New UU: Egyptian Assasin
The Egyptians of Cyprus had always been known for their sneakiness. The reason was the relative low population of the colony, smaller then both the Phoenician and the Mycenaean. Therefore they tried to turn the tide of the battle over Cyprus by using unfair tactics like ambushing, bribing, misinforming, incitementing or assassinating. Supported by their richness from their extensive chopper trading, they become masters on this level. Without these special abilities they certainly wouldnt have survived the two great wars of Cyprus. Especially in one specific battle they proofed the effectiveness of their tactics.
Battle of Paphos
Battle of Paphos
During the First Great War of Cyprus, where Mycenae, Phoenicia and Egypt battled over the control of the island, there were countless important battles. Often two parties allied to push back the currently strongest side. One of these battles is known in history as the Battle of Paphos. It was after a Phoenician offensive against Mycenae had almost gained complete control over their part of the island, when only the core cities of the Mycenaens remained under their control, that the Egyptians signed a pact with them to throw back the Phoenicians. The Egyptian attack surprised the Phoenicians, although they had made preparations, and the tide was rapidly turning. The former invaders had to withdraw from most of their conquered territory and defend their homelands.
After one year of war the Phoenicians had lost one-half of their original territory. The wonderful city of Paphos stood as a gate to their important north-eastern cities. If the city fell, the entire Phoenician colony would most likely fall, too, one city after the other. As the combined Mycenaean-Egyptian army approached the walls of the city, the citizen prepared for a long siege.
After six months of siege the supplies of the enclosed city began to deplete and the moral of the citizen and the defending army was close to collapse. Around the entire city the attackers had set up their camps. They were well supplied by the Phoenician countryside and since they only had to wait to accept the surrender of Paphos, their morale was pretty high, too. The rest of the Phoenician did not even attempt to send help. They fortified their cities and build big walls and towers, while their armies patrolled their borders. The fate of the city seemed sealed.
But then suddenly an unexpected event surprised the Mycenaens. The Egyptian general Kosey, a noble whose family had a long military tradition, had had secret meeting with the Phoenicians and they had signed a deal. In the morning of a warm summer day assassin sneaked into the tents of the Mycenaean commanders and murdered them. When the Mycenaens realised that they were without leadership they left their position and run towards the mountains. When the besieged Phoenicians saw the whole army flee, they opened the gates of the city, which had stayed close for six months, and charged them. Only few were slain by them, since the exhausted Phoenicians were too slow, but the Egyptian chariots which had followed them killed many of their former allies.
But the Egyptian-Phoenician alliance didnt last long. Meanwhile the rest of the Egyptian army had entered Paphos and they had slain the King of the city and many of his men. When the Phoenicians turned around and saw their city in flames they fell on the ground and cried, asking their gods what they did to enrage him. Only few were still able to resist since both their hearts and their bodies had been broken. Those who still tried to were crushed by the Egyptian chariots. The rest was sold as slaves. Few of them would ever see Cyprus or Phoenicia again
However the Egyptian betrayal had formed an alliance between Mycenae and their former enemies of Phoenicia. The Egyptian advance didnt last very long when both of them got reinforcement from their homelands. But still big parts of their lands were burned by the Egyptian hordes.
***
Today the Egyptian Cypriots are still masters of assassinating and betraying. Although the Egyptian assassins only form a small part of the army they are still feared by their enemies. Any commander fighting them will sleep with at least one eye open.
OOC: Jason as you can see I changed the name of my UU abit. Thanks for updating my template but could you please change my government, too? You forgot it. Its Oligarchy (here: some kind of federation of the the numerous small kingdoms of Cyprus.) I dont realy if it is the right name.
