Etrurians are engaged in skirmishes and small battles close to the border in Etrurian territory. A stronger effort will surely be delivered next year when both enormous armies have studied each other well and mounted enough soldiers for a grand assault.

Germania
Little is happening in Germany except the fact that more and better cities are being built of wood and some stone with a lot of effort in typical German specialities: breweries, farms and roads.

Africa
Africa is developing steadily with both Carthage and Egypt increasing trade around the Mediterranean. In Egypt a merger of two Kingdoms has taken place and Egypt seems to be on its way up to become a regional power.

Steppes
Scythians continue to sweep the southern Russian plains consuming villages, small towns and tribes. The mounted hordes have become the most feared enemy North of Euxine Sea and no tribe can stand up to them. A lot of the tribes are migrating North, West and South-East from Schythia fearing being conquered. The conquerors don’t seem to worry much about their new subject as long as they obey and pay taxes in order for the continued conquest. The nation is on the uplift, however it shows first signs of overstretching as human resources begin to deplete. Dacians having accepted some of the refugees are alarmed and are getting ready to mobilize. The same can be said about the tribes in Northern Caucasus.

Hellas
Slave trade flourishes with the Scythians in the North Sea. Expression “to buy a Scythian” has become an equivalent of “to buy a slave” as the Greeks make no difference between the Scythians and the people they conquer. This trade especially helped the economy of Athens, but it has created a whole social class of Scythian slaves in Hellas and beyond.
Sparta has become the single strongest military power when a few laws guaranteeing Spartan citizenship to non-Spartan children was passed. Number of Spartans has increased and the state has become more of a “state of spirit” then a “state of blood” of before. Consequences of this unbalancing situation are yet to be known.

In Asia Minor Trebizond has expanded into the East meeting Georgians that have recently united their country in opposition to the ever dominating Armenians in the region. The Temple works are proceeding as planned in the capital. Thankfully for the peasants and the already poor in the peninsula there are no wars as of current although pressure is building between Hittites and every other nation there.

Thrace has invaded Macedonia and after a long war has crushed it. The details are too long to list however the war had costed tens of thousands of men for both nations and impoverished local populations. The biggest military threat Thrace now faces comes from Spartan alliance.

Megale and Micra Bretannia
Druidism spreads through the Isles. It is unknown how, but the population seems to be very receptive of the idea. Of course this endangers the local Celtic Polytheistic religions which worries local priests. Some Druidic temples and communities have even appeared in Gallia and Iberia.

Eire expands its colonies into the Western part of the “Great Isles” meeting a very encouraging receipt where they land. However a new Kingdom called Londinium was united by a rule of a sword in the East that may be a threat in the future to all neighbouring states.

Eire itself has also grown richer and as a consequence of religious policies more educated. Religious figures are now offering their specialized and general education to the masses that are willing to learn from them. As a consequence links between the “church” and the people have increased and thus the influence of religion on every day life. Monetary reform proved to be a partial success as clay coins are much more vulnerable than metal ones (even Bronze) that could already be introduced. Nevertheless a centralisation of the monetary system is a society developed to these levels helped the economy.

Middle East
Despite a talk of royal marriage and cooperation between Persia and Medes things turned out quite differently. In a shift move the Persian Army crossed the border and proceeded to the capital constantly preventing the enemy from organising a counter offensive and gathering forces efficiently. Persians in this war showed themselves as very tough soldiers, disciplined, not demanding and professional. Many thanks go to their personal “education” and a prominent general Arnabaz who trained his part of the army well. General battle near the Medean capital Ecbatana lasted less than half a day with most of the Meden army dispersed or killed. Persians quickly occupied the country and ensured control over vital objects. Only 3 regions, two 2 in the West, and one in the East joined up with their neighbours not to be consumed by the Persians. The King of Medes and his family were captured by the Persians. Once factor that helped Persians in their war was an establishment of far-stretching road system mostly for military, but also civilian use.

Great Steppes
A great project was undertaken by the Turks in the middle of the Steppes. In this traditional nomad society more and more people begin to become farmers and crafters. The great Khan (or Tsar) of the Turks had ordered the most skilled and best educated people of his Khandom to come to the biggest city of his land – Samarquand – to build a Palace of Jahor Nazid to become the “beacon of civilization” At least that was the meaning of a 10 scrolls long document written by the Khan. Only a few thinking and educated people wondered how can Palace “bring marvel of cultural greatness”. IN any case the construction is underway.
Khans army crossed the border in order to “enrich their kingdom” and join new lands to what appears an Empire in the building. A clever manipulation of armies and attack waves allowed the Turks to lure the enemy army out of their homeland, defeat it (still with huge losses on both sides) and proceed to occupy Bactria ready for the taking. With the King of Bactria dead in a great battle, family captured and capital city plundered there seems to be no force to unite the Bactrians against the invaders. Only a few valleys are no controlled by the Turks.
Turkish attempt to expand the cities has failed mostly due to traditional nomad path followed by most of the population. However the areas of Turkish influence has increased enormously.

Far Far East
Japan continues to advance bringing civilization and culture to previously wild areas. Wise hand of the Emperor guides the expansion of Japan to the North and South settling even in the islands that are now called Okinawa. However a severe drought changed the stability of Japan. A local governor of a Northern province of Kuyshu mistreated the peasants causing many of them to die. Thus they rebelled being lead by a young man named Yagashima Isami. Initially as a rebellion “in protest” of this governor it has grown into a full scale separatist movement and the leader was proclaimed “War Emperor”. Japan now faces a rival nation occupying half-Kuyshu that they are constantly at war with.

Land of Rice and Salt
Zhou have expanded along the Huang He and to the West. Many “consumed” populations are enjoying a firm and authoritative rule of their new masters. The grudge against the Yi remains the driving force in their policies. If a war is planned then the man pool sufficient for it is achieved by Zhou. Furthermore Anyang have a problem with throne inheritance with four candidates competing for the title: two of the dead emperors sons, his brother and cousin. No war has so far followed but it seems that the Zhou and Yi will now change places for good. The Wu have expanded along the Chang Jiang and have build up a strong system of more efficient governance.

In the North a Yin kingdom seemed to have formed out of local tribes, however no contact is yet made with them by any of the 3 Kingdoms.

OOC: It would be great that some of you write more interesting orders than “increase economy”. If such orders are done (except for things where it is acceptable, like “recruits swordsmen with one eco) I may and will implement any economic reform I can think of and it may or may not work.

Best Orders: Israelite
Second Best Orders: Sicily – 1 line, lots of room for creativity ;).

Diplomacy is up to the players.

The time now is IT with every turn taking one year. Next BT is between 2 and 3 turns.

P.S. I will upload the stats and make small changes to the map tomorrow. Sorry for the delay there.

I LOVED THAT UPDATE!!!! I expected a little more expansion, but who the bloody heck cares? Gelion, you are officially my favorite Mod after Kamilian (for me, that'a HUGE complement).

Andis the attack was implemented, however the armies were (as it was said in the update) equally matched and thus no big scale war or occupation has taken place yet.
Small changes in the land controlled did take place as I said I will put them on the map later. Hope you understand :)

This update may be a bit tough on the players, but hey this is history. If there are more questions I am willing to answer why and how. I will make the necessary changes to the stats and map today at uni as I have no other time in the morning or evening.

Thanks Israelite :)

From: Orleans
To: Catalunya

We can accept your royal marriage proposal, BRING ON THE CAKE!

@gelion, so which side has more supporters?

From Catalunya to Orleans:
Let the alliance between our nations last for generations!

@Azale: Most of the population and small ranking officers support the "Commanders" group. The more wealthy people support "Generals" group. Obviously they are less numbered and in fact this is a class conflict.

It's still strange cus I ordered to engage in decisive battle...

One more thing gelion, is it normal that you describe people's secret projects in the update?

from one thing to another, when will the stats be done?

My appologies for the secret part. The stats will be posted within 2 hours.

No problemo, just make sure it doesn't happen again ;)

I may seem annoying nitpicker now, but I really appreciate that you continued this NES...

Lol I feel better now :) Yes I was not careful in reading your orders... really sorry about that. This time I hope I will do better.

Also tell me if you like the update style. Stories are also a great asset in a NES :p
