stJNES10: Expand and Conquer

In Queensland it is the QCS Test, which gets you an OP for entry into university.

In NY it's the Regents, about a half-dozen of which are required to graduate High School, and about 9 of which are needed to get a diploma good enough to put you in a good university. And that is, of course, not counting AP and CL exams, which are taken 3/4 of the way through the school year, and which decide if you get the college credit you've paid for.

And so this isn't complete spam:

Surrender now. Or else.

ahh, if only the "f-cat" had a purpose! it dosent really; not until recentlly, when it was made a requirment to pass for highschool; before ti was just soem sort of bearing on well schools were doing, which didnt work, as test scroes were horribly incosistent (and still are) from year to year; the state gave it too much importance, and forces the schools to take away from actual time when useful things coudl be taught to teachign things that will be on the F-cat test... horrible, however, I passed that bastard freshmen year, and have never had to look at it again; now on ly the SATs (dropped out of AP; a bit disenfranchised with the program you might say) and attendetn tests

I remember somthign named similer in middle school, but its been a dmaned 4 years, i cant quite remember it; i think the middle school tests were just a variation of the F-Cat tests though

Something about going back to schedule?

Illyria

As many a traveler knows, the nation of Illyria is.. odd... odd int he fact that it is a very militaristic nation; the fabric of the nation, the culture, and even its economy is centered on the well made fortresses that protect that many towns across the Illyrian country side, offering safe havens for storage of graneries, for production and manufacturing of goods, for trade, and for services that can only be gotten in a town.

This "urban culture & economy" is based upon two things;

1)the fairness of Illyrian governance
and
2)the might of the Illyrian army

with the first point, its rather simple; Illyria isnt a nation that happens to fancy brutality to its subjects, even if they arnt blood Illyrians; in fact, it is well known the the Etruscans, though they can be considered cousins to the Illyrians anyway, are a people whom despite thier connections are not bllod Illyrians, and yet proudlly uphold the banner of the nation, as citizens, soldires, merchants, and buricrats; thier are even soem Etruscans sitting on the royal council that advises the king!

the second, by nature of course, is a bit more blunt, a bit more violent, and yet filled with complex subtelties befit fo such a grand topic- war runs deep in the Illyrian veins, and is said that thier was a lack of proximate barbarian tribes to the most ancint beginnigns of Illyria because in the time before history, the Illyrians had drivin them all away in a series of eath shakign and bloody tribal conflicts; though, if it is true, it seems those old wounds have heald, for know one seems to know enough about any such things other then whispering legends.

However, th emilitary legacy of the Illyrians can hardley be denied; for from the earlyiest days of the grand kingdom, the Illyrians have turned a prudent eye towards the most clear arm of thier immediate power, and nutured it,as well as the martial spirit present in the Illyrian people, and in current days, instiling that same spirit to our Etruscan brethren.

for now, the mainstay of the Illyrian army rests, on two tirs, spearmen, and archers; bot are proficient at what they do, well trianed, and well drilled, and have a history of being the first troops to utilize well drilled formations in combat.

Spearmen
soldier22om.png

The spearmen are, as states above, one fo the two parts of the Illyrian army; well equipped with bronze greaves, armlets, sheild, and a very distinctive helmet, he has little to worry about from an enemy attack! Armement wise, he is a departure from mos tother natiosn spearmen; he carries three spear, instea do just one, and they are of two different types; one is a "formation spear" -that is to say, it is a spear to form ranks, to join in the more complex battle formations (OOC; dont expect no reguler phalanx from me!) this spear is long, and strong, and aside form forming ranks, it is VERY usefuly for utterlly destorying any and all cavalry, and other forms of horse that dare come in its path.

however, that is only the first type of spear, the second type is a smaller, more close up and personal weapon- it is a thrusting, and gutting spear (think Zulu ;)), and is meant for after an intial shock has worn off OR if, soemhow, the enemy breaks the formation, and long spears are no longer useful; this close weapon means that an Illyrian spearmen can stil get down to buisness, even if an enemy comes in too close for the long spear (and if all else fails, he could use a long dagger)

it is in this way, of a well armed warrior, fit for many roles that id why the Illyrian spearmen have come so far; and indeed, it why they are famed at home, and abroad; many a youth, as strange as it may seem, looks forward to commanding a unit of Illyrian troops, leadeing the charge of a rank of mighty Illyrian spears!

Archers
soldier36un.png

Of course, the Spearmen are half of the great Illyian army; the othe rintegral part is the archers; guaridng the SPearmens, asses, quite litterally for th emos tpart, these troops are invalubelk at takign out enemy skirmishers, particulery any horse skirmishers the enemy might employ; well skilled, and well drilled, they have a unique practice amoungst archers- aiming- the art of Illyrian archery has its beginnings, as dose much of the practice of bowry accross all lands, in the hunt; but many lands have forskane the time honoured drill of aiming, though Illyria hasnt; seeting up targets, thier are very often archery compitions, and fairs accross Illyrian lands, were such Yeomen can show off thier skills, and, if of proper skill, talent, and moral standing, they may get to become well payed instructors, or feild officers.

of course, aimign isnt everything; somtimes a situation calls for just massive quantities of arrows poured intot he air, and agian, the Illyrian art fo makign its men versitile warriors- quality over quantity-, to coin a phrase in these ages, is superb, and an Illyrian bowmen will have no trouble at all shooting at least 7-12 arrows a minute, even more if he is off better fitness then military trianing requires him to be.

while not as prestigoius as beign a spearmen, bowmen have thier role, and indeed, many men enjoy becomign bowmen, because fo thier own skills at hunting, an art and skill admired in many Illyrian communties, and a popular sport to engage in, for comon man, nobility, and soldire alike.

The future?
while thier are two main components of the Illyrian army, it harldey means things will stay that way; as we speak, a grand palace in our capital, Salonae, is beign built; a mighty palace to inspire our people, it is also inspirng a new style of soldire, a Royal Guard

the story behind the small creation of the existing troops, and thier gorwing popularity is simple; in the days of the war for Italy, when our etruscan brothers were new to our nation, and we rallied to eachothers call to drive out the Sikels whom were occupyeing Italy, and oppressing the Etruscnas, forcing them into harse labour in argicultural camps at the time, a great host of Illyrians was dispatched to augument the native forces of Etruscans who rallied under the Illyrian banner to drive out the Sikels; even th eking sent his contingent of Spearmen, earmarked, and specially equipped for thier royal duty to that front; he kept with him however, the drill master of this elite company, with a very interesting purpose in mind...

The building othe palace, while it is constructed of stone, required a great deal of wooden framework; once this frame work was in place, the wood cutters had little to do until the next stage, the interior construction of the palce, was begun, and it was with this in mind that the king, and head drill master wnet out, and inspected the entire host of woodcutters, men from as far afield as even Rome, the great new fortrees in Italy at the time, or from as close as hoem as just down the next Salonaean street corner. pickihn out the strongest, the patriotic, the best of morality, and the brightest of these wood cutters, the head drill master sat to work; he had parts of what was needed for a spearmens uniform; the body armour, and the greaves, but other wise lacked many a utensile; lookign at the funds, the King decided he woudl not warrent squandering funds from the remaining stock pile, lest an emergency come about and those funds be needed urgentlly; so, it was the King took from his own pocket that woudl fund his new, if little, cadre fo royal guards; it was enough to commision new helmets, of a design not seen yet, and the woodsmen set about creating thier own wooden basis for sheilds, which were then bound with a layer of lether, a layer of rawhide, and fixed with brazen rim; however, they wished not to become spearmen; they wished to remain distinctive from they troops they were replacing, and already well skilled with what could easilyl becoem a tool of war anyway... they became a cadre of Axemen; using stout and sturdy heavy long handels war axes, they were soon drilled well beyond what even the former guardsmen of the king had been drilled, too, trianed ot a pinnacle of performence; and soon became very noted, not tjust in Salonae, but in all the towns the King traveld too, makign his surveys of the land, keepign in touch with the people; eventually, at thi spoint, the "Palace Guard" is still a small, personal guard, but a generation of young men is gorwing up lookign at what the future may old, a distictive style of Illyrian trooper, more disticntive then the already disticntive spearmen and archers- a mighty soldire who can be called a soldire of Illyria- and perhaps more importnatlly, a soldire that Illyrians and Etruscans alike can set about becoming.

I'll have to give it a try once I win a heroically pitched land battle :) (well, or sea battle, but I dotn knwo how well I can draw ships and what not, as I;ve never tried it)

Xen, I am really beginning to think you make those typos on purpose. No way would anyone type "soldier" as "soldire" on EVERY instance by accident. ;)

Jason, update?
