*secret* invade Sparta Tactics BELOW
Athenian Battle Tactics.
These are the Athenian Battle Tactics, the yellow are the starting positions. The Athenian army will advance like this onto the enemy, the archers will then rain arrows down on the poor Spartan archers (primary target) with the Clubmen after(secondary target), after taking a beating, the clubmen will try and attack the archers, the archers will then run behind the block of melee infantry and rain arrows down on the advancing men. If the spearmen are about to get flanked then one of the group of clubmen will move in to cover its flank.
This tactic SHOULD always work as there isnt any cavalry so the archers cannot be rushed or the spearmen flanked. The tactic also uses the spearmen as a defensive unit with the archers forcing the enemy to come to us rather than us to them. In the event of the Spartans getting mass archers (yeah right, Spartans despised archery)we will retreat then 100 Archers and 100 clubmen will act as the rearguard.
Should the army be ambushed whilst we are marching etc. then the Athenian army will make a quick run into this formation.
self explanatory melee protect the archers from ambushers ok,
MY MEN MARCHING TO WAR!
These men are the glorious soldiers of Athens, preparing to march to war
By the way, the armour is bronze
One thing I havent accounted for whilst using the tactics that the Spartan army will get Chariots or horse and try and attack me.
On the event of a flanking move by the Spartans then the Athenians will react like so.
And if you arent a good arrow movement reader, then the finished map should look like this.
The Archers will always fire towards the clubmen, as they will be more effective firing into the masses. The Clubmen will move from the flanks and protect the spearmen flanks whilst the spearmen will turn to face the new threat, a chariot charge
If the chariots split up and try and take my spearmen from many directions, the spearmen will turn and face outwards in 66 columns, 3 ranks deep. The front row kneeling down spears pointing out, second row, crouching with the spear butt in the ground, with the spear pointing upwards to where the horses neck will be, and finally, the 3rd rank where the men will stand with their spears ready to be raised at just above horse head level. This formation will be presented in a half semicircle.
For the spearmen to be able to turn quicker they will raise there spears until the spear is straight up in the air face the direction they are meant to be facing and then lay down there spears.
This is what the formation should look like whilst it is preparing to fight, although it should be wider and have less me at the back. The spears are raised so that projectiles will be stopped and slowed.
These are the type of equipment the spearmen will use, the clubmen the same a club instead of a 9 ft spear. The archers will not wear any armour and will have a bow and arrows.
Aspis (shield): Inaccurately referred to as a Hoplon.
Cuirass: linen linothorax or bronze/brass muscled cuirass.
Kranoi: Helmet which is compulsory and will come complete with horsehair crest.
Chiton: A type of tunic to be worn under armour and fought in,
Sandals: Wooden
Sword: Xliphos or Kopis style sword (must be historically accurate). Bronze of course
Dory: All Hoplites must carry a spear of 7'3" to 9' in length with a small leaf-bladed spearhead, and a bronze Souroter (butt spike) of about 38cm in length.
Felt or wool pilos: Type of hat to be worn under your helmet (to prevent it wearing a hole in your head).
Himation: Compulsory cloak, dark red in colour.
Another clever thing the Spartans might do is raid us whilst we sleep I would do a picture but due to this post already having so many pictures I may as well not do one. Basically the camp will have the clubmen on the outermost camp edge, with the archers on the next layer in and the spearmen on the innermost layer. As the attack takes place the spearmen will group and form the proper formations (shown in picture miles above somewhere In the post) The archers will just support the clubmen, the clubmen will just get up and fight, the clubmen will also perform the camp patrols on a rotar.
Finally, I would like to show the armies glorious generals, this is them conferring about the above mentioned Athenian Battle tactics.
The short guy on the right is the Clubmen colonel; the guy at the back is the archer and spearman colonel whilst the guy on the right is the overall general, together they make up the command of the Athenian army. (or The justice league whichever suits)
BTW! if ANY men are found lurking in the woods to the east then the woods will be set alight same goes for the long grass to the west, but jason will always have the stone quarry to the north.
