Celtic Orders

Increase clubman by 1 economy
Increase spearmen by 1 economy
Begin Wonder-Celtic Renewal: +3 economy
Have 200 Clubman in Spain continue to expand
Have my 5 galleys transport 200 clubman and 100 spearmen to the colony in Africa to expand it

Alas, I still have no time for a story, or much else besides quick orders on the NES forums. Sorry. :(

Orders:

Build a unit of spears
Move them to the border with the Aryans
Put almost all of my military on the Aryan border, all of it except for 100 clubs and 50 archers, which are to be split evenly to expand east and west.
If they attack, put the spears in the center, the archers behind, and the clubbies on the flanks. The spears will hold the center while archers shoot arrows over their heads and into the enemy, and the clubmen will charge and strike the enemy flanks.

**** that **** man. I am pissed at how this was done. I better have a good explanation or I will be leaving out of protest to this unfairness.

To be quite honest I would not be pissed off if Plexus had joined at the beggining but the fact that its into the nes now and he has chosen the most densely packed area on the map and futhermore he does not take any of the numerous NPCs that were in that general area is deplorable. I PROTEST THIS SITUATION WITH ALL MY STRENGTH.

Fire spread through Asia.

The old priest stood in a circle of stones, that were left by the ancient ones.

"Baali otar neka..." - he whispered in val'ez - "Lord's revenge is coming..."

---

Lightning clashed against the hard ground. The two sides have stopped fighting. Wars of Asia have begun here, with the Canaanite invasion of the Hatti, the homeland of Hittites. Though many Canaanites were of Hittite ancestry themselves, they were even more determined to fight. The local Hittites were regarded as traitors, who fled as soon as the tides of war turned against them.

Fighting has stopped amongst the armies, but Mursilis' chariot still rushed towards his Canaanite opponent. Hasilis stood on the ground. In his hand was a sword. Mursilis jumped out of his chariot and raised the Sword of Hittites.

He charged Hasilis. Both of their swords were made by the Ancients, and their Gods have gifted these swords to the kings and dynasties.

Kara Baali and the Sword of Hittites were both huge, strong, made from an unknown metal and decorated. Both had golden hilts, and on the blade of the first there was a picture of Baal with a sword in his hands. The Hittite sword had inscriptions in the language of the Hatti.

The swords clashed. Again. And again. And again. And neither broke.

The two armies watched the battle in awe. They were silent. It was as if it were not kings fighting here, but Gods themselves.

A lightning struck. Sword of Hittites hit Kara Baali again. Hasilis hit back.

Mursilis collapsed to the ground. The king of Hittites was dead.

But it was unimportant.

The fighting resumed. The Canaanite chariots charged into Hittite rank, and their crews were killing Hittite crewmen in other chariots that raced towards them from the other side. Clubmen bludgeoned eachother to death, and deadly rains of arrows hit both sides. Hittites fought to protect the body of their king, and Hasilis' sword cut many of them.

The Sword of Hittites disappeared. It was never found again.

Your old king is dead and your sword is lost. You are completely outnumbered. Surrender now, give us a portion of your southern territory and Assyrians a portion of your eastern territory, and pay tribute of one economy level every four turns. Otherwise, Hattusha will burn in flames.

Orders:
- Continue wonder (2/6).
- 50 clubmen and 50 archers are to remain home and guard it.
- Start hiring tax collectors, to collect taxes in gold, livestock or recruits from the nobles and lesser kings and queens of Canaan. The tax collectors will be... helped out by 50 clubmen.
- 350 clubmen, 700 archers, 37 Hyksos chariots, 100 spearmen are to press on our attack against the Hittites. Hasilis will still lead the army. Our clubmen will march first, to draw out enemy chariots. Archers will then fire at the chariots, and then our Hyksos chariots will attack the enemy flank (prefferibly from cover, if we could find something like that), making the enemy chariots an easy prey. Then the clubmen will charge the enemy chariots and troops, under the cover of our archer fire, and the spearmen will advance and defend our archers in case of an ambush or an attack.

For centuries the Hanseatic people had expanded thier horizons. First, defeating the Celts who resisted the Hanseatic Leagues creation. Then, to far away lands of Swedes and Danes they went. Arduous sea journeys to far away islands, and loong treks to the South German plains. And now, with the sudden discovery of advanced peoples like the Takir and Austrians, the Hanseatians have a whole new door for discovery kicked open.

Speaking of advanced peoples, another kind of people where discovered as well. Deep tundra dwellers, they live for war and bloodshed. Its ingrained into thier society. The newest challenge for the Hanseatians, is to somehow avoid conflict with them. The last thing they want is a fight to the death for a few mountains and a river......

Massilia had risen above its petty roots and grown to be a power to be reckoned with in the western Mediterranean. The long, fertile coastline stretched far in all directions, and the Queen's Navy sailed back and forth between the colony on Corsica and the mainland. Times were good, trade was good, and the construction of the Oracle continued as planned. Though labor on the Oracle would take long indeed, when it is finally completed, all nations will see the greatness of Massilia.

A Complete History Of Austria
By Franz Erstweiler

The Formation Of The Austrian Empire
Austria began life as a few small tribes and independent states. Yet as Europe began to form into new nations and Empires it became increasingly obvious to the Austrian people that in order to survive in this new world of civilisation they would need to unite. Despite many attempts none of the tribe cheifs could agree upon a deal which would unite their states, none of them wanted to relinquish their power.
Many small wars were fought amongst the many states but none were successful and all ended in bloody stalemate. Although a break-through was to come in the form of Prince Leopold of Vienna. The young Prince had kept his armies neutral in the conflicts amongst the states and had slowly built up a group of powerful alliances through careful political movement. Then in one fell swoop he was able to use his political and military power to defeat his largest rivals, the Serbs and the Slavs. With these two powerful states defeated the rest soon pledged allegiance to Prince Leopold and he was formally crowned Emperor Of Austria in Vienna.
It had been a masterstroke of political genious and military tactics which had brought the crown to Leopold and united Austria.
Yet despite his victory Leopold still suffered problems, the Serb and Slavic peoples felt that they were the rightful leaders of Austria but they were powerless to prevent Leopold take the throne and therefore had to acept his rule for the time being.

Expansion And The Consolidation Of Power
Leopold seeked to create a strong Austria, one which even after his death would continue to grow and defend itself. His Empire had grown immensely since his coronation and now stretched from the borders of New Takir out to the swamp lands of Russia. Leopold knew that an important aspect of retaining his crown would be a strong army and a well run Government. He knew that he would require good tacticians and advisors if he was to be able to achieve his goals.
One of Leopold's key advisors was his brother Artemis. Artemis was a military genius and a great warrior. They formed a formidable team, Leopold strengths were in his political abilities, his powers of persuasion and his brother provided the muscle. Artemis had his own elite unit which was famed for it's ferocity in battle and their complete devotion to their leader. It was with this unit that Leopold had consolidated his power and brought Austria under his complete control. By the year 1764bc Leopold was the unquestioned Emperor of Austria.

*secret* invade Sparta Tactics BELOW

Athenian Battle Tactics.

athentactics.png

These are the Athenian Battle Tactics, the yellow are the starting positions. The Athenian army will advance like this onto the enemy, the archers will then rain arrows down on the poor Spartan archers (primary target) with the Clubmen after(secondary target), after taking a beating, the clubmen will try and attack the archers, the archers will then run behind the block of melee infantry and rain arrows down on the advancing men. If the spearmen are about to get flanked then one of the group of clubmen will move in to cover its flank.

This tactic SHOULD always work as there isn’t any cavalry so the archers cannot be rushed or the spearmen flanked. The tactic also uses the spearmen as a defensive unit with the archers forcing the enemy to come to us rather than us to them. In the event of the Spartans getting mass archers (yeah right, Spartans despised archery)we will retreat then 100 Archers and 100 clubmen will act as the rearguard.

Should the army be ambushed whilst we are marching etc. then the Athenian army will make a quick run into this formation.

marching_coloumn.png

self explanatory melee protect the archers from ambushers ok,

MY MEN MARCHING TO WAR!

men.jpg

These men are the glorious soldiers of Athens, preparing to march to war …
By the way, the armour is bronze :)

One thing I haven’t accounted for whilst using the tactics that the Spartan army will get Chariots or horse and try and attack me.

On the event of a flanking move by the Spartans then the Athenians will react like so.

chariot.png

And if you aren’t a good arrow movement reader, then the finished map should look like this.

antichariottactics.png

The Archers will always fire towards the clubmen, as they will be more effective firing into the masses. The Clubmen will move from the flanks and protect the spearmen flanks whilst the spearmen will turn to face the new threat, a chariot charge
If the chariots split up and try and take my spearmen from many directions, the spearmen will turn and face outwards in 66 columns, 3 ranks deep. The front row kneeling down spears pointing out, second row, crouching with the spear butt in the ground, with the spear pointing upwards to where the horses neck will be, and finally, the 3rd rank where the men will stand with their spears ready to be raised at just above horse head level. This formation will be presented in a half semicircle.

For the spearmen to be able to turn quicker they will raise there spears until the spear is straight up in the air face the direction they are meant to be facing and then lay down there spears.

256_men2.jpg

This is what the formation should look like whilst it is preparing to fight, although it should be wider and have less me at the back. The spears are raised so that projectiles will be stopped and slowed.

These are the type of equipment the spearmen will use, the clubmen the same a club instead of a 9 ft spear. The archers will not wear any armour and will have a bow and arrows.

Aspis (shield): Inaccurately referred to as a Hoplon.

Cuirass: linen linothorax or bronze/brass muscled cuirass.

Kranoi: Helmet which is compulsory and will come complete with horsehair crest.

Chiton: A type of tunic to be worn under armour and fought in,

Sandals: Wooden :D

Sword: Xliphos or Kopis style sword (must be historically accurate). Bronze of course

Dory: All Hoplites must carry a spear of 7'3" to 9' in length with a small leaf-bladed spearhead, and a bronze Souroter (butt spike) of about 38cm in length.

Felt or wool pilos: Type of hat to be worn under your helmet (to prevent it wearing a hole in your head).

Himation: Compulsory cloak, dark red in colour.

Another clever thing the Spartans might do is raid us whilst we sleep I would do a picture but due to this post already having so many pictures I may as well not do one. Basically the camp will have the clubmen on the outermost camp edge, with the archers on the next layer in and the spearmen on the innermost layer. As the attack takes place the spearmen will group and form the proper formations (shown in picture miles above somewhere In the post) The archers will just support the clubmen, the clubmen will just get up and fight, the clubmen will also perform the camp patrols on a rotar.

Finally, I would like to show the armies glorious generals, this is them conferring about the above mentioned Athenian Battle tactics.

generals.jpg

The short guy on the right is the Clubmen colonel; the guy at the back is the archer and spearman colonel whilst the guy on the right is the overall general, together they make up the command of the Athenian army. (or “The justice league” whichever suits)

BTW! if ANY men are found lurking in the woods to the east then the woods will be set alight same goes for the long grass to the west, but jason will always have the stone quarry to the north.

Roman Orders and Story will come later. However I wish for some resolution to the fact of Plexus's civ.

IL REGNO DI SALENTO

Salento, a seafaring kingdom of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Its strategic position along the Straight of Otranto allows it to control a large degree of trade to and from the Adriatic via the Coastal towns of Brindisi, Otranto and Corsano.

Engaged in a period of warfare with rival kingdoms Basilicata, Brindisi, Crotone and Taranto, Salento's growth was stunted by the ambitions of power, land and gold from these small despotisms. But in 1855 BCE, the Kingdom of Roma to the North, on her way to conquering the remainder the Italian Peninsula, invaded Basilicata; within three years, Rome had conquered her, the strongest of the five Southern Kingdoms. Seizing an opportunity, the now premiere nation of Southern Italy, Salento, turned to the neighboring, weaker Kingdoms. The newly crowned King Marius II's armies captured Taranto in 1851 BCE and Brindisi just three years later, absorbing her armies and lucrative trade contracts with the Mediterranean. Crotone was annexed into the Roman Kingdom years later in 1843 BCE, thus making Salento the only remaining Southern Kingdom and even rivaling the power of Roma.

Update 4: 1700bce

Events:

The Picts invade Angle-Saxonia! In an outright aggressive attack, Pict clubmen and archers invade first, meeting the Angle-Saxonian defenses nearly half way into Angle-Saxonian land. The battle looked like it was going to be in favor of the Angle-Saxonians until something seemed to be stirring up a storm in the distance. Soon 200 chariots descended down upon the Angle-Saxonians, slaughtering the remaining defenders in this battle. They were forced to retreat, and now the Picts are upon the gates of London.

Novgorodians are able to expand greatly using a method of trade-then-conquer. This tactic includes trading with the people they are going to invade, introducing them to the Novgorod culture and wealth. Then, when least expecting it, the invasion force sweeps through the village and annexes it into the Novgorod Empire. However, now that the empire has grown so large, it is very hard to keep certain parts under control, as the army is spread very thin. Civil wars and revolutions break out nearly every month. Also, the first contact with another nation has occurred, as Novgorod fur traders make it to the Hanseatic League.

A Gaulish expedition takes to the sea in exploration of what Celtic traders say is a great land to the south. However, what the Gaulish did not know was the dangerous journey, in rough sea, to get to this land from Gaul. The galleys that were dispatched, and all of its crew, were never heard from again.

A Roman expedition has landed on the other coast of the Adriatic, opposite to that or Roma, and on the small island of Malta. This has angered Carthaginian settlers who were on their way to Malta, and who were promised the island.

The Celts, stubborn with not loosing their African colony, greatly reinforce its ranks there only to find another defeat in the battle for Longshore. However, they were able to find a weakness in their western flank, and exploited it, gaining small bits of land from a weak tribal union. However, attacks continue from all sides, wearing down the moral and men of the Celtic army here.

The first tax collectors in the world are hired by the King of Canaan, who sends them, with escorts, to collect taxes of gold, livestock, or new recruits to the army from the nobles and princes of the outlying provinces. This is proven highly successful, and though many poor people protest it, these are problems of the nobles of whom the peasants work for, not the King. Many nobles have built their own armies for suppressing these riots.

The Hittites fight on against the Assyrians and Canaanites, inflicting astounding casualties upon the enemies. Hittite generals easily adapt to the tactics used by the Canaanites by charging with chariots against the running Canaanite clubmen, slaughtering them in the thousands, and because they are chariots it is hard for the archers to provide reliable cover. Most of the Canaanite clubmen that are sent to war are killed, but this may be a good thing, allowing the Canaanites to upgrade their army with the new iron ore imported from Egypt.

The Spartans are faced once again with war as the Athenians mobilize and invade northern Sparta. The city of Corinth was taken almost without a fight as the Spartans try and muster their fighting force. The Athenians then continued on south to reach the city of Sparta itself. Here, upon the fields before Sparta, does the battle of all time take place. Armies of nearly equal value face off, but Sparta has the upper hand by fighting on their own soil, and by the years of military training each soldier of Sparta goes through. However, general Pegasus leads the Athenians to victory through brilliant tactics and the Spartans retreat to within their city walls.

The Minoans regain the rest of Crete as the Cypriots evacuate. What they didn’t know is that they were heading towards the Anatolian colony, which falls quickly as the Minoans left nothing there to defend.

Rome is invaded from the north by a large Taikir army in a blatant surprise and aggressive attack. Using the small rivers and valleys on the south side of the Alps, the Takirians are able to advance far before being stopped by the Romans. So far there are hardly any losses.

The Bulgars also get a surprise when Macedonians invade their soil. So far there is no confrontation between the two nations, and the locals are not mad about the invasion.

The Mekong fights back against the Siamese, creating a standstill between the two nations.
